Part 4

Christine let out a scream as she scrambled to sit up in bed. Her arms swinging to fight at the janitor that was nowhere to be seen. The sheets clung to her sweaty legs, and her heartbeat pounded in her ears.
The side of her body that had only just been scraped to pieces quivered at the memory of the resent pain. Swinging her legs over the bed, she stumbled her way to her bathroom. A good splash of cold water in her face did nothing to take away the crippling sense of shock that still rushed through her. Regardless of the evidence, that crash was not a dream. It just couldn't be.
She had no real recollection of leaving campus that night, and the memory of a broken body was still plainly prevalent in her mind. It didn't make any sense...
... But she knew exactly who would have the answers.

The next day at school, Christine didn't bother attending any classes. She spent the entire day looking for Gabe.
She checked every building, and asked every employee if they had seen the smug looking janitor with the dirty bond hair. No dice.It wasn't until 6 that she had finally plopped herself down on a plush chair in one of the study areas. Head in her hands, and nerves wound tight.
"Long day sugar?" Christine's heads snapped up at the voice. Standing just to her side was the janitor.
To his surprise, she shot up from her seat, grabbed a handful of the material of his uniform, and dragged him to the nearest empty hall. "What the hell is your deal?" She nearly shouted. Her advances aggressive enough for him to back into the wall.
It was apparent the day hadn't been kind to her.
Dark circles plumed under her eyes and her complexion was ever so slightly flushed.
Like any student the day before finals. "I don't know what-" he tried but was quickly cut off by a finger in his face. "No, don't. Don't start. What is going on with you?" She pressed.
"What's going on with me? Sweetheart, you're the one that's got me cornered. What's going on with you?" He countered.
He noticed her white knuckled fists start to tremble by her sides. "There's nothing going on with me besides whatever you are do- how are you doing all this? How'd you do all that?"

"All what?"

"Stop it!" She shouted. "You know what I'm talking about!! The gas station, the house, the crash... t-the freaking tree..." She trailed on, checking off her list.

"I know I didn't dream all that up. I know I didn't."

"Have you been taking ambien or something?"

"No!! You had something to do with this! Fess up!" She was shouting now. No doubt about to attract some unwanted attention. She watched his expression carefully as he mulled something over in his head.
His thin lips quirking until they settled into a firm line. His whisky colored eyes set stead fast in some sort of conclusion.
"You know what? Fine." He held his hands out in surrender. "You win princess. Seems I can't pull anything over your eyes." His words didn't seem genuine in the slightest.
That little grin stretched its way back on his face, and he flicked his fingers with a snap.
Christine gasped for air as she sat strait up on her couch, the school no longer around her. She was under a throw and laid out on her couch as if she had just been asleep for hours. Had her life become nothing but a series of dreams within dreams?!

"Genesis 6:2" his voice piped up. Christine watch as Gabriel made his way from her kitchen and into her living room, gazing over the trinkets on her shelves and pictures on her walls.

She just stared at him with wide, untrusting eyes.

When she didn't say anything he added, "Don't worry sugar, not a dream this time around, promise." He pulled a specific book from her shelf and dropped it onto her coffee table before moving on with his little exploration.
It was a copy of the bible. Specifically, her kKing James version she used for her theology class at school."Genesis 6:2." He said again, snapping his fingers.
Christine jumped when the book opened itself, and the pages flew before stopping on a certain page.
Cautiously, she eased over to the table to examine the page it had stopped on. "'The sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.'" She read allowed.
"What dose that mean? What the hell-"

"It means, miss 'daughter of man', that Iv got a bit of a problem."

"Ok?"

"I, being a 'son of God' find you 'fair'."

"Son of God?" She repeated.

"Yep. Mind you, it wasn't uncommon way back when, but I always thought if it were ever gonna happen to me, it'd be with someone of importance. Like a prophet or a stripper." He rambled. "But here you are."

That would have been taken as an offense if that was what Christine was focused on at the moment."Wait wait wait... 'son of God'?"

"Bingo."

"Like... ok... son of God... you mean like an angel?" She asked.

"No, not like an angel. I mean really, an angel."

"An angel?" She deadpanned. The very sound of it feeling ridiculous.

Gabriel gave an exaggerated mock guilty shrug of his shoulders. "Cats out."

Christine paused and just looked at him before standing up from her place on the couch. "Is this some sort of joke? Cuz I'm a theology major... a kinda joke? Cuz I don't actually put any stock in-"

"Oh yeah, it's a joke." He cut in sarcasticlly. "That little moped crash? Totaly a joke. And the dream visits and super stalking? Yeah. Hilarious."

"You're an angel? Really?"

"Smarter than you look."

"And you... like me?" She asked, the question sounding too stupid to say aloud.
"The whole 'saw that they were fair' thing..." Gabriel abandoned his tour of the apartment and turned his full attention to Christine.

"Unfortunately, miss Davis, I don't like you. I love you. Fell pretty damn hard too." He explained, a little too bluntly to let sink in.

Christine sat still for a solid five seconds before she waved her hands out in front of herself, as if to brush away all swarming thoughts. "Wait wait wait wait. Wait a second. Wait a god damn second. You love me? You'r an angel, and you'v fallen in actual love with me?"

"Arch angel, but yeah, that's the gist." He shrugged before plopping himself down on the recliner.

"Alright," Christine breathed in roughly through her nose, running a hand through her hair. "So, even if you are what you say you are... a-and you say you've fallen in that thing you said for me... what dose that even mean? Like what happens now?"

"Well, now you may be seeing me around a lot more often." He winked.

Christine shot him a look. "And you'r assuming I love you back? I don't even know you." She hissed, not liking where this conversation was going.

"Then would you let me take you out to dinner?"

"I don't have time for that! Or any of this! I have school and the lab and Iv come to far for any kind of distractions." Gabriel could hear the frustration rush into her tone as she began to pace around her living room, hands waving about.

"You won't even go to dinner?"

"You keep assuming I want some part in this!" She shot. "The whole 'take them as wives at which they chose' isn't going to cut it... snd marriage really better not be what your after."

"Woah, hey." He held up his hands in defense. "I'm not looking to get hitched, yet." He added in the 'yet' with a smile in his voice. "And honestly princess, this isn't exactly ideal for me either. I'm trying to lay low here and focus on staying of certain people's radar, and here you come along. But I seriously can't help it. Trust me. I would if I could." He stood and walked up to Christine, looking her in the eyes to get a clear message across.
"But I do love you Chris, and I can't just let you walk out of my life." And with that, he disappeared into thin air. A faint sound of wings beating wind came and went.
Christine didn't noticed she wasn't breathing until she dropped down on the couch, air flooding her lungs in gulps.
First price at the state fair for worst day of her life.
