Chapter 6
"Because what's worse that knowing that you want something besides knowing that you can never have it?"
- James Patterson

It's been six weeks since Harry's visit and I've done as he asked, almost. I still make sure that everything is where Adele needs it and, just occasionally, I make the room a little warmer for her or add a little sparkle to the sunlight coming through the windows on a morning.
It's hard though as she keeps timidly talking to me. She says that she knows I mean her no harm, could I just prove that she's not crazy? Just give her some little sign?
And I want to. So desperately. Adele doesn't seem afraid of me and I want to interact with her more than I've ever wanted anything.
Something about Harry's warning is stopping me though. He wouldn't tell me not to if there wasn't some bigger reason, he's never stopped me helping anyone before. I just wish I could work it out.
I'm sat in front of the mirror. I haven't been able to appear in it since that night and believe me, I've tried.
It was amazing to see my face. I'd actually forgotten what I looked like and I want to see it again.
Mr T wanders past and I studiously ignore him. We haven't spoken since that night. I would have forgiven him but I can't, it's his fault that Derrick is here all the time now, bringing Adele little presents and popping round for cups of tea. She loves it of course. Why wouldn't she? He's so bloody charming.
Mr T sits purposely close to me, his back towards me and tail flicking, letting me know that he's not talking to me either.
You'd think that three centuries of immortal life would lead to something more fulfilling than arguing with a cat.
I sigh and stand up, making my way to the bedroom.
Adele is getting ready to go out. She's wearing a black dress that I personally think is a little short but she seems happy enough so I watch as she puts on her make up then pouts, seemly unhappy with her reflection.
You look beautiful. Never think that you're not beautiful Adele.
The front door opens and I realise with a pang that she's getting dressed up like this for him, Derrick.
"Adele? Are you ready darling?"
I grimace at the word but Adele smiles brightly and runs down the stairs towards him.
"You look beautiful." He smiles and kisses her cheek.
Yeah, I already told her that pal.
He takes her arm and leads her away from me, into the night where I can't follow.
~~~~
She's been gone hours. It's so boring when she's not here.
Finally the front door clicks open and I can hear her giggling.
Derricks voice is soft and even though I don't want to put myself through it, I make myself appear in the hall.
"Tonight was wonderful Adele."
She blushes and her eyes are sparkling. She looks so beautiful in that moment it makes my heart ache, I want to reach out and touch her, stroke her soft hair.
Derrick grins down at her, full of confidence and she looks awkward, unsure of herself.
He begins to lean towards her, his hands pulling her waist into him.
As they kiss, just a few feet from where I'm stood, I feel a strange emotion. It feels heavy in my chest.
I'm jealous.
She's mine, he shouldn't be touching her.
He groans into the kiss, his hands running along her body, tracing her waist and moving towards her breast and that's it.
I appear in the little back bedroom, even though I can still hear them giggling at least I can't see it here.
I curl up in a ball. For the first time in 300 years I wish I could cry, relive this aching lump of tension in my chest.
I need someone to comfort me. I've spend the last three centuries trying to comfort others but tonight I just need a friend.
I've never, ever, felt so alone.
Harry?
I whisper his name.
Haz... Please. I can't- please Harry, you told me that you're always watching me, I need a friend. I need someone who cares more than I've ever needed anything before.
I wait.
I need to know that just one person in the whole universe cares about me. I've never asked you for anything!
I wait but he doesn't come.
Please Harry! I've done what you asked! Just come and sit with me a while! I need a friend, I'm begging you!
I'm shouting now and I don't care if she hears.
No one comes. And it hits me.
No one cares.
I must be the loneliest creature in the world. Even Adele could reach out to another human if she needed too.
I have no one. Not one other soul.
No one even knows I exist, the few beings that do know are so wrapped up in my role in their divine plan that they just don't care.
I slump to the floor, head in hands. There's a scratching sound from behind me and the door opens slightly.
Mr T makes his way into the room and slowly walks towards me, purring softly. He must have known I was upset, he's come. He curls into me and I wrap myself around him.
I bend my head as I stroke him, he purrs gently and I know he's trying to comfort me.
A tear falls from my eyes and hits his soft fur.
I'm not supposed to be able to cry.
But I don't care, I don't even wonder why or how.
All I focus on is the gentle humming from Mr T as he tries to softly drown out the noises from Derrick and Adele.
