Chapter 13

"A dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world."
- Oscar Wilde
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Adele is laid staring at the wall. Her whole body is trembling. She was at the hospital for hours until Officer Payne brought her back. He offered to have a policewoman stay with her but she refused, saying she just wanted to be alone. He told her he'd call on her in a few days time and I'm glad.
I do want her all to myself... But I know deep down that if she's isolated this could happen again. It's not fair of me. It's not like we could ever be together. This whole thing benefits me more than her.
I glide across the dark room towards her, standing over the bed. Mr T gently pushes his face into hers but she doesn't respond.
Somehow this is scaring me more.
Carefully I lie on the bed beside her, looking at her. Bruises are beginning to bloom across her face. Suddenly she snaps and begins to cry, sobbing breathlessly.
I don't know what to do to comfort her. I try and make her feel warm but she doesn't respond at all.
Sod it. Harry can tell me off all he wants but I've got a few of my own things to say to him.
I still can't believe he stopped me helping her. He's not going to stop me comforting her at least.
Slowly I create a little orb of gold light and send it towards her, as if that's suppose to make everything ok, but at least she knows she's not alone.
I hear her breathless gasp.
"Oh my god..."
Not quite love
She shakily raises her hand to touch it and her stares in wonder.
"Who are you?" She looks around. Her face is still wet with tears but she's distracted now.
"I'm crazy." She whispers. "It's the shock... It must be..."
I laugh quietly.
Suddenly I'm overtaken by a strange sensation. Its so odd, it feels like I'm getting heavier. A tingle starts, somewhere deep inside me and it spreads slowly throughout my body.
I'm trying to work out what the hell is going on when a piercing scream jolts me out of my thoughts.
Adele leaps off the bed and stares down at the place where I'm laid. Her face is blanched and she's staring in shock.
"Oh my god! You're... You're real..." She whispers. "You're really here..."
I stare at her in confusion.
As I sit up she gasps, her eyes following my movement. What on earth is going on?
I turn back to look at her and that's when I see it.
In the mirror next to her bed I can see Adele's back and next to her, staring straight back at me, I can see...
Me.
I stare at myself in shock. I give myself a little wave and laugh when my reflection waves back.
Adele is watching me warily.
She can see me.
"I'm dreaming aren't I?" She whispers, staring at me.
I shake my head and shuffle back a bit and her eyes follow my movement.
"Are you... Are you a ghost?"
Well obviously...
I resist the temptation to say it out loud. Just.
She's staring at me, waiting for my answer and I nod slowly. I can't describe this feeling... Adele is talking to me, she's looking at me. It's insane.
"You.. You're not bad..." It's half questioning and I shake my head again, gently raising my hands in surrender.
Adele stares at me. I can see that she's trying to work out if she's imagining me or if she should just run now.
"What's your name?" She whispers suddenly. I'm surprised at the question but I answer quickly.
Louis
She shakes her head gently, frowning and I realise she can't hear me. I try saying it louder but she still can't hear. I realise that I'm using all my energy in being visible.. I can't make myself heard too.
I look round and suddenly have an idea.
I focus on the mirror and golden letters appear on it, spelling out my name. I point to it and she turns around. Her eyes widen in shock as she spots the word.
"Lewis?" She whispers.
I roll my eyes and quickly change the spelling to 'Louie'
"Louis..." She says it properly and turns back to me with a smile. "Louis."
I smile at the sound of my name on her lips. She stares at me for a long minute.
"You're a ghost. I'm talking to a ghost. There is a ghost in my bed." She mutters to herself. She keeps looking away and glancing back at me, as if I suddenly won't be there. I can see she's still torn between running away and staying in the room.
At that minute Mr T decides to do me a favour, for once, and he struts over to where I'm sat and curls into me, purring softly. Adele watches him carefully and something about this causes her to soften slightly.
"What are you doing here?" She looks at me then flushes slightly and looks away.
I shrug.
Your guess is as good as mine Adele
"How long have you been here?" Something in her voice causes me to pause. It's as if she's sorry for me, as if she understands how lonely I am.
I point back towards the mirror and an image appears, a memory of mine. I didn't even realise how easy it was to project my thoughts until now.
I'm holding a newspaper, the London Gazette. The front cover is dominated by the death of William III. It's the last really clear memory I have, I'm not sure how long after this I died. I focus on the date at the top and the image in the mirror zooms in on it.
8th March 1702
"1702?!" Adele whispers, shocked. "That's more than 300 years ago!"
Yeah. Just wait until I tell you about the annoying archangel who visits me. Oh, and my best friend who's also haunting your house.
She's quiet for a second.
"I'm either dreaming or crazy." She says suddenly.
I shake my head quickly and she looks at me with a shy smile.
"You've been looking after me, haven't you?" She says quietly.
I shrug, it's my turn to feel shy now.
"Thank you." She looks down, and I can tell she's thinking about Derrick. I point to the mirror and show her, I show her that I did try to help.
She's quiet for a second after watching my memory of what happened earlier tonight. I can see the shine of tears in her eyes.
"I was so stupid." She mutters. I shake my head.
It's not your fault.
"He won't come back will he?" She sounds afraid.
No. But even if he does, I'm here. I'll protect you this time.
She can't hear me but she seems to understand what I've said and the tension in her shoulders relaxes slightly.
She faces me fully and we look at each other, drinking in every detail of each other's faces. Seconds, minutes, pass as we look at each other. Her eyes are beautiful, deep blue with a hint of green. I smile at her and suddenly she looks down at the bed, blushing with a small smile on her lips. I feel a twinge in my chest.
"I knew you were here! Everyone said I was crazy, but I knew. I can feel you sometimes. Are you always here?" She pauses as I nod. "Oh god! You haven't seen me naked have you?" She blurts suddenly. I shake my head violently, shocked that she'd even imagine that I spend my time perving on her.
She blushes furiously, and I smile at how embarrassed she is.
"Show me more." She says eventually. I'm confused until she points to the mirror again.
So I show her. I show her the house, the way it was when I was alive, Niall... Every question that she asks I find a memory to show her. It's odd, she does all the talking as we walk through my memories.
"Have you ever appeared to anyone else who lived here?"
I shake my head.
"Why me? Are you stuck here? Do you need help?"
I shake my head to her questions. I wish I could speak to her.
I want tonight to last forever. She's sat closer to me now, completely unafraid.
"This is crazy." She whispers after a while.
I glance at her and she peeks up at me then smiles shyly.
"I mean... I'm probably dreaming, right?"
I shake my head again and she looks at me for a minute.
"I like it that you're here." She says finally. "I can't be lonely if you're here."
I smile at her.
"Is that what happens when you die? You stay in the same place?"
No.
I think about how I can explain it too her and she watches me expectantly.
Finally I have an idea. I'll show her the image of Harry, if she understands that he's an angel then maybe she'll understand that there's more than being a ghost.
I focus hard on the mirror. Harry's face comes slowly into view.
Suddenly there's an almighty cracking noise. The room seems to shake, as if something had finally broken through, and the mirror splits in two pieces.
I already know what's happening.
I feel myself beginning to fade as I desperately fight against it.
"Louis?" Adele's panicked blue eyes focus on mine. "Don't go!"
I watch in the mirror as the image of me completely fades away.
Bollocks.
I roll my eyes.
Ok Harry, I shouldn't have tried to show her your image  I guess....
That was a little dramatic though, don't you think?
"Are... Are you still here Louis?" Adele whispers.
Her worried frown turns to a shy smile as I create a little orb of light.
"Good. Stay with me...Don't leave."
I won't Adele. Not ever.
