03 - confusion

Way back when Blake and I were pretty much inseparable, I used to always look forward to Saturdays. I mean, I'm sure everyone does, but they were different for us. Saturdays for us was when the Jones' and the Pierce's got together for our weekly cookout. It was usually at our house, but sometimes it was at Blake's.

It was just so much fun, like the only high to my week. We'd always eat at the big picnic table we had outside in the backyard. Blake's parents, my parents, Blake, Sawyer and I. It was like we were this big family. Like we were all inseparable. I still look outside my bedroom window almost every day at that empty picnic table and wonder how we could have drifted apart. It always leaves an empty feeling inside me.

But before we gathered around the picnic table and ate, Blake and I would always head up to my room and play first. Running upstairs though, I always looked around and saw Blake's parents and mine laughing and getting along. Mr. Pierce was even always hugging and kissing on Mrs. Pierce like they were so in love. Blake and I being ten, we always gagged at it, but now I just wonder how in the world that love could have fizzled.

Blake didn't say much at all about it, though. All I got was that apparently they didn't live here anymore and that they split up or something. He was just so short and bitter about it that I didn't get much of an explanation.

It left me confused to say the least, but all I could do was wonder for now. Blake was angry, and I knew I couldn't push that. Not for now, at least. It was a miracle he was even letting me into his house. How long? Who could know. Healing takes time.

Now knowing that Blake was pretty much his own only source of income for both he and Sawyer, it made since that he was staying in such a small apartment. All it contained was a living room connected to a kitchen, a quaint room for laundry, and a hallway consisting of two bedrooms.

It wasn't bad, I supposed.

Nearly minutes after I had gotten my suitcases and walked into the living room, Sawyer was already warming up to me and showing me her limitless supply of Disney movies. She was already getting extremely excited to watch some with me. While Blake had walked off to who knows where.

Sawyer on the other hand had already started picking out a bajillion Disney movies for us to watch later. I was happy that she was so comfortable with me though. When Blake and I were friends, Sawyer was only a baby. So, if course she doesn't remember me at all, but at least she seemed to like me.

After Sawyer had picked out about ten movies, Blake walked into the room and said, "How did you find out where I live?"

I was taken aback for a second, but then answered, "Uh, I called your home phone and someone on the line gave me your address."

He then started to grumble and walk back into the hallway.

Well, okay then.

Not but moments later, someone I didn't recognize came through to the living room. He was tall, thin, and I was pretty sure I had never seen him before. Blake was walking behind him, and seemed to be grumbling to him about something.

"Blake, chill. I didn't know about it."

Wait, hold up.

That voice sounds familiar.

"It doesn't matter if you knew or not. Why would you give someone you didn't even know our address?" Blake griped.

Ohhhhhhhh.

I knew it sounded familiar.

The boy scoffed and replied, "She said she knew you, duh." Right then he noticed me, and winked.

Oh, brother.

Blake shook his head and grunted, "God, you're such an idiot."

The boy didn't take much time to make his way to me and introduce himself. "So, you must be Blake's friend. Helen?"

Helen? What the heck?

"It's Hadley." I said.

"Ah." He smiled, and put his hand out for me to shake. "I'm Mason." I shook his hand. "And if it weren't for me, you wouldn't have found your asshole over here." He pointed at a grumpy looking Blake. "I'm like your fairy godmother or something."

Well... Mason sure is, something.

"Uh, yeah. Thank you?" I said hesitantly. What do you even say to that?

Just then Sawyer budded in, "You're not a fairy godmother!"

"Oh yeah?" Mason said. "Well, I'm Hannah's fairy godmother. Beat that, squirt."

"It's, uh...Hadley." I interjected.

"No you're not!" Sawyer argued.

I watched as Mason walked over to Sawyer and argued back, "Oh yeah? If it weren't for me, Hailey wouldn't even be here right now."

Right then, I didn't know whether to be more confused as to why he was arguing with a five year old, or why he couldn't seem to get my name right. I didn't even correct him that time.

"Her name is Hadley, you moron." Sawyer sassily rebutted. Like dang, this kid is cute.

As they went at it, I walked over to Blake and said, "So, Mason is a friend of yours?"

He looked kind of taken aback when I spoke to him, like he wasn't used to it. "Yeah." He seemed so cut off, and I hated it. "He's been with me through a ton of shit."

I didn't want to believe it, but the way he spoke when he said that—angry—and the way he looked at me made me think that it was directed straight at me. That I wasn't with him through all of that. But what could I have done? He was the one that cut me off.

While Mason and Sawyer were still going at it, Blake took my suitcase and started toward the hallway, which I guessed was my cue to follow.

It was a short hallway with only a couple of bedrooms. Blake showed me into one that as soon as you walked in, you knew it was Sawyer's. If the bright pink walls and Elsa bed cover didn't give it away, I don't know what would.

"Oh, I don't want to take Sawyer's room." I said, feeling bad to take it while I'm here.

"She can sleep with me until Mason moves out in a couple of weeks. It's fine." And with that, he set my suitcase down rather hardly and left.

I hated seeing Blake like that. The Blake I used to know was never as harsh and pessimistic as he is now. I could only wonder what made him like that.

But I was determined not to leave until I found that out.

A/N: hey guys! I've FINALLY got a new chapter! I'm so sorry I've been so MIA with this book, it's just been so crazy. But I promise I'm going to update more!

Also, as for a cast list, I usually never do them. I like for the reader to have their own imagination as to how they picture the characters, but if I get enough requests for it, then I would TOTALLY be down to do one. Just let me know!:)

One more thing... I know this chapter was short, but the next should be longer, so stay tuned! :)

Love you guys!XO
