Chapter I
I guess . . . I should start from the beginning. It was early November when they first arrived to the small town of Winterpond.
I'll never forget when my best friend, Allison, came up to me before classes that morning. It was the moment that would spawn a series of moments that would change my life forever.
"Have you seen the new kids?" She started excitedly. Always hyper, that was Allison's only mode. "Look, here they come now!" She grabbed onto my arm, practically hanging off of it as five teenagers walked down the hall. It was hard to miss them, the congregation of students parted like the Red Sea. All of them had dirty blond hair, and their faces. It was hard to explain. They looked like models. Like, you were so enraptured in looking at them that you didn't realize you were starting. Until their piercing blue eyes met mine. I quickly glance away from the one I had been staring at. Noticing how much everyone else seemed to be swooning over them.
There was three boys and two girls. All varying in height and stature. The tallest one had his hair slicked back. He looked as if he had stepped right out a biker movie from the 80s. With a leather jacket and denim jeans to match.
Next to him was the second tallest boy, this one clearly the jock of the family. His hair was longer than the first's, his hair going down to the back of his neck. It didn't look shabby though, just like everything else about this strange bunch, it seemed perfect. He was wearing a football jersey and while he wasn't overly muscular. You could tell he could probably do some serious damage in a fight.
Next to him was the girl I had originally been staring at. She had plump, dimpled cheeks and her hair was curled around her shoulders. Her eyes were wide, almost unnaturalistic, but yet again, somehow she made it work. She was wearing a long flowing dress that came down to her ankles. Her arms were covered in a black, lacy fabric. On anyone else it would have made them look out of place in time, for her it made her look elegant.
Another guy was on the other side of the tallest one. He was short and the thinnest of the three guys. Curls filled his head and defined his short hair. Freckles peppered his cheeks. He looked like he was straight out of some old time wild west movie. He was the most sanely dressed of the bunch, wearing a polo shirt and khakis.
Next to him was the final girl. He hair was cut close to her neck, slowly curling inward from the top of her head. She had a slight face that reminded me of a fox. She was wearing a dress that showed off her arms and went down to her a little above her knees. She walked with a certain pazazz, and you could tell she had the mentality to handle herself.
After they had walked off, dispersing to their separate classes, Ally started again. "Did you see the one in the leather?" She asked.
"Yeah." I said sarcastically, "I saw them."
"His name's Martin. He's hot. He might not know it yet, but he's mine," She growled.
"Ok, first, we've been at school for literally five minutes, and you've already figured out his name. Which is scary. And second of all. Ew!"
She chuckled. "I have my ways Nik. And besides, you're just jealous you can't get a date as easily as I can." She patted me on the shoulder, smirking, before walking off to her class.

The next few hours went by slowly. The class before lunch, I had to pee. Badly. Usually I don't like to go to the bathroom at school. It's not always the safest place for someone like me. But I literally felt as if my bladder was about to burst. I grabbed a hall pass as soon as I had the chance and booked it down the hall.
Between the clap of my shoes hitting the linoleum floor, I could hear the faintest voices up ahead. There were two.The conversation, from the tone of what I could hear, was getting heated.
"Well I don't care what you want!" One of the voice yelled loud enough for me to hear.
I had a choice. I could either go pee like my entire body was telling me to do. Or I could eavesdrop. Like that small, devilous part of my brain was urging me to do.
Dammit brain.
I slipped off my new shoes to keep quiet, and walked closer to the ever growing argument. I silently pressed myself against the wall, trying to ignore the stench of the trash can next to me. I clenched my shoes tighter, trying to make sure they didn't fall out of my hand.
"I'm not going to do it." A husky voice growled.
"You have to. You're new to this. It's only going to get worse." The first voice sounded again.
There was silence for a moment, as if the huskier voice was contemplating what to say.
"You're having relapses. I know you don't want to hear it. But you have to. You're a danger to everyone here if you don't and you know that." The first male said again.
"I-I can handle this." The husky voice cracked. "I'm not a monster."
"Doing what you're doing now is only going to make it worse."
The first thought that went through my mind was what the heck were they talking about? What wasn't he doing that was dangerous?
I peeked my head out from behind the corner, trying to see who it was. Two of the blond kids stood there. Looking at each other. The one in the football shirt, Calix, I'd heard last block from Ally. And the one in the polo shirt.
They turned to walk back together. Towards me. I lunged backwards to not be seen, kicking the trash can over as I went. It startled me as it clattered to the ground, causing me and my shoes to fall, smacking against the floor. So much for a graceful exit.
I clawed to get up, before feeling someone grab the back of my shirt and yank me up. Before I had time to think, the person holding me shoved me up against the lockers, the crash sounded, ringing my ears. I was facing my pursuers. Calix stood, firmly holding me against the lockers with hate in his eyes.
The one in the polo shirt spoke. "What'd you hear?"
I was petrified. It's hard to describe the fear and anger that filled his voice. I tried to explain myself, but I couldn't say anything.
"What are we gonna do to him?" Polo said. After a few moments of silence, with Calix not saying anything, polo shirt continued. "What's your name?"
"N-Nikolus. Nikolus Parker."
"Well, Nikolus Parker, my name's Mat. And this is Calix. Let him go Calix." My back slide down the lockers fast as Calix dropped me. He then reached down an extended hand to help me up. My knees had given out.
"Don't tell anyone what you heard. You understand?" Mat said. I shook my head up and down.
Calix smiled at me softly. He hadn't said a word since he realized I was around. Which was terrifying. But he had a certain, calmness to him.
They walked away, leaving me standing up against the locker. I didn't have to pee anymore.
