Chapter Thirteen: Truths Revealed

The final task was here. I was anxious to see what it would be. After the last two...I knew it wouldn't be anything simple. I made sure to Harry good luck that morning because I knew I wouldn't be seeing him until after the task was complete. I met up with Dasha and Eowyn to get seats. The task looked like a maze. It couldn't be that simple though...I couldn't even picture what they would be facing in there. We sat by schools, Beauxbatons was to the left of us and Durmstrang was to the right. Hogwarts was in the middle because we took the most space. The entire school was there to watch as well as a few more adults than usual. The champions parents had come as well, except for Harry's of course, but the Weasley's showed up for him and I'm sure that made him happy.

The judges and professors were all standing around by the front of the maze. Strangely...I don't know I never noticed, this but Barty Crouch had just disappeared. He was no longer a judge and after the second tournament I haven't heard a word about him. I meant to ask Harry about that. It was rather strange actually, especially because he was in charge of the tournament.

I was seated with Dasha and Eowyn. Unfortunately we were right behind Draco and he knew that. He had to make very loud and clear comment about how he hoped Potter didn't come back and how Krum better win. I ignored him and waved to Jake who sat with the Gryffindors down near the front. The champions were in their positions to begin and the music was playing. It was actually a very exciting atmosphere, except for the fact that it was going to be dangerous. There was a large maze set up and different entrances for the champions. Once they were in, we wouldn't be able to see them anymore. It would be like the second task.

Dumbledore then made his speech and went to begin the countdown when Filch had a misfire and set off the cannon. They were then all sent in to the maze by ranking, and the maze sealed itself back up. I guess there was no turning back now. I just hoped the best for Harry.

An hour passed and no one has come back yet. I was beginning to get impatient. I just wanted to know who had won already! Fleur had been removed once more. I was surprised she chosen as a champion in the first place. She never completed the second task either. Red sparks were sent up and she was dragged back looking rather shaken up by a few of the rescue wizards. Then Krum had to surprisingly be dragged out a while later after red sparks were sent up, he looked nothing like himself and had this strange look in his eyes. I suppose the maze really does change you.

This meant Harry and Cedric were the only ones left. Which Hogwarts had won! Kakaroff looked furious once Krum was the one who they had brought back. Draco stopped his commentary after that. He finally realized that Harry could win this thing. Just one more thing Harry would have over him. Hogwarts cheered though, because we had already won. Now we all had to wonder, who would be the official Champion?

It was then that with a loud snap, Harry and Cedric were both laying face down in the ground with the cup. Was it a tie? No one seemed to care at the moment as all of Hogwarts burst into cheers. I cheered loudly and screamed Harry's name, knowing Malfoy would be listening. The row in front of me didn't cheer, but I didn't care. I was glad to see they were safe. Though as Harry began moving he didn't look too happy. I hated that I was in the back, because I could barely see, but from what I could see...it looked as if he was almost crying while screaming something. Dumbledore and Moody rushed over.

Then I noticed Cedric hadn't been moving. The cheers quieted down because neither Harry nor Cedric responded to them. In fact now that it was quiet I was sure that Harry was screaming. Cedric still wasn't moving. Fleur who was standing rather close to them screamed as Dumbledore flipped over Cedric...his lifeless body. Oh Merlin...

"He's back!" I could hear Harry cry now in the dead silence. "He's back...Voldemort...he's back! He killed him." Everyone in the audience stopped making noise. I didn't know what to do at the moment. I wanted to help him, but how could I ever do that at a moment like this.

"He's dead!" Cornelius Fudge, the Minister, who was a guest at the tournament had yelled with fear in his voice. "Diggory is dead!" I couldn't believe it. After that was announced, everyone broke into murmur and gasps, yelling out how Cedric was dead.

"My boy!" someone yelled and everyone quickly silenced. It was Cedric Diggory's father who was running full speed down the stands as he ran over to his son. Harry was dragged back by Moody. I could see the tears streaming down Harry's face as he fought against Moody. "My son!" his father cried once more. My heart broke, how awful this sight was. I can't believe he had died. I thought they said that this time would be safe.

Harry was dragged out of there and we were all commanded to stay in the stands as they removed Diggory's body. Although I didn't know him, I could have cried after watching his father's reaction and then his mother's tears as she followed them out. It was the most terrible sight I have ever seen.

