Bring Him

Sabine paced her minuscule room onboard Ahsoka's ship, Lothcat. The room felt even less familiar than it did on the trip to see the rest of the rebels. Everything felt wrong. Yes, they were looking for Ezra, but it didn't feel complete. And it never would. Not without Kanan.

Sabine could remember the first time she'd met Ezra. He'd been nothing but a troublemaker then, trying to steal their disruptors and sneaking around the ship. He'd even snuck inside the ship and crawled through the vents to get wherever he wanted to. Sabine could hear the faint metal thuds of him moving around above her head . . .

She stopped pacing, straining her ears. The dull thuds weren't in her head. They were directly above her.

She slipped out of her room and hurried down the short hallway to the cockpit. Kallus and Ahsoka were in there, staring at the ceiling as they listened intently.

"You hear it too?" Sabine whispered. Kallus nodded as Ahsoka held up a finger for silence. She narrowed her eyes and held a hand palm-outwards towards a vent opening.

The cover launched open with a clang, sending a small form tumbling to the ground in a heap of green and brown.

"Jacen?" Sabine cried. "What are you doing here?"

"And why do I get the feeling your mother doesn't know about it?" Kallus added with a stern look. Jacen shrugged. He stood and brushed himself off.

"She probably knows by now," he admitted.

The cockpit door slid open and Zeb charged inside, borifle held ready. "What's going on? I heard banging!"

"We have a stowaway," Sabine explained. Jacen waved.

"And we'll be sending him home straight away," Kallus added. Panic overtook Jacen's previous expression.

"No! You can't send me back! I want to go with you guys to find Ezra!"

"And your mom wants you to stay home safe and sound," Sabine replied. "Even I have to listen to my mom."

"But she'll be so mad that I snuck away! She never lets me do anything?"

"Never lets you do anything?" Kallus laughed. "Kid, you're the best pilot in the whole galaxy!"

"But I don't want to be a pilot!" Jacen protested. He turned his plea to Ahsoka, who hadn't spoken a word yet. "I want to be a Jedi, like my dad."

The rebels fell silent. Zeb and Sabine exchanged glances. Jacen wanted to be a Jedi like his dad? Did he even know what happened to Kanan because he was a Jedi?

"Please?" Jacen begged. "I know you're a Jedi, Ahsoka. Please just teach me a little bit!"

She watched him, entirely devoid of emotion. Finally, her eyes flickered sideways to Sabine. Sabine shrugged.

"If you're going to be my padawan, there are specific rules you have to follow," Ahsoka announced. Jacen grinned broadly and punched the air.

"Yes! I'm so gonna be a Jedi!"

"You're going to train him?" Kallus asked, watching skeptically as Jacen paraded his victory dance. "Is now the best time?"

"There's never a best time," Ahsoka responded. "I started training with my master in the middle of a battle. Which reminds me." She turned to face Jacen once again. "The rules."

"Anything!" Jacen pledged.

"You'll address me as Master Tano while I train you. You'll do all the exercises I tell you to, no matter how pointless they seem. You will obey my every order, even if you don't agree or I tell you to go home immediately. Do you understand?"

"Of course, Ahsoka!" After a pointed glance Jacen hastily amended his sentence. "I mean, of course, Master Tano!"

"That's better. Now, go clean the storage bay."

"What? But . . ." Jacen sighed. "Yes, Master Tano."

He turned and brushed past Zeb, off to his new destination. Ahsoka grinned at Sabine.

"My old master used to pull that trick on me," she confided. "Who knew it could be so fun!"
