07 - investigating

Blake and Mason ended up arriving home from work at about five-thirty, and I knew it'd be a while before they would go out. But I made sure to stress to April that I'd need her come over very soon after I text her, which is when Blake and Mason leave.

It literally felt like I was going on an undercover mission or something. But I liked it. I had never done something like this before, except maybe when I need to sneak out of the house without my mom hearing me. That's definitely mission fricking impossible.

Sawyer and I were coloring in the living room when the guys came home. And as soon as Blake entered the house, Sawyer had abandoned her bubble gum pink crayon and dashed into Blake's arms faster than I could even blink.

I felt like that was literally the only time I got to see even an inkling of a smile from Blake, when he was around his baby sister. She seemed to make him so happy.

Blake was quick to swiftly pick up Sawyer with a smile and kiss her on the forehead. "How was your day, Saw?"

She grinned a toothy grin and replied, "Great! Me and Hadley went to the park, and then we watched Dora, and played with my dolls, and now we're coloring." She pointed over at me, surrounded by mounds of coloring books and scattered crayons.

I then gave a small wave and an awkward smile.

Geez. I always seem to dampen Blake's spirits in one way or another.

"Oh, yeah? How'd everything go at the park?" Blake asked, not toward me in particular.

Sawyer replied for me, though. "Awesome!" She then began to list all of the things we did.

Me though, I began to think about that boy I saw at the park, that decided to speak to me. He said that he was a friend of Blake's, so I thought that maybe I should say something about it. Should I?

"Yeah, too bad squirt didn't invite me to come with them. Sounds like they had fun." Mason budded in.

Sawyer then stuck up her nose and replied, "You were being a whiny butt."

I then went for a laugh, but out came my infamous snort. I literally sounded like a fricking pig.

Blake used to make fun of and laugh at my snort until he was beet red.

I quickly covered my mouth and looked over sheepishly. Mason and Sawyer were already rolling, and Blake was just kind of sitting there, no facial expression.

But then I saw it.

A fricking grin.

Heck yes.

But it was gone as quickly as it came. Progress.
~

Blake and Mason ended up leaving around ten o'clock, to which I immediately texted April, and she was here in record time. I was then quickly able to leave and follow them before I was left too behind.

I low-key felt like I was stalking or something, but the bigger part of me reminded me how important this was. Sometimes you have to push a little to figure stuff out.

Definitely not stalking.

More like investigating.

As I followed Blake's car in mine, I made sure not to ride his bumper or anything. That definitely wouldn't be good. I stayed a good distance apart from them, so I wouldn't look too suspicious.

We ended up driving for only about seven minutes, into a pretty creepy part of town. It was dark, trashed, and scattered with too many bars and sketchy people. It suddenly gave me the feeling that I should lock my doors.

Click.

And double fricking click.

I watched as Blake and Mason parked in front of what looked like to be an abandoned building next to a couple of gas stations and bars. I made sure to park a bit away from them, so they wouldn't recognize me.

After I parked and quietly got out of my car, I watched as they both made their way into an alley way between the building, to which I followed carefully. The alley way lead out into an open area with two doors, to which Blake and Mason entered the one to the right.

The door lead into what looked to be a bar, but they didn't stop there. They kept walking toward the back, where another door lead to a set of stairs, like toward a basement or something.

God, this is so sketchy.

The one flight of stairs lead to what seemed to be a much busier bar. I mean, that's what it looked like at first.

But then I looked to my right.

There was a fighting ring.

A fricking fighting ring. That explained it. I didn't even have to figure anything else out.

That's what happened to Blake that night. He fought and must've taken a couple of pretty hard hits. But why? I mean, I get that the people here fight for money, but why is Blake doing this?

I tried to make myself blend in with the crowd as much as possible, without losing sight of Blake. I cringed as I watched him walk toward the fighting ring.

Blending in with the crowd sucked, because it was nothing but the stench of body heat radiating and alcohol, but Blake would kill me if he saw me here. And probably creeped out that I stalked—investigated—I mean.

In minutes though, Blake was up in the fighting ring and taking on a competitor, with Mason cheering by his side. He was definitely experienced, which made me wonder how long Blake had been doing this.

Being totally honest, I was at first terrified when I saw Blake in the ring, but he was actually really good. Like, the other competitor had barely touched him. He looked so focused, watching every move and swiftly moving every time. He looked like he had been doing this for years even.

As I watched his veins nearly pop out of his biceps and sweat pouring from his body, I started to cheer. He was demolishing.

Suddenly though, I heard a voice close to my ear saying, "Hey, stranger."

I sucked in a breath and turned around. It was...Jason? From the park?

"Oh, hey! Jason." I gave a small smile. Seeing him this close, pushed against so many bodies was different. He looked kind of different. I noticed how he had a small stubble on his upper lip, and how his eyes weren't brown, but a sickly green.

"Didn't think I'd see you around here." He said, alcohol on his breath. I tried not to cough, since he was so close to me.

"Me neither." I chuckled, and looked back over at Blake, still demolishing his opponent.

"Ah, here to support Pierce, huh?" He said, looking over at Blake.

"Yeah, I guess so." I said.

I watched Blake finish his opponent with not one, two, but three final blows and he was out cold. Blake had won.

Everyone then began to cheer so loudly, and yell as the ref held Blake's arm up in victory. Mason was going crazy on the sidelines, which was hilarious.

As Blake was standing there, I wasn't really expecting him to see me or anything since I was so far into the crowd.

But sometimes the inevitable happens.

He didn't see me at first, which was great. But then something happened, or should I say someone.

Fricking Jason decided to hoop and holler Blake's name at the top of his motherfricking lungs. And for some motherfricking reason, it caught Blake's attention right away.

And then he saw me.

Shit.
