Chapter 4

Some may thing he was crazy, confused or terrified. What was in his mind? Running away the way he did, disobeying a direct order from his leader and owner, only for telling him to wait.

But waiting was not a viable option, not for him, specially when the life they were trying to save was Everest's life. Just as simple as that, he didn't regret anything, he was determined on what he had to do, find Everest.

Snow covered the trees on the near forest, wild winds hitting all they had in front, a road barely visible with a dense blanket of snow and no view of what was close. His heart was beating faster and faster, all his body shaking, a cold breeze made its way through his fur sending shivers down his spine, not something he was used to, but he didn't care at all.

The best option he had was turning his ambulance to his fire truck, and so he did before heading down to the forest. Still, it was hard to follow the road, the storm was really a problem now. It's been almost 15 minutes since he left Jake's Sky Resort and all he was able to see were trees and snow on the sides of the road, but nothing in front.

When he thought the view was finally clearing, the snow dissipated and the view terrified him. He hit the breaks with all his strength, the truck started stumbling a bit, just in the last second it stopped for good and Marshall could see what almost took his life. There in the end was an abyss waiting for him. The bottom was dark, he wasn't able to spot anything, he could only say that he wouldn't have made it if he would have fell into it.

His heartbeats were so fast he thought he would get a heart attack. He pressed his paw against his chest and tried to calm down, as he looked around trying to think of a way to cross without risking his life. His view cleared out but he couldn't spot the end on the big hole. What he did spot was what he thought at first was some ice shards in the cliff, but were part of a small ice bridge next to a big old oak tree. "That could work."

He slowly started to drive in by the edge, and as he got closer the bridge he noticed that it was quite similar to the bridge Everest used to cross to get to her igloo back on the South Pole, the day when they met...

His mind started to picture the moment when Everest and Jake almost fall when the bridge collapsed, which made him shiver. He just stopped recalling those moments when he started to drive across the bridge.

The ice beneath him was not making him comfortable, the entire structure was unstable. A blow of the wind could be strong enough to break it. Marshall thought about drive back and find another way to cross. If he was dead he wouldn't be able to find Everest anyway.

His fear came true when the bridge made a loud noise and soon, the ice was starting fall apart with him right in the middle.

Without thinking twice he hit the gas with all his strength. The bridge was collapsing right under Marshall's ambulance. "Come on, come on! You can do it!" He cried out loud. The fissure reached the back wheels, and then he realized that he could make it, but maybe his truck not. "Come on, just a little bit more...!"

Finally, the ice was destroyed entirely. Just in the last second the fire pup decided to get rid of it and jumped out of the ambulance. His paws grabbed the other end of the cliff as strong as he could and started to climb up. When his paws reached solid ground he peeked from the cliff. His truck caught on fire illuminating the dark of the abyss. It was hopeless, he had to walk now. But he was too tired to continue, and he had no protection against the freezing winds of the storm.

He walked for about 10 minutes before he found a small cave, where he lied down and slept until the next day.
