Taking off
Jason felt his heart pound in his chest as he woke up that Wednesday. He couldn't stop thinking about the flight and how much he would miss his family. That morning at breakfast Jason had to bring up the subject.
" So kids, daddy has to bring the plane to Hawaii. I'm going to be gone for a couple of weeks." He braced for his children's replies, but instead he was surprised.
Jimmy and Greyson both said at the exact same time " It's ok dad, we understand. It's your work and that's how you bring home the bacon" after that Greyson couldn't stop drooling and saying bacon under his breath.
Gem simply stated " Daddy I'm really going to miss you! A lot, and I really hope your safe."
Jason couldn't help being a bit shocked by his children's response, but understood almost as soon as he saw Gem's eyes bead with tears. His children must have known what he was flying into, his wife had told them Jason suspected, and they had prepared. Jason soon felt his eyes stinging with tears.
" So kids, will you take me to the airport?"
All he heard was a couple muffled yeses and some sniffles.
**********
As soon as Jason saw the tower connected to the airport. His stomach all of a sudden started to churn and his head spun, yet, he didn't know why. He had flown a plane millions of time before, this time was different, he had a lot more to gain and loose in this flight. After that Jason couldn't remember much, only that his family's had said their goodbyes and tears were shed. He could feel tears daring to stream down his face now. He had to stay strong for his family and for his passengers, after all, on the plane passengers must come first.
Jason took his seat in the pilot area and propped the picture of his family against the window.
" Another trip away from Amber and the kids?" The co-pilot Fredric sat down next to Jason.
All Jason could do was nod without bursting into tears. He still had to fly his plane to get home.
"Ladies and gentlemen, if you could please take your seats, we will be lifting off momentarily." Jason realized he had to force the words out of his mouth, and still they were shaky and unsure. He had never made this big a decision before.
After the flight attendants made sure everyone was bucked and ready the plane took off. Jason only allowed himself to shed one tear as he flew the plane into what could be his death, flying a plane for three days straight, across water, with 376 people in back, exited to get to Hawaii. All Jason could think of was passengers come first.
