Cason
I laid on my bed and thought about everything that happened this past week. I knew Brooke was lying about nothing being wrong and it'd been bugging me for days. She hadn't even eaten anything since we left the hospital! I even offered to feed her and she just chuckled, waving me off.
I heard a ping sound and realized it was my phone. It was Dylan; he'd sent me a text.
Dylan- it okay if I come over? I've wanted to check up on you guys and see if you were okay. I would've asked sooner but... I wasn't sure if I should. I know you're not a reckless driver so if you want to talk about it, I'm game. Just... let me know you guys are okay, all right? You scared me half to death!
I had a full blown smile on my face by the time I finished reading his text. I shook my head, chuckling softly to myself. No matter what happens, I know Dylan will stay by my side and be my best friend. I sent him a quick text back.
Me- How's tomorrow? I'm taking Brooke to the art museum I told you about so she can get her award from the famous art lady. After, I'm throwing a party for Brooke and we're going job hunting.
A few seconds later, I got another text from Dylan- Oh dude I'm so glad you texted back! I was worried sick! :( Of course I'll come to support Brooke! I thought you already had a job though...
I texted him back, explaining myself better- I meant job hunting for Brooke. It's great that you'll come! It's at five o'clock tomorrow at the art museum. The party will be right after I guess.
A second later, my phone pinged again. Dylan- All right, I'll be there.
I put my phone down on my bed and sighed. I had to try and get Brooke to eat something. I put on some sweatpants and walked out of my room to Brooke's.
I slowly opened the door and stepped into the room. Brooke was curled up into a ball, snoring softly. I smiled. She was so cute when she's asleep. I walked over to her bed and poked her side. She didn't stir, just grunted in her sleep. I poked her again, this time on her stomach. She didn't open her eyes, but her hand shot out and grabbed mine, pushing it away.
I stifled a chuckle and bent down to her level. I leaned over to her ear and whispered, "Brooke, wake up."
Her eyes shot open and she shot up from her spot, staring at me, with a bewildered expression.
I let out a small chuckle and said, "Good, you're awake."
She just looked at me, something glinting in her eyes. I shook my head. I probably imagined it. The covers had fallen off her body when she sat up, so I got a good look at her body. She was wearing a Looney Tunes pajama shirt with Tweety Bird and Sylvester the cat on it. Her pants had the roadrunner and Wile. E Coyote on it.
I smiled and whispered, "Come on, we're going to eat dinner."
She shook her head slowly, as if breaking from a trance. She shook her head again. She cleared her throat and frowned. "No, Cason, I'm not hungry."
My eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Why wouldn't she eat? I crossed my arms and said, "Brooke, you have to eat something! Please?" I gave her my best puppy dog eyes, hoping for her sake that they'd work. They worked.
She sighed and stood up from the bed and stretched the best she could with her left arm still in its cast. I looked at her face, just now noticing the tear streaks in her cheeks. My eyes widened.
"Brooke!" I exclaimed.
She jumped and turned to look at me. "What?"
I uncrossed my arms and walked closer to her. I walked until I was right in front of her. I brought up a hand to her cheek and sighed. "Why were you crying?"
She turned her head away and sighed. "I'm not telling you," she muttered. "I'm hungry now."
With that, she walked out of the room and down the steps.
I punched the wall lightly and cursed. Why couldn't she just open up to me? Why couldn't she tell me? I shook my head and walked down the stairs. Brooke was sitting on a stool in the kitchen, slowly spinning herself around. I scratched the back of my neck and opened the fridge. I turned to face Brooke and asked, "What do you want to eat?"
She jumped in her seat and swiveled the stool in my direction. Her face softened in relief when she realized that it was just me. My eyebrows scrunched up in confusion. Why was she so jumpy today?
She shrugged her shoulders and swiveled the chair back around. I sighed, "Broccoli keish it is then!" I took the container from the fridge and closed it. I got two plates and set them down on the counter. I grabbed two forks and forked the food into one plate. I would've heated up the food in the oven, but I was really tired and I needed to make sure Brooke ate before she changed her mind.
