Carolina
The sound of distant thumping wakes her from her slumber.
With sleepy eyes, she reaches out and blindly fumbles for her phone, bringing it to her face.
6.53am.
The thumping sounds again and she realises it's coming from her front door.
Who on god's earth would be here so early on a Saturday morning?
She angrily throws the covers back, shoving her arms in her dressing gown before she shuffles to the door, opening it to reveal him on the other side of it.
Her other half.
Bouncing up and down on the balls of his feet in excitement, a grin from spread over his face as he greets her.
She crosses her arms over her chest and questions why he has either the gall or the stupidity to be waking her up so early.
Most men would shy away from her moody temper, but he knows she's all bark and no bite.
Actually that's a lie.
He doesn't mind the odd nip from her every now and again.
He gestures grandly to the morning sky and then towards his car before telling her how he had been inspired by the morning sunrise to grab the proverbial bull by the horns and do something completely spontaneous and he wanted to do it with her by his side.
Road trip.
She pulls her dressing gown closer to her body with one arm as she rubs her eyes with the other.
Was he insane?
Maybe.
Was he mad?
Quite possibly.
Hard to resist?
Absolutely.
He jumps up onto the top step, wrapping his arms around her before lifting her up and twirling her around and setting her down on the ground.
Well?
Throw caution to the wind.
Let's swim before we drown.
She answers with a kiss, knowing she'd follow him anywhere, go anywhere with him.
Always with him.
She pretends to protest but he can see how feeble it is so he moves forward quickly, scooping her up and over his shoulder, running to her room as she screams and laughs in delight.
He throws her onto her bed, falling down next to her and plants a kiss on her cheek before smacking her playfully on the bottom.
She feels so good.
He shoos her with his hand to go and get ready so they can be on their way, which she does, hastily dressing before dashing to the bathroom, emerging after what feels like forever to him but looking as sweet and pretty like she always does.
Grabbing her overnight bag and then his hand, she hauls him off the bed and like giggling teenagers, they run out of her house and head out to his car.
Easing his car onto the road, he heads in the direction of the highway.
She asks where they're going and he shrugs his shoulders a non-committal gesture.
Wherever his pretty girl wants to go.
She bites her lip thoughtfully and momentarily thinks, glancing at out the window at the passing scenery before looking back at him.
Crowded suburban houses and white picket fences soon give way to an array of shops, the beautiful morning drawing out the local townspeople.
The road takes them through the city, bustling with noise and traffic, people frantically trying to reach their destinations, oblivious to those around them.
The highway greets them and slowly the city skyline thins out behind them, leaving the white lines to guide them.
The mood between them brightens considerably when they begin to see more and more of the lush green fields, dotted with bursts of colour from flowers, or rows of ploughed lines.
She reaches over and grabs hold of his hand, lacing his fingers with hers.
Where should they head?
Just drive baby.
His eyebrows raise in response.
They continue to travel along, singing loudly and offkey to a variety of music.
ABBA, Fleetwood Mac, Bon Jovi, The Rolling Stones, Spice Girls, Prince and anything from the 60's until now.
He has the window down, one arm on the steering wheel while the other rests on the doorframe, his hand waving through the wind as they travel.
His wide framed white sunglasses that seem ridiculously silly, block out the bright sunlight, but do nothing to diminish the brightness of his smile.
She has her bare feet up on the dash, tapping a foot along to the beat of the song as she quietly sings along, her hair blowing in the summer breeze.
She pulls some chapstick out of his glove compartment and quickly applies it, he smiles knowing that only he gets to kiss those same pretty pink lips.
In her hands is a road map that she's studying, looking ahead to where they might possibly stay for the night.
Spotting a town further ahead, she lets out a small shout, momentarily scaring him and causing them to both laugh at his jumpiness as she points it out on the map.
Leaning over, she kisses him on the cheek as a form of apology.
He rests his hand on her bare thigh, gently squeezing it and he smiles.
She's all he thinks about.
The sun is setting as they pull into the out of the way motel, happiness radiating from the couple as he grabs their bags, heading inside to book a room for the night, eager to continue their adventure.
Ignoring the stare of the manager, they race to their room, throwing their bags on the floor before both jumping onto the bed, laughing as they hold hands and jump up and down like children.
Eventually she falls over from how hard he's jumping and grabs a pillow, throwing it at his head.
He falls to his knees, grabbing a pillow of his own to retaliate.
The war begins.
After many breathless moments later, they collapse in a heap, laughing and gasping for air as he pulls her close to him, inhaling her unique scent as they fight to catch their breath.
Yes.
She's all he thinks about.
