Chapter 13
"Listen, guys, you're right! But I've made new friends there, and Ireally want to say good-bye to them instead of just disappearing offthe face of the earth," I said, sniffling.
So we all agreed that Thursday was going to be my last day at ISD,even if it meant having to attend summer school. Although I feltrelieved this dramafest would be over soon, I couldn't help but feel alittle worried about my friends in the science club. !!
IN STUDY HALLI was so stressed out about everything that I barely got any sleep lastnight. My goal was to survive my last day at ISD. Things couldn't possiblyget any worse, right?!WRONG!
During breakfast I got a text from Tunisha! She asked me to meet her at the fountain right before study hall to discuss OUR Jannat problem. I texted "???," but she didn't respond.
During lunch the science club members sat at my table and chattedexcitedly about the event tomorrow. They thanked me for everything I'd done and told me the club had aspecial award they planned to give to me at the party. Then everyonestarted cheering.I didn't have a choice but to break the bad news.
"Actually, TODAY isgoing to be my last day at ISD. And even though I won't be able toattend the science club party, I'm sure it's going to be a hugesuccess!"I totally didn't expect what happened next."Mallika, if YOU'RE not going to be there, then why should we evenbother?!" Siddharth muttered in disappointment.
"I agree!" said Ashi. "You talked all of us into doing this, and nowyou're BAILING on us!""That's NOT fair!" everyone complained at once.
I had to tell them about the drama with Tunisha and Jannat and how I needed to leave before things got even worse.
"But you told us to stand up to Jannat and not let her close downour science club. If you leave early, YOU'RE letting Jannat WIN!"Siddharth argued.
I had to admit he had a good point. But when I explained that I wasstressed out and leaving early might possibly resolve my problems, everyone finally understood.I was really disappointed by what they did next.
"We're voting to cancel the science club meeting and allow it tobecome the selfie club," Siddharth muttered. "Write 'YES' or 'NO' onyour ballot and put it in the box, please. Nikki, you can count them."
I was like, JUST GREAT !! As I counted the ballots I got a hugelump in my throat. There were six votes, and all of them were "YES!"for canceling the meeting. My friends had given up and Jannat had WON!
The rest of the day seemed to drag on forever.I decided I'd clean out my locker and turn in my student ID cardAFTER I met Tunisha at the fountain. . . .
