I Scream
Eyeing the line, I tapped my fingers on the table. After leaving the restaurant, Zane suggested that we get ice cream at Dairy Queen. No one turned down ice cream, no matter how pissed off they were, myself included.
Zane was standing in line, his phone pressed against his ear. I offered to stand with him but he had waved his hand and asked me to find a seat.
It wasn't long before Zane wove through the tables, his fingers wrapped around the cones, and then sat across from me. As he handed my cone over, he gave me a weary smile. We seemed out of place here in our fancy clothes. The few people that sat at the tables were wearing either sweats or PJs. No one really cared how they looked during a late-night ice cream run.
"Ayreh feek? Really, Sarah?" Zane whispered with a shake of his head, a small smile dancing on his lips. On our way over to Dairy Queen, Zane hadn't said a word about the dinner. Instead, he opted to fill the silence with Yo-Yo Ma, which I didn't mind.
"What? It means beautiful in Arabic." I shrugged my shoulders. The night's events were weighing down on me. All I wanted to do was crawl into my bed and go to sleep.
"Try again," he said, giving me a pointed look. It was hard to tell whether Zane was angry about the dinner or not. His eyes revealed very little when it came to his emotions.
I rolled my eyes. "What? Don't tell me that you also speak Arabic?"
He shook his head and then squinted his eyes. "Some of my friends do. And I know for a fact that ayreh feek does not mean beautiful."
"She's the one who started it. I just finished it. What did you even say to her in Spanish?" He didn't say anything for a second, keeping his eyes set on his ice cream.
"I'll tell you but not right now," he answered, his voice soft. Perhaps he was tired or pissed off. Whatever it was, I couldn't figure it out.
Narrowing my eyes at him, I said, "Fine. Don't tell me. When did you even learn how to speak Spanish?"
He shrugged his shoulders. "I picked it up when I spent a few years in Mexico." The way he said it was strange, almost like he picked up a basketball off the ground. Four years of French in elementary school didn't do anything for me. But this guy was able to 'pick up' Spanish just by spending time around people who spoke it. Kat had mentioned something about her son spending a few years outside of Canada.
Sometimes things don't click until they are literally right in front of you.
"How long did you live in Mexico?" I asked, wanting to keep the conversation going.
He sighed. I frowned at the look he gave me, trying to figure him out.
"Oh yeah! I almost forgot." I snickered, slapping my forehead softly. "You were engaged to Fiona? What's that about?" I asked in between bites of my ice cream.
"It doesn't bother you that I didn't tell you about it?" he asked, raising his eyebrows.
Running my fingers through my hair, I thought about it. No. It didn't bother me one bit. Our relationship was strictly platonic. His past lovers were, though important to him, didn't make me feel anything. "No. Is it supposed to bother me? We're friends, right?"
"Yes, I guess," he responded, cocking his head to the side. He was trying to figure out what I was getting at.
"Sometimes friends keep things from each other. I guess this was one of those things."
To my surprise, he smiled. "You keeping things from me?" Of course, I was. Even the best of friends kept things hidden from one another. There were things Hannah refused to talk to me about.
Zane didn't need to know about how I broke up with my boyfriend of two years to make this marriage thing work or about how much I cried the day we got married. Or how afraid I was that Zane would start drinking heavily again.
Some stories Kat told me about Zane were darker than the rest. When Zane was younger and starting off as a lawyer, he liked to drink, a lot. It scared the shit out of Kat, which was enough for Zane to take it easy on the drinks.
"I'll tell you but not right now." I flicked my hair over my shoulder and smirked. "Don't try to change the subject, Hendrick. Tell me about this Fiona chick." He sat back as he carefully wiped his fingers with a napkin.
"She was a paralegal that worked with me when I first started off at the firm I work at," he said. His eyes took on a distant gleam when he mentioned Fiona. There was a history between them. "We hit it off and I asked her to marry me."
"How long were you guys together before you asked her to marry you?"
He flicked his eyes to the ceiling. "I think we were together for two months."
I whistled. "Damn, Hendrick. You move fast."
He shrugged. "We both knew what we wanted and found it in each other." Why didn't that surprise me?
"So, what happened? Did she get freaked out about the labels in your kitchen or was it the notebook?"
He chuckled and shook his head. "I think it might have been the notebook."
"I knew it!" I laughed, eyeing the line again. So much ice cream at one time was never a good idea but I was seriously considering ordering seconds. There was something else too but Zane didn't continue. He pushed away from the table as he ran his hand over his head.
Placing his hands on the chair, he leaned forward and his hazel eyes met mine. "I'm sorry for not telling you earlier about her. I was planning on telling you after dinner. I even asked the Flores not to bring up Fiona tonight." But that didn't work. Maria had other plans for the evening.
"It's not a big deal, Hendrick. Trust me," I whispered, dragging my gaze away from him. "Why didn't you tell Kat about the engagement?"
He let out a heavy breath. "It was over before I could. The engagement lasted three days," he said. Pushing away from the chair, he grinned. "I'm sorry about tonight, especially Maria. Let's get out of here. You're probably tired." And I was tired. He guided me outside but not before grabbing another ice cream cone for me.
When I was a kid, I used to pretend that the characters in my books were real people. It wasn't hard to do when there was no one to play with. Up until tonight, I thought I was another character in Zane's story. But the way he spoke and treated me tonight didn't make me feel like a character in his story.
