The race
The town was impersonal and grey. No-one would call it cheerful, either.
Ermelinda jumped onto the rooftop where Amber should have been.
Only she wasn't.
Ermelinda sat down, legs dangling across the fifty-foot drop.
"Hi."
Ermelinda yelped and turned around to see Amber. She looked like she had been there for ages.
"You scared me!"
Amber smiled. "Race to the diamond mines?"
Ermelinda hurridley flipped a few switches, pressed a few buttons and leapt onto her board. As she rode off the rooftop, Amber was behind her.
She carried on at full speed for five minutes, her hair whipping her face, the air freezing her arms. It was exhilarating.
She noticed that Amber wasn't there. Amber wasn't anywhere.
Braking hard, Ermelinda landed.
A gleeful laugh met her ears.
Amber appeared from behind a pile of rocks, holding a large diamond.
"How did you get here before me?"
Amber turned her board over and pointed to a switch Ermelinda hadn't known existed.
"Lets go home. How long will the diamond last us?"
Ermelinda grinned. "A month."
Amber's face brightened. "Come on!"
They climbed the abandoned office block nearby and launched their boards off the roof.
The seas of life were calm.