We had been in our common rooms since the previous night. After everything was cleared out, we were lead back to our common room and were commanded not to leave until told so. I was dying to know what had happened. I wanted to run to Harry and ask questions but I knew that if I was in that situation, I would not want anyone to be shooting questions out at me. So I would give him time, yet something in my mind was ringing.

He's back....Voldemort is back...Did I hear that correctly? If I had, then I didn't know what would happen anymore. The common room was quiet, even Malfoy wasn't making any comments about it. I think everyone wanted to know what happened that night.

The week went on. We were only allowed to leave for meals, but finally later that week we were allowed to go back to classes. There was gray and dull feeling around the school. No one was acting cheerful. Everyone was walking around with their heads down. Dumbledore had made an announcement asking the school to not ask Harry any questions about the maze and to allow him time. I completely understood this, but Draco was convinced it was special treatment.

I had not seen Harry at all that week. I wouldn't blame him if he went home after all this because that's what I would have done. But no, Harry would stay around but I knew he was keeping his distance. I did see Jake though quite often and asked if he had heard anything due to him being a Gryffindor. "I haven't heard much, sorry," he said. "What I have heard though is that crazy Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher wasn't the real Moody, it was Barty Crouch's deranged Death Eater son who escaped from Azkaban." This completely shocked me. I wouldn't have guessed that, I just though Moody was a crazy old man. "He was using Polyjuice potion or something."

Another thing that had gone completely unnoticed with me until a few days ago was that Kakaroff had comepletely taken off. There were rumors that he had been a follower of the Dark Lord and that he had taken off in fear of what would happen to him. Also, the minister brought a dementor into the school to take care of Barty Crouch Jr. Which in my opinion was a stupid idea, now who was going to be there to testify for anything that had happened? I assumed thats why the whole school heard he and Dumbledore had a fight.

Once Harry decided to rejoin classes but he kept his head down. People did pass him with whispers, but that was expected and he ignored it. I waved to him but didn't want to ask him any questions yet. The real Professor Moody was rescued from inside the school and was sitting at the Professor's table although he wasn't teaching any classes. In fact, Defense Against the Dark Arts was cancelled for the rest of the year.

"Harry!" I said as I passed him later the next week. I gave him time and now I wanted to try to be a good friend. "I'm sorry I haven't talked to you...I just wanted to say I was sorry for everything that happened." He nodded at me. Yet had this weird look on his face. "Is...something wrong?"

"Carlie I've been meaning to tell you something. Sorry if I've been avoiding you...I just didn't know how to say it," he said slowly. He's bee the one avoiding me? "That night when I saw Voldemort, his Death Eaters had joined him...he called out their names. Nyx was one of them." Why didn't that surprise me? There were so many clues. All of those times he 'disappeared'. Elvira did tell me he never made it back after the Quidditch World Cup. Deep down, I knew all along.

"I'd be stupid to say I didn't expect it," I said putting my head down. "I'm so stupid..." Even Draco seemed as though he had been trying to tell me, but that only meant... "Were there others?" I asked.

"Yeah, Malfoy, Crabbe, Goyle, Nott, there was a large amount," he said to me. So this was my reality then. My so called 'father' was a Death Eater. Did my other siblings know? They must. I couldn't believe this. "Carlie, I won't tell anyone aside from Dumbledore." Then Harry and Ron had begun walking towards us. "And well, those two know as well."

"I should have seen this coming...he has been gone since the World Cup incident," I admitted. That should have given it away. The fact that I was living in the home of a Death Eater and I was completely oblivious to all the signs all this time.

"Are you going to turn him in?" Ron stated as she joined us and Hermione elbowed him in the ribs.

"I don't know..." I said. If I turned him in, who knows what would happen to me. He would most likely try to kill me and if not my mother would or some of my siblings. I was living in the home of a Death Eater. I think I knew all along, I just didn't want it to be true.

"Well why not? It's not like you can stay there now that you know," Ron said seeming a bit angry.

"Where else do I have to go?" I pointed out. I surely wasn't going to be staying with Jake because of the previous situations. I wouldn't even tell him about this actually. Dasha and Eowyn always travel on summer breaks and I don't want to be a burden that they have to take in.

"You can't be serious Carlie," Harry then added. "You're going to go back there after knowing what they did?" Harry said to me again seeming angry as well. Were they back to being mad at me once more?  "Look, it's for your best. Don't go back there."

"I'll try to figure something out okay? But I'm going to be late for class," I said to them and turned on my heel. I didn't actually go to class because I completely blew it off. I went back to the Slytherin common room to think about what Harry just confirmed. I needed to be alone for a while.
