-Chapter 1-
It had been a long day at the cafe, that by the time I had come home and had a shower I had somehow missed the commotion of my mum searching the house for my younger brother. I was halfway between looking for my headphones and juggling my phone charger when I heard my mum yell my name. "Catherine!" Her voice frantic, slicing through the quiet evening air.
My heart skipped a beat. I knew immediately that something was wrong. Without thinking, I stuffed my phone into the back pocket of my shorts, headphones forgotten and raced downstairs, my feet pounding against the wooden steps. I skidded to a halt in the kitchen where Mum stood, her wheelchair positioned awkwardly by the door leading out to the backyard.
"What is it, Mum?" My voice quivered slightly, betraying the worry that had already gripped me but I kept my bravado in place.
Mum had been a paraplegic for three years now—ever since the car accident that had left her unable to use her legs. It was just the two of us now; I had dropped out of school at fifteen to help pay the bills and look after her. So when something went wrong, I was the one who had to take charge.
"Luke just ran off!" Her voice was tight with fear.
Without a second thought, I spun on my heel and bolted out the door, my mind racing as I darted across the yard with a mixture of confusion, frustration and worry. Our property, though large, was bordered by a thick forest surrounding. A typical farm house. The back of the house stretched all the way to the edge of the woods, which made it hard for Mum or anyone really to hear anything passed the forest lines —especially with the sounds of the forest and the occasional wind rustling through the trees.
My heart raced as I made my way toward the edge of the yard where the trees began to crowd the space. Something didn’t feel right. The yard, once a serene area to relax and unwind, now felt menacing, like something was lurking just beyond the trees. My instincts yelling to turn around.
"Luke!" I yelled, my voice barely reaching above the rush of my heartbeat as I pushed through the underbrush. "Luke!" My feet barely found purchase on the uneven ground as I weaved through trees, my breath sharp and uneven.
Luke wasn't a troublemaker, but he was curious—sometimes too curious. I had no idea what would make him venture this deep into the woods alone. The only thing that made sense was that something had caught his attention.
Suddenly, I heard his voice, low and almost conspiratorial, drifting through the trees.
"Cat! You have to see this!"
I froze, my heart lurching. He called me Cat. It was a nickname that had stuck for years, though it always felt a little silly. But now, hearing it, I knew that whatever he was seeing, it was far from ordinary.
I pushed forward, my muscles burning with effort, until I finally found him—standing in a small clearing, wide-eyed and pointing at something ahead. His small form looked so out of place amidst the chaos of the forest, his hand trembling slightly as he gestured toward the strange sight in front of him.
I raised an eyebrow, my gaze following the direction he pointed. What I saw made my blood run cold.
"Holy shi—" My words caught in my throat, and I quickly bit them back. "Holy potato..." I muttered in shock. I never swore in front of Luke; Mum would kill me if she heard that kind of language.
What stood before us was a massive robot—its metal frame gleaming in the low light, its design strangely familiar. The robot was colored like Captain America—bold reds, blues, and whites—and it was locked in a fierce battle with another robot just as towering, but with silver plating and glowing eyes.
"Prime! What brings you here on this awful day?" The silver robot's voice boomed, its mechanical fingers transforming into a massive cannon.
The Captain America-inspired robot drew a sword, its blue eyes narrowing. I felt a wave of panic crash over me.
We were going to die.
"Luke, we have to leave now!" I hissed urgently, grabbing his arm. He glared at me, his eyes burning with defiance.
"No way!" He shot back, his voice full of reckless excitement.
"Luke, please!" I urged, my voice low, but the robots had already noticed us.
"Ah? You've brought company, Optimus." The silver robot's voice was dripping with disdain. "Here, let me fix that."
Before I could even react, it fired. I screamed, the shot narrowly missing us by inches, the force of the blast sending dirt and debris flying in every direction. I grabbed Luke, pulling him with me as we sprinted back toward the house, heart hammering in my chest.
"What are they?" Luke shouted as we tore through the woods, desperate to outrun the chaos unfolding behind us.
"I don't know, and I don't want to find out!" I shouted back, dodging branches and flying debris. My breath came in ragged gasps, and I could hear the distant sound of metal crashing against metal as the robots continued their fight.
