Chapter 24

"Oh! And use protection if you kids plan on doing that tonight! I'm too young to be a grandmother!" my mom yelled as we walked out the door. I froze, felt myself go red immediately and slowly turned around with a glare. She just stared at us with a big smile and waved us away before slamming the door.

"Wow," Nathan finally laughed and I sent my glare over to him.

"That is not funny. That is so embarrassing!" I cried and he smiled. He pulled me into a hug and kissed my forehead as I stood there, not bothering to move my arms.

"No it's not," he tried not to laugh, but failed miserably. "Come on let's go. Your dad is already glaring at me and the baseball bat on his hand is not helping."

I rolled my eyes at the image of my dad, but nodded and walked the few remaining steps to his car. After being a gentleman, he got in and drove away shaking his head as I asked the same question as before.

"So where are we going?"

"It's a surprise."

"You know you are just being cliché right? Every boy says that to their date, knowing the girl will just get even more frustrated and nervous about where they are going."

"Yeah. I know. And it works too. I thought you would know by the way I suggested you dress," he laughed and I looked down at my clothes again. Dark, blue jeans, white long sleeve shirt with a red undershirt, a red scarf and my black jacket.

"This looks like something I would wear when it's cold outside. Are we going to be outside?"

"Yup," was all he said and I groaned. It had only been about three weeks since we have started to date and he is still the annoying goof ball from before. He didn't change or treat me differently. He just held my hand more often, sat closer to me then before, hugged me more and even kissed my face more. He hadn't kissed my lips yet and I was itching to kiss him any time he wanted.

"Can you at least give me a clue?" I asked and he shook his head after a moment.

"We are almost there. Can you please be patient for a few more minutes?"

"Fine," I pouted and crossed my arms like a little girl. He laughed at me, squeezed the hand he had managed to get and then cleared his throat a few moments later.

"We're here."

I jumped out the car and smiled as the name came into view. A couple feet away, there were couples dancing and twirling around in a circle while music echoed around, making it even more entertaining.

"Joe's Ice Rink?" I laughed and he shrugged. I squealed, grabbed his hand and dragged him to the small booth on the side so we could rent our skates. He just laughed at my reaction and paid for everything as I kicked off my shoes and replaced them with the skates.

"Woah. Hold on speedy. You need to put them on near the ice, or else you won't be able to walk."

"That's why I have you to carry me," I joked but he took it for real. He shrugged, carried me bridal style and laughed as I squealed for him to put me down. "Don't you ever do that again!" I threatened him as soon as I was safe on the floor. He stood up expertly on the ice as I wobbled near the corner and he started to skate away as he wiggled his eyebrows.

"I won't make that promise."

"Nathan!" I shrieked as I tried to hit him without letting go of the side. I had never done this before, and I was so not letting go so I could plummet down to my death on this ice trap.

"Oh come on. Don't be a wimp. Just let go," he laughed as he skated back and forth. Show off.

"Come and help me you moron. You are not being a good boyfriend right now!" I yelled at him as he just laughed and skated away. Suddenly, he turned around and started to skate right at me, looking like he wasn't going to stop. I screamed, turned around to cover as much of my body and face as I could and waited for the impact.

I felt him brush against me so softly right before his arms engulfed me in a big hug. I screamed again and started to hit him lightly as he laughed at me.

"That was so not funny you jerk! You could have gotten hurt! You could have hurt me!" I cried and he just kept on laughing.

"Oh come on Claire. Have some fun. Here, grab my hand and I promise I won't let go."

I looked at his hand and after a few moments grabbed it. I wobbled at the beginning, but after the scares and tricks from him, I got the hang of it. Not by myself, but with a partner.

"See. It's not that bad once you get used to it," he confirmed after a few minutes of going around in a circle. I rolled my eyes, tightened my grip on him and kept on concentrating on my feet so I wouldn't fall.

"Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. It's time for the couples dance. So please grab your partner and get ready for this romantic night," the guys deep but velvety voice echoed throughout the rink. As people either headed out or grabbed their partner, I looked up at Nathan and raised my eyebrows.

"So..... may I have this dance?" He said, extending his other hand as I was still holding on to the other one with a death grip. I giggled as the lights dimmed and Jason Mraz I Won't Give Up began to softly play in the background.

"You may, sir."

When I look into your eyes

I couldn't help but to smile at the irony. Nathan was staring down at me as I stared up at him and I couldn't help but notice that this song was meant for us. We had come so far. With me being distant when we first met. With him never giving up to help me figure out who I really was and stop pretending to be someone else.

The whole world disappeared as we looked at each other and swayed lightly around in a small circle. I knew at that moment that if he wanted to kiss me, I wouldn't stop him or move away. I wanted him to kiss me. And I knew he wanted to kiss me back as his pupils dilated and he slowly inched forward.

Just as our lips were about to meet, I felt someone bump into us hard and I lost my balance immediately. I felt myself going down hard and I would have landed badly if Nathan hadn't taken the fall for both of us. I heard the hard thud as his head hit the ice and I landed on top of him, all my weight on him.

"Nathan!" I cried as he groaned and laid still. "Oh no Nathan!" I could faintly hear people talk around us, saying something about the paramedics on their way. I was so glad at the moment that Joe was smart enough to have his own emergency team and it wouldn't take long for someone to come.

I felt myself being pushed away lightly as two people in blue crouched down next to us and began to talk amongst themselves as Nathan groaned and tried to get up.

"No. Stay down sir. You may have a concussion. We need to check you out in a better room so we are going to have to take you. Do you remember where you are?" The male out of the two started to talk to him. The woman looked at me and raised her eyebrows as she spoke.

"Are you his date?"

"Girlfriend," I corrected and she nodded. In no time, they had him in a stretcher and inside the main building a few yards away from the parking lot. Nathan grumbled and protested the entire way there, but I just ignored him and focused on what the paramedics were saying.

"It doesn't look like anything serious happened, but we just need to make sure. A bump in the head can become something else if it is not seen, especially a bump from falling in ice. We are just going to do some tests and then we'll go from there."

I just nodded and stood back as they asked a grumpy Nathan a bunch of questions. Half an hour later, they left and he began to get up from the cot.

"Nah ah! Sit!" I scolded him and he frowned.

"I'm not a dog. Besides I feel fine," he barked and I smiled. I walked over to him as he laid back down and I began to run my fingers through his hair as he sighed in delight. I looked at his peaceful state and I couldn't help but to think of the last few minutes.

He was going to kiss me! He was going to freaking kiss me and then this had to happen. Did he still want to kiss me? Only one way to find out.

"I don't care. I care for your safety and as soon as they release you, we will go."

He was silent for a few moments and then he laughed. "This sure ruined the date and our moment didn't it?"

"No."

"No?"

"Yes."

"Yes?"

I laughed and cupped his face. "Life is not like books. I get to be the hero today and you are the damsels in distress. Now all that's left is the kiss."

I was leaning forward slowly as I spoke and when our lips were centimeters away, he murmured, "Then what are you waiting for?" and sealed my lips with his.
