Pushing it
Crunch, Chrunch, Crunch.
I gnawed at my lip, trying desperately to focus on Mrs. Corkay's lesson through the obnoxious sound of cheetoes being devoured by the boy at my right. I caught bits and pieces of information about some war as he chewed loudly. I flinched with each violent chomp, tapping the eraser of my pencil soundlessly against the desk.
Hopelessly, my gaze fell on the girl in front of me. I could see her moving her head from angle to angle as she took selfies. I rolled my eyes, watching her reflection's lips pucker.
You're not a fucking duck, I thought snidely, discreetly raising my middle finger to the level above her shoulders so that she'd she know just what I thought of her selfie when she went through them later.
Mrs. Corkay went on as the crunching continued and I glared daggers at the full-size chip bag - not that tiny vending machine shit. No, this boy had fucking gotten this bag from a visitor.
Crunch, Crunch, Crunch.
I gritted my teeth, blood boiling.
Jesus, I thought. Lunch is only thirty fucking minutes away.
Crunch, Crunch, Crunch.
This time he added a little crinkle of the bag.
Crunch.
Oh.
Crunch.
My.
Crunch.
God.
"Shut the fuck up!" I stood, sweeping the bag clean of his desk, sending cheetoes across the floor. He froze in surprise as the entire class turned to look at me. "Lunch is in a half an hour, you can fucking wait like the rest of us. I don't need you crunching fucking cheetoes in my ear when I'm trying to fucking hear the teacher." I spoke slowly and deliberately, looking him directly in the eye. "Unlike you, I don't want to fucking bomb the benchmark so I can graduate and get the fuck out of here."
"Ms. Sheppard." Mrs. Corkay tried, but I wasn't fucking finished.
"And you, " I directed my rage to the selfie taking girl. "I'm all about you being a duck on your own time, but if you had half a fucking brain you'd pay attention so that you don't end up working at McDonald's." Her lips parted in shock as I motioned to her Iphone. "That's right, honey. Daddy's not going to spoil you forever."
"Jesus." I finished in exasperation, letting my hands drop to my hips.
"Damn." I heard someone breathe.
Damn indeed.
