Chapter 43

A group of troopers ran down a catwalk as gunfire erupted around. "It's hot down there Kilo Two Three, abort!" A man said in his comms.

"Run, run, hurry!" Reinhardt shouted as he held his shield up to block the oncoming enemy fire. "I guess he's not here either." Ana said. Reaper turned as he fired his weapons at the enemy operatives as him, Reinhardt, Ana, Tracer, and Lucio entered the waiting dropship. The ship flew into the air and departed.

"All heads accounted for." Tracer answered. "Good, we'll meet you back at base." Charles replied. He sighed as he swiveled his way and faced Lawson who was fuming.

"Why did you pull them out!?" He demanded. "Do you want them to die?" Charles asked. Lawson glanced at Charles before sighing.

"It was all under control before you stepped in." He snapped. Charles straightened in his chair as his irises grew Hellfire red.

"These are my people. I made the retreat because they were outnumbered 50 to 5. Do you see OverWatch as this tank that sustains no damage? They are still people." Charles replied.

"This may be your operation, but they are my family." He said before Lawson scoffed. "Don't pull the 'family' card, you merely grew up with them. You're just lucky your parents were agents." He retorted. Charles stood up fast from his chair as he glared at the Unit's Commander. Lawson glared at him as an inaudible battle raged between the two commanders. Angela and Aaron walked over as they both separated the two commanders.

"Commander, calm down!" Aaron said holding his superior's shoulders. "That damn kid, thinking he's so special because of that damned hellspawn. Always pulling the family card." Lawson growled.

"On the contray sir, he did become and an agent when his parents went missing. He has also know them longer than we ever did, and we went on missions with them." Aaron pointed out. Lawson glanced at him.

"Who's side are you on?" He demanded. "No one's, this whole battle between you two is annoying as it is irrelevant to the task at hand. We need to find Zeljan and bring him to justice or else he will disappear from the radar again." Aaron replied. Lawson glared at his subordinate before sighing.

"Fine, did you find anything else about his whereabouts?" He asked. "While you two were at each other's throats, we did." Atticus said. Lawson and Aaron walked over as Grief typed away on his terminal.

"So?" Lawson asked. "Well, we found a Talon base, thanks to Gabriel and hacked into the cameras before Sombra took them out." Atticus replied as a video showed Zeljan, the two female warriors and a few grunts enter. Sombra looked at the camera and smirked as she fired a burst from her SMG, destroying it.

"I'm gonna guess and say, Zeljan may have gone rogue from Talon and is bribing the higher ups with money to cover it up." Atticus finished as he twirled and faced the two. Aaron reviewed the tape as Lawson formulated a plan.

"I'll send you and Barnes to recon the area. But keep it silent, no one must know." He ordered them. Aaron nodded as he turned and left to find Chloe.

"Sir, why are we not informing Commander Charles?" Atticus asked. "Because, it's time to show him the Unit in action. Not simple stories his parents told him." Lawson said as a smirk appeared on his face. Atticus nodded as he turned to his computer and typed away. Lawson turned to the entrance to see Dimitri tossing a knife in the air before snatching the handle and sheathing it.

"You didn't get the band together to leave one of us out now, did you?" He asked with a smile. "I forgot, you can't stay still when there could be a battle that you could be in. Speaking of battles, how is the war in Russia so far?" Lawson asked. Zarya stepped into view as her particle cannon was strapped to her back.

"We've pushed the Omnics farther back and destroyed several key Omniums. After dealing with them, me and Dimitri decided to join the reformed Overwatch." She said. Lawson walked over and shook her hand.

"Great to have you aboard Ms. Zaryanova." Lawson said with a smile. The Russian nodded as she turned and left to talk with everyone else. Aaron and Chloe entered as they stood at attention.

"This mission and everyone here is under wraps, not a peep to Commander Charles and anyone else. Eyes and ears here only." Lawson said as the door closed. He walked to a terminal and inputted codes that blocked Athena from listening in.

"Thanks to Atticus, we've found out where Zeljan will be." He said pulling up a map of the area. He inserted a chip before a head appeared.

"Ah, hello there Gideon." Lawson said. "Good afternoon, Mr. Lawson. Good afternoon, Aaron, Dimitri, Atticus, Chloe." She replied. Aaron and Chloe walked over as Dimitri and Atticus's mouths were agape.

"Since when did you get your hands on an AI?" Aaron asked. "I won her in a game of Blackjack with the Admiral of the Navy." Lawson said with a grin. Atticus walked over to Gideon as he awed the AI.

"I've seen the God AIs, but I've never been this close to one." He said as he marveled the ingenuity of human engineering.

"Now then, enough gawking Mr. Atticus. Gideon, will you please triangulate the position of where Mr. Kurst may be hiding out at?" Lawson asked.

"Certainly, it appears Mr. Kurst is hiding out in the plains of North America." She replied. "America? Of all places he could be hiding out it would be in the middle of the country where he and the organization he may be apart of are wanted. Why there?" Lawson asked.

"Because, that is where you want to surprise your enemies." A voice said. "I thought you locked the door Aaron." Lawson hissed as he turned to see Gabriel standing in the doorway. He uncrossed his arms as he entered the room, a scowl on his face.

"I've been meaning to get my hands on Zeljan ever since he joined Talon." Reyes said. "Glad to see you're on board Reaper." Aaron said. Gabriel snapped at Aaron, making the weaponsmith stiffen. He stalked over to him and sized up the man.

"Don't refer me to that name ever again." He threatened. Aaron nodded profusely as sweat dripped down his forehead. Gabriel turned and stood in front of Lawson as the Commander had a stoic look on his face.