I set the plate in the microwave and put it in for one minute and twenty seconds. I then tuned back to Brooke and smiled tiredly. She gave me a half smile that I could tell was forced. My smile faltered until it turned into a full blown frown. I knew Brooke would've told me what was bugging her instantly because she had before, so this had to be serious if she wouldn't tell me now.
I walked up to her and pulled her into my arms. I snuggled my face into her hair and whispered, "I'm not sure what's bothering you, Brooke... but I'm here for you. Please talk to me, okay?"
I felt her head nod up and down underneath my chin. I smiled and sighed. A noise behind me made me pull away from Brooke and turn towards the sound. Aiden.
My eyes widened and I whisper-yelled. "What are you doing down here, Aiden?"
He rubbed his eyes and said, "I was seeing if you were a burglar, but then I saw you from the stairs so I came down and smelled keish. So I decided to come and ask for some."
I opened my mouth to reprimand him, but Brooke beat me to it.
She walked up to Aiden and ruffled his hair. Wow, Aiden usually didn't let anybody ruffle his hair, not even Mom! "You can have some of mine, buddy."
He smiled up at her and wrapped her into a hug. He let go and said, "Thanks, Brooke!" His eyes widened and he yelled, "I gotta pee!"
Brooke chuckled as Aiden ran to the direction of the downstairs bathroom. I smiled at her, but frowned as her face fell to a more tired expression. The microwave had beeped when Aiden came down the stairs, so I grabbed the plate and set it on the counter. I grabbed another plate and fork and said, "Brooke, you are not letting him eat any of your food. He can have some of mine, but you are eating all of yours."
I put the food on the separate plates and turned to her. Her face had a shocked expression on it. She shook her head vigorously and said, "No way! I refuse to eat all of that! I'm not even hungry, so you're lucky I'll even eat at all!"
I was about to argue, but Aiden came back into the kitchen. He looked between us and walked up to Brooke. He hugged her torso and looked up into her eyes. "Brookey?" He started. Brookey was his nickname for her. His other nickname for her was Founder of Brookeland. "Brooky, why haven't you eaten anything since you left the hospital? Are you sick?"
She shook her head and sighed. She looked away and muttered, "I'm not sick, I just haven't been hungry, A-man."
He nodded his head slowly, processing her words. He glanced at me, then back at Brooke. "Brooky, you have got to eat all of your dinner or else me, Cason, and Mommy will be very worried about you!"
Brooke sighed. After a while, she turned back to him and nodded. I smiled and scooped Aiden into my arms. He was pretty small for his age after all. I moved a piece of his hair to the side and whispered, "Thanks, buddy."
He hugged me tight and whispered, "I don't want our Founder Of Brookeland to be sick and stuff. I know when you don't eat, you start feeling faint."
I hugged him tighter. I love my younger brother. I set him down and we all sat down and ate. At this point, our food was cold, so I heated it up again. We down and ate, laughing away all of our previous worries for the moment.
My mom came down at some point, probably because of all the noise we had been making. I didn't think she noticed I saw her, but I saw her watch us with a smile, then turn to head back up the steps.
I smiled and turned back to Aiden and Brooke, who had been discussing a video game they could design. They added crazy characters into it, like Chowder, Flapjack, SponegBob, and Patrick... even Nigel Uno from the show Kids Next Door!
I chuckled and joined in, adding characters of my own; the Cheshire Cat from Alice In Wonderland and Willy Wonka. We stayed up all throughout the night and into the early morning. Aiden was basically falling out of his seat from exhaustion, so I chuckled and carried him to his room. I tucked him in and closed his door. I turned and saw Brooke's room door close.
I sighed and walked into my own room. Tomorrow. I thought. The day your spirits will be lifted and you will hopefully forget about the accident.