Another shot echoed behind us, sounding eerily like the sharp, crackling blast of a hunter’s rifle. I winced as the noise reverberated through the trees, but I didn’t slow down. The sound of the shots—quick, loud bangs—felt so familiar. They sounded like something out of a horror movie, but far too close.
We broke through the trees, our feet pounding across the backyard—our large backyard now a blessing—just in time for another deafening shot to ring out in the distance. Followed by muted clashing of metal.
I could barely register the danger anymore as we pushed ourselves toward the back door, but I heard Mum’s voice echo faintly from inside the house. She probably didn’t hear the shots from the robots in the distance; the forest, with its dense trees, had muted everything.
The wooden door to the back porch was just a few feet away, and with one final burst of adrenaline, we crashed through it, stumbling into the living room, breathless and wild-eyed
I leaned against the wall, trying to regain some composure, but my heart was still racing.
"What happened to you two?" Mum’s sweet voice called out from the hallway. She wheeled herself into the room, her green eyes immediately locking on us, filled with concern—but there was something else too: frustration, especially when she turned her narrowed eyes to Luke.
"Luke, where the hell have you been? You gave me a heart attack running off like that!" Her voice was tinged with exasperation. "You know I can't just get up and look for you!"
I shot Luke a warning look, knowing he would only dig himself deeper into trouble if he didn’t explain himself carefully.
I stepped in quickly, my voice smooth as I covered for him. "Mum, Luke wanted to explore a cave he found in the forest." I threw him a quick, pointed glance, hoping he would just go along with it. "He got a little carried away."
Mum frowned at both of us, clearly frustrated but somehow relieved that we were safe. "A cave? You could have at least told me first!" She sighed deeply, her eyes softening. "I’m just glad you're okay. But you really need to stop running off like that Luke. You been doing that too often lately."
Luke, looking guilty, nodded. "I'm Sorry, Mum."
I nodded in agreement too, but my mind was still on the crazy battle we had just witnessed. We had barely made it out alive, and it felt like our world was about to change forever.
Luke and I exchanged a glance, and he put on a fake grin.
"Mum, Cat, and I are going to play some Xbox," he said, trying to sound cheerful, and dragged me upstairs before I could protest. Mum smiled lightly in dismissal before rolling off to her study where she often knitted.
Once the door to Luke’s room slammed shut behind us, I cursed under my breath as I tripped over the mess scattered across his floor. He seriously needed to clean up his room.
Luke raked a hand through his blonde hair, his hazel eyes wide with lingering fear. "Cat, do you think they’ll find us?" His voice was shaky, and it made me feel like the world was closing in.
I sighed, trying to sound calm as I pushed a pile of clothes out of my way so I could sit on his bed. "I don’t know. I don’t think so. It’s going to be hard for them to recognise two random people."
Luke shot me a pointed look. "Says the one with blue hair."
I scowled, my cheeks flushing slightly. "A lot of people dye their hair blue, you know!"
He rolled his eyes. "Yeah, right. They’d recognise you from a mile away!"
I opened my mouth to retort, but before I could stop him, Mum’s voice rang out from downstairs. "You two, quit yelling in the house!"
We both sighed and paused for a moment, shoulders sagging. I muttered, "I’m sure they’ll be gone by now."
Luke looked skeptical. "Oh sure, because two giant alien robots just disappear without a trace."
I rolled my eyes. "Fine. I’ll check." I marched over to the window and leaned out, scanning the backyard for any sign of the massive robots in the forest.
"I see nothing," I said flatly.
Luke squeezed his head out beside mine, squinting into the darkening yard. "Huh, they actually did disappear."
But just as I was about to relax, a shadow crossed the window. A robotic face—smooth, metallic, and far too close for comfort—appeared in our view. We both screamed and scrambled backward, tripping over each other in our panic.
"Hush," the robot’s baritone voice rumbled, smooth and commanding. "I will not hurt you, humans. My name is Optimus. "
The voice sent a chill down my spine, my breath freezing in my throat.
"This is so cool!" Luke shouted, completely oblivious to the danger. He scrambled toward the window to get a better look at the giant machine, but I yanked him back.
