THE NEW GIRL
❝I grew up to the smell of the lake and the feeling of the woods.❞
♦ ° ♦ ° ♦
XAVIER
The wind howled, creating a song with the leaves that were slowly falling to the ground below; swirling them as they danced amongst each other, a rustle echoing upon the crowd below. Car sides when the pavements edge, students piling from cars and making their way up the school's path, a chatter resonating through the air as they mingled along with the friend groups, starting the day. From around the corner of the school, more students appearing from the shared parking, further filling the counter yard.
Leaning against the railing of the property's entrance, I heave a sigh, the wind tickling the strand of hair along my forehead. Flicking my head to rid of the sensation, my ears perk at the sound of thumping footfalls against the pavement as they grow near me.
"Yo! Xavier."
I turn, spotting Justin's frame weaving around others that stood against the school's building, heading toward me with a grin on his face. Within reach, I push my body from off the railing of the stairs as he greets me casually, his hand colliding against mine as he pulled me into a side hug, his hand patting my back before he pulls away— our fingers snapping.
"What's up, man? How've you been?"
I shrug, assuming my previous position, crossing my arms over my chest and my gaze finds the counter yard once more. "I've been good. My father worked my äss this summer," I tell him, shifting my arm to cup my nape.
He laughed, adjusting his bookbag and standing in the second step. "I can actually picture that."
Every-so-often students piled into the school entrance, some of their gazes catching mine before bowing their necks at the sight of me: continuing their way into school. I advert my eyes to my wristwatch, thirty minutes until homeroom started.
"You heard the news?" Justin suddenly asks, gathering my attention to him. "The male rogue and his family, I mean," he adds when my expression shifts.
I grunt, adjusting my weight on the steps. "My father informed me briefly that he arranged a meeting to speak with them, to dictate they're purposes," I stated.
He nods his head, allowing his hair to over his forehead. In one motion, he flips the strands from his vision, his eyes watching as a group of girls walk by; swaying their hips suggestively as they giggle and wave in his direction. His lingering gaze seemed to be all they needed to close the distance between them, one even dares to step closer to in their venture by us. The she-wolf holds eye contact with him until they were out of view.
I shake my head at their tactics. Justin looking completely won over, his head stays in the direction they disappeared to.
My hand swings and makes contact with his chest, the noise resonating loudly as he produces a loud 'oof!'. Wheezing, he gives me a look, frowning at me.
"I was just looking!"
"I'm sure Stella would think the same thing," I let sarcasm pour over each letter.
He wets his lips nervously, a look of fear crossing his features before he hangs his head. Lifting my eyes heavenward, we settle in the short moment of silence before he speaks again.
"You think the humans know about. . us?" he inquires, a thoughtful look.
I gaze ahead, now locking my gaze with the forest within reach of the school grounds. They swayed to the chill breeze, hundreds of the littered along the edge of the road, stretching as far as the eye can see. My skin itches with the presence of my wolf, yearning to be released to run wild for as long as he pleases, almost as if he wished to search for something.
I run my hands down my arms, willing him the throes my mind, soothing his eagerness as I return back to reality.
"Let's hope not."
A moment of quietness engulfs us once again, the counter-yard thinning with students, their buzzing conversations following them into the large building, heading to class. I glance at my watch once more, seven-fifty. Justin shuffles closer, the rustling of his jacket swinging my eyes away from the device and to his form, where I side-glance at him.
"The human girl is going to attend the school," he whispers, leaning toward me. "She should be arriving around the end of first hour."
I narrow my eyes at him, the statement unknown to me. "And how do you know this?"
He shrugs, leaning back up, lifting his arms up to interlock his fingers behind his head, tilting it back a bit to look up at the sky. "I heard the desk lady and the principal talking about it on my way here," he laughs.
"I heard she was a babe," he says even though he has a mate of his own.
That smirk of his forms on his face while he gazes at me, I sigh before inhaling, seeing the wheels in his mind churning. He assumed himself a matchmaker, trying and failing to put me with someone to release my unreached desires.
"That doesn't matter right now," I tell him, standing straight and focusing on his spoken words. "I wasn't informed of this. I'm supposedly the next Alpha? yet I wasn't notified, what if she's a danger to the pack or school?"
My chest rises and falls at the thought of a human in the school. We still don't know the intentions of the rogue, unsure if he has hidden motives for settling near the outskirts of our territory. Her father might have sent her here to spy. . .
"Chillax, dude," Justin warned, pushing at my shoulder. "They did a background check on all of them, and she's definitely clean. It's also very unlikely that she, a human, can be a danger to us."
He gives me a look as if my accusations of a human girl being dangerous was a joke to him—which seemed to be. At that moment the bell chimes loudly, causing the remainder of students that still lingered and chatted in the front to file toward the entrance doors.
Justin gives my shoulder a pat. "We'll talk about this after school, c'mon. Mr. Grey will blow a fuse if we're late again this week."

"We have ten minutes left of class so I have a bit of time to discuss. . ."
Mr. Grey drones on, his voice becoming nothing but background noise as I detach my conscious from the lesson, my eyes are drawn to the open window beside me with my palm resting on my cheek. The road was clear beside the occasional whiz of a car flying down the road, a moment passes when a black vehicle pulls up to the front of the school, parking into one of the spaces beside the pavement.
