Chapter 31
Gretta sat at her laptop frowning. Arny carried two mugs of coffee in from the kitchen and set one beside her, cradling the other one as he slid into the armchair beside the sofa.
"Problems?" He sipped his coffee. "Careful, that's hot."
"Thanks. Yes and no to your question."
"Clears that up. Thanks."
"Danny got me the name of the person who's after the stamp; our old friend Wayne Jenner."
"You're joking. I thought he was in a home or something, recovering."
"Apparently there was nothing wrong with his brain. I wonder what happened to that April Weston Luane was hired by when she was partnering with Bishop. She never had a mention when the others were arrested." She started a search on Balsam Grove and discovered a link to an account in the name of Healer, which led her to another account that was filled with blogs from a number of contacts, all with health related pseudonyms.
"Listen to this." She read from a blurb on the screen that described a treatment for feisty females.
"Feisty females? Now why does that sound fam─"
"Do not go there, Arny. This is directions for subduing and maintaining compliance."
"Ooops."
"I have a very bad feeling about this."
"Gretta..."
"Listen. Danny says that Wayne Jenner is the party trying to get the stamp back. Wayne Jenner was installed in Balsam Grove for rehab by April Weston. April Weston has suddenly dropped out of the picture."
"So your conclusion is that she's the feisty female referred to in that blog. Why would somebody post something like that?"
"That's why I have a bad feeling. I googled Jenner's company and found some links to news items about board resignations and nasty in-fighting at some of the meetings while April was acting as Wayne's proxy. Methinks the lady was playing in the company money pool."
"He found out?"
"Likely. I just wonder how she got that control in the first place."
"Maybe she wrote the original recipe for subduing and maintaining."
Gretta looked up and gave him an appraising look. "Arny, that was very perceptive and worthy of some serious investigation."
"Huh? Why? I thought the stamp was your focus."
"It is, but there's a connection somewhere."
"What does it matter?"
"It will be the second woman manager of Balsam Grove to meet a questionable end."
"Gretta, stick to your own business; CONGA doesn't investigate potential homicides. Leave that to the cops."
"You're right; we need to stop him from getting that stamp or if he gets it, we need to take it back."
"Oh joy."
"First thing we need is confirmation of its whereabouts." She tapped a few keys and waited then tapped some more and began reading the screen. "Danny says that a deal was made with a civil servant in Niue and Jobba Ulanni acquired the stamp."
"So old Fatty was right, his boss is a crook." Arny picked up the TV remote and hunted for something to watch.
"Don't you ever have to be at the office any more? What exactly do you do now that you are on the letterhead?"
"I'm not, yet. I told you there was to be a formal gathering and a final announcement to all shareholders and staff."
"When's that? You promised me a new dress."
"No, you promised you a new dress; I just said wives and partners were welcome."
"Fine, I still don't know what you do anymore."
"I delegate. It's an art, Gretta, one you have never practiced."
She closed her laptop and stood up, straightening her top. "Then I guess I'd better get on with doing what I do best." She left the room with one of her familiar strides, telling Arny he had just booked into the dog house.
-----------------------------
Wayne woke with a small headache over his eye and he lay in bed staring at the ceiling for a long time before making the decision to get out of bed. He went to the window and looked out on the rolling lawns of the home, the scattering of walkers and wheelchairs as residents were pushed and guided into areas where they could sit and ruminate about their lot, at least those that could.
He saw Carl sneaking a smoke behind one of the gardener's huts and spent a few minutes wondering about keeping the man on and what might happen if he dismissed him. Ever since he had moved April to the hospital, Carl and his buddy nurses had conducted themselves in a suspicious manner.
He had made a huge mistake allowing them to have April as a virtual slave. The anger he held for her consumed him at the time but as it passed, he felt less interested in her former actions and as a result, also felt a touch of guilt over his treatment of her and made the effort to atone by installing her in a hospital program of treatment and therapy. He sighed, stretched and went to his bathroom to wash and shave.
The phone was ringing in the office next to his bedroom when he came out and he hurried to pick it up, cracking his knee on the corner of the desk as he did.
"Bugger!"
"Mr. Jenner?"
"Sorry, yeah. Who's this?"
"Two Oceans Courier Service. I have a package for you and I require a signature."
Wayne looked at the phone and saw that it was the intercom and not the telephone. He told the man to wait, that he would be right down and he hung up, grabbing his jacket and slipping it on as he went.
The package contained a sealed envelope and a letter with an account number on it, directing payment to the number in the code name of Joun. Wayne opened the envelope and swore aloud. A note explaining that the key code for a safety deposit box at the same location as the account in the letter, would be released when confirmation of the payment was received by the bank. Wayne was to contact a Garnet Cleaver, manager, for details.
He clamped his teeth together and glared at the offending package. Constable Jobba Ulanni is going to need a lesson in dealing with a Global company owner. He went to the telephone and dialed the bank's number and asked for Garnet Cleaver.
The banker was solicitous albeit a tad snobby, ignoring Wayne's urgency and setting a time for the following day. Wayne grunted his assent and hung up. He called the hospital and asked for the doctor attending Miss Weston.
"Mr. Jenner." The voice was flat and Wayne knew he was pissed at the call but he didn't care.
"Report please." Wayne snapped.
"Nothing has changed really, sir. It was only the other day she was admitted and examined. I gave you a diagnosis and a likely prognosis; there isn't much else I can tell you at this time."
"I want to know every change at any time doctor, understand?"
"Certainly, sir. I will make all the reports personally."
"Thank you. I appreciate that." He hung up again and glared at the envelopes once more, tossing them onto the desk carelessly.