"Stay down!" I hissed. His eyes locked on mine, full of defiance, but I kept my grip firm.
Optimus’ massive, metallic face tilted slightly as he spoke again, his voice calm but insistent.
"I will not harm you. But if you wish to understand what’s happening, you must come outside. There is much to discuss."
I shook my head, a wave of panic sweeping over me. "No, absolutely not! You don’t know what you’re getting into. This is insane."
Optimus’ glowing eyes blinked once, then he crouched slightly, as if trying to make himself less intimidating.
"I understand your hesitation, young one. But I am here because you are in danger. Your world is on the brink of something far bigger than you realize." His voice softened a fraction. "I have been sent to help, not harm."
Luke, however, was practically vibrating with excitement. "Cat, we have to go. We can’t just leave him out there. This is, like, the most epic thing ever!"
I glared at him. "This is not a game, Luke. This is real. I don’t care how cool you think it is—this is dangerous!"
But before I could stop him, Luke pushed past me and leaned through the open window. "Come on, Cat. It’s a robot! An alien one! When do we ever get something this exciting in this town?" His voice was full of childish wonder. "We can’t just ignore him."
I grabbed his arm, pulling him back into the room. "Luke, are you out of your mind? Mum is downstairs. She could hear us, or worse, see him!"
Optimus’ voice interrupted, steady and firm. "Do not worry, human. I am currently hidden from your mother’s view. I am not here to cause her any alarm. I only wish to speak with you both."
I could feel my pulse hammering in my ears. Optimus was out there, waiting, and I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to run or to stand my ground. The fear of the unknown gripped me.
"How do we know we can trust you?" I finally managed, trying to steady my breath. "You’re a giant robot, and we have no idea what you want."
Optimus’ eyes flickered, and I swore I saw something like a sigh pass through the mechanical being.
"You have every right to be cautious," he said, his voice a deep rumble of understanding. "But trust me, I would not be here if it were not urgent. The threat you are unaware of is very real. Please, come outside, and I will explain everything."
Luke’s eyes were practically sparkling, and I knew there was no stopping him now.
"Come on, Cat. We can’t just leave him out there! I’ve always wanted to meet someone like him!" Luke’s voice was a mix of excitement and pleading. "Please, let’s just go talk to him. What harm can it do?"
I didn’t want to go. Everything in me screamed to stay away. But deep down, I knew that Luke wasn’t going to back down. And if there was even a chance that Optimus was telling the truth, I had to find out.
I shot a glance toward the door. Mum was still downstairs, probably lost in whatever she was doing in the study. There was a chance we could sneak out without her noticing, but it had to be quick.
"Fine," I muttered, my voice low and resigned. "But if anything goes wrong, I’m blaming you, Luke."
Luke grinned, practically bouncing off the walls with excitement. "Yes! This is gonna be awesome!"
I hesitated for a moment before opening the window wider, glancing out to make sure the coast was clear. Optimus was just outside, carefully staying low, his massive form hidden behind the cover of a large tree in the yard.
"You’re sure Mum won’t hear us?" I asked quietly, still unsure.
Optimus’ voice came through softly, almost as if he were trying to reassure us without drawing attention. "I will remain out of sight, as I said. Your mother will not know of my presence."
Luke looked at me eagerly, then back at Optimus. "Let’s go, Cat! He’s waiting!"
I bit my lip, glancing back at the door one more time before reluctantly climbing out the window. Luke followed me, barely keeping his feet on the ground, as we crept through the yard, doing our best to avoid making any noise.
As we stepped carefully into the shadows, I could feel the weight of the decision pressing down on me. My thoughts were a whirlwind, but I kept moving forward, hoping that I wasn’t making the biggest mistake of my life.
Once we were close enough, Optimus rose from his crouch and towered over us, his frame now fully visible but still cautious, as if waiting for our next move.
"Thank you for coming," he said, his voice softer now, almost comforting. "I know this is not easy, but it is necessary. There is much to explain, and I can only hope you will listen."
Luke looked up at the giant robot in awe. "We’re listening, Optimus. What’s going on? What’s happening to our world?"
I held my breath, my heart pounding in my chest. This was it. Whatever happened next, there was no turning back.