My ears pick up on the sound of an engine shutting off, the back door propping open. An unfamiliar scent reaches my nose as legs pop into view as a girl with dark brown hair, reaching past her shoulders side-steps the door and closes it behind her. Peering down, I remove my hand from my cheek, suddenly interested at the way her eyes scan the front of the school's structure, the glow of the afternoon glitter her eyes a lighter brown.
I examine her. Dark brows creased over sullen eyes as the wind swipes at her tresses that frame her forehead, revealing its squarish shape, her hand soon shooting up to remove the strands from her sight. She was deemed as an average looking human, yet to me, she seemed. . .much more. Her features brought the sense of familiarity, my mind having trouble pinpointing where from.
The sound of the passenger door opening adverts my gaze to its structure, a middle-aged woman stepping out — my focus immediately flickering down to her stomach catching a whiff of a different scent mingling with hers through the parted window sill.
'She's pregnant.' I thought.
I watch the two interact, my eyes mainly directed on the teen girl, further straining my ears to listen to their conversation.
"School isn't supposed to be beautiful, Mom, it's a hell hole and always will be," the girl says, her voice sarcastic, bringing her attention back to the school.
The woman wraps an arm around her shoulder, reeling the girl to her side. "Awh school can't be that bad."
In response, the girl gives a look to her mother, resulting in her laughing. Turning from the woman, she again returns her gaze back to the building when promptly she meets my gaze. A zap of electricity strikes the base of my spine, it's currently washing over the nerves as I inhale. We stare at one another, her intense brown eyes carve a path into my soul, awakening the beast from his slumber, he rumbles a response.
The sudden slamming of another car door breaks the stare-off, her gaze slipping from mine as a man walks around from the other side of the car. My nostrils flare, catching a whiff of his scent. It was the rogue. I growl lowly under my breath, sitting back at my desk but keeping my eyes on their forms.
"Xavier?"
I face away from the window and catch Justin looking at me with an arched brow. "You okay?" he asks.
I nod, shutting my eyes momentarily and inhaling deeply. Nodding, I return his gaze.
"Yeah, I'm fine."
Lingering for a second more, he turns back to the front. I shift my focus back out the window, only to find them gone, my thoughts began to run wild all filled with intense brown eyes.
The bell rings, signaling the end of class, the sound of chairs scraping against the floor and rumbling feet echo as everyone scrambles out the door. Mr. Grey shouts after them, instructing everyone to do their homework as he quickly hands out worksheets. I gather my things, being the last one out, Justin waiting by the door for me.
"What had you so focused outside?" he immediately asks.
I sigh, walking down the halls, a sea of students flooding the confinements of the halls. We head to the stairs that lead to the first floor, bounding down them along with other students.
"The human is here."
His eyes widen, "Are you serious?"
I nod, reaching the ground floor as the both of us turn the corner, the halls were crowded as people moved to their next class. Most shuffled out the way when felt my presence.
'Xavier!'
I pause for a moment, the voice echoing in my head. 'Yes, Dylan?' I felt Justin guide me over to the wall of lockers so that I can catch my surroundings.
'I met the human,' he tells me through mind-link, 'Her name is Abigail Simpson. .' he trails off cautiously, and I stiffen at the last name.
'The sister of—' he cuts me off.
'Yes,' he said hurriedly, 'I'm currently escorting her to her classes and I wanted to let you know that we're both heading your way in about—'
He never finished. All movement in the hallway stops as everyone's attention is brought up ahead. My eyes focus back and that's when I see her. Both the girl and Dylan stand at the end of the hall with every wolf's attention on them.
Her eyes dart around the room before she walks forward, ignoring everyone as they followed her form. Though she put up a façade of indifference, uneasiness comes off her in waves. Her attention is dragged to the lockers, Dylan by her side as her lips move, speaking to him. With her focus elsewhere, students in the hall begin to move again, quietly whispering to themselves, their eyes cutting to her every now and then.
Exchanging a few words, she unlocks her locker, a grateful expression thrown to Dylan as he pats her before walking our way. With his hands in his pockets, he pauses in front of me.
"How did you get her to talk to you?" Justin asks him when he was within earshot, still looking at Abigail.
"I. . talked to her," Dylan replies as if it was obvious, raising a brow.
Justin narrows his eyes at him, "You know what I meant—"
"No, I actually didn't."
"—she looks comfortable when she was talking to you despite everyone looking at her," Justin finishes.
All he does is shrug, Justin punching him in the shoulder, the action soon resulting in them diving into a small playful fist-fight. The halls were thinning with students, moving to their classes as the hall was near empty. My gaze lingers on the female, her hand coming up to close the locker after placing a few items inside, slinging her book-bag over her shoulder.
She spun on her heel, with her head down, concentrated on looking at the paper in her hands; her schedule, I presumed. As if sensing my stare, she slowly lifts her head, our eyes connect once again.
A jolt shots through my body, the same sensation flooding through me as the first, the lightness of her eyes brought alive by the hallway lights. Time begins to slow as she walks past, strands of hair drifting behind her in waves from the movement of her body holding eye contact. Up close, she was more than average, long lashes curling over her eyes as blinks.
The scent of cinnamon and apples flows into my nose, coating my veins with its presence, hitting a place deep within my being. My eyes continue to follow her form as she strode by; time speeding up again, her back to us now, the fading of her footfalls were the only thing heard.
"What was that just now?"
I run a hand through my hair, gripping the edges, my nerves still vibrating underneath my skin. "I have no idea."