"Well, let's proceed now shall we?" Lawson asked as his pulled Gideon's chip from the console. The doors unlocked as Athena returned back to normal as if nothing happened. Lawson nodded to the group as the filed out.

"Barnes, Manhattan, you take the small dropship and recon the area." Lawson said. "Roger sir, we already got everything on board. Just waitin' on the signal." Aaron said as the two turned and left.

"Grief, Apollo, Reyes, while they are out you will be waiting in a dropship to provide back up." Lawson said. The three nodded as they left until Charles rolled by. He glanced at Lawson before continuing on his way. He continued until his comms came to life.

'Commander, we're in.' Barnes said. Lawson entered a room as he closed the door. "I hear you, what's their defense like?" He asked.

'About, 15 guards posted around the perimeter, a run down shack but I'm guessing an underground base like in the Sahara.' Barnes replied. Lawson cursed under his breath as he sighed.

"Alright, I'm enacting Legends Protocol. Move in and secure the package." Lawson said. 'Understood sir.' Aaron replied.

"Apollo, Grief, Reaper, we're Oscar Mike." Lawson said. 'Understood, we're moving out.' Atticus replied. Lawson made his way back to the command center, he noticed Charles, Winston, and Ana waiting for him.

"Did you happen to allow two of our dropships to leave, Commander Lawson?" Winston asked. "Yes, I did." Lawson replied.

"Why?" Ana asked. "That is classified information." Lawson said, causing the older woman to scowl.

"The lady asked you a question." Charles said. During the week, Charles had slowly began to heal thanks to the help of the Rider and Angela's therapy he could breathe easier and walk, but only for a few steps. After a while, he needed to rest. But Charles was not in a gaming mood.

"Where did you send those ships?" Charles demanded. "I'll asked that the gorilla and washed out 2nd-in-command need to leave the room. Commander's only." He replied. Ana and Winston snarled before leaving. Charles stood up and grabbed Lawson by the shoulder, pinning him to the wall.

"What. Did. You. Do?" He growled. "I've found where Zeljan is and my team is deployed to find them and secure Zeljan." Lawson said, glaring back at Charles. He was released from his grasp as Lawson fixed his shirt.

"Why didn't you say anything?" Charles demanded. "Because this is exactly how you'd react, you'd run headlong into danger." Lawson retorted.

"He tortured me!" Charles rebuttaled. "And he will destroy the world if you went after him! Don't you see? You're not thinking straight. Just because you have the Ghost Rider doesn't make you immortal. It still makes you human, a very durable human but a human nonetheless. Don't you see Charlie, just because you have powers, it doesn't make you God." Lawson said. He walked over and grabbed his shoulders as he looked into his eyes.

"You're Charles Williams, Strike Commander of Overwatch and the Ghost Rider. You're not a tank for the team, you're their leader. Now start acting like it." He said slapping Charles's cheek lightly. Charles looked at Lawson before frowning.

"I have this hellish partner, yet I feel as if I have a burden on my shoulders. Like, everyone expects me to be this powerful badass, but I still feel like my younger self, still afraid of this power and what I could do." He replied. Charles sat back down on his wheelchair as doubt fluttered through his mind.

"No one expects you of this Charles, really. You're a soldier with a promising future. You have wonderful friends, family, and you yourself are amazing. Never doubt yourself, always strive to improve and better yourself instead of letting your doubt cloud your judgement. Trust me, it happened to me when Julie and David were lost those many years ago." Lawson said. Charles looked up at the Commander as he smiled.

"I guess you're right. Now, what about Zeljan's hideout?" He asked rolling to the console. "Well, my team should be gathering data and formulating a plan. I've enacted Legends Protocol in case of an event such as this." Lawson said.

"Legends Protocol?" Charles asked. "They recon then assess their choices. Once a plan has been formulated, they execute." He replied.

'Commander, we've taken out the guards, proceeding with main objective.' Manhattan reported.

"Understood." Lawson replied.

~The Unit~

As the main guards laid down either dead or unconscious, the team moved through the plains as fast as a snake. They were a shadow, working together to silence anyone within the base's parameters.

Barnes glanced at the team as she made signals for everyone to split up. The team acknowledged as they fanned out. Aaron ran through the grass as his M4 rested in his hands. He felt his leg buckle before it straighten. He remembered scoping out a suspected Badge hideout as he assessed their strengths and weakness.

'I missed working with a team.' He thought as he stopped a few feet in front of the run down shack.

'I have eyes on the shack, Athena, can you do a geological scan of the surrounding area?' He asked the AI.

'Certainly, it appears to be an underground base like in the Sahara.' She reported. The group rendezvous around the shack as Aaron nodded to Barnes. She crept to the entrance and opened as a hatch appeared on the bottom, closed. Barnes pulled out a small machine and placed it on the hatch.

"Athena, can you hack this?" She asked. 'Certainly.' The AI replied. The group waited before the machine flash green as the hatch opened. Barnes jumped in, her boots clattering on the tile floor. The rest followed suite as Barnes covered their entrance. The group moved, covering ground as one took out a guard with every room they passed. As they approached the main hub, Barnes pulled out an old six shooter.

"Ready?" She asked. The group nodded as Barnes stood up and kicked the door open as she fired shots into nearby enemies. Aaron pulled out the Seasons as he fired a torrent of shotgun shells that embedded themselves into any grunt that carelessly stood in the way. Zeljan, Sombra, and Widowmaker turned before diving into cover.

"Why do you still use that?" Grief asked. "Makes me feel normal." Barnes replied. Grief rolled his eyes as he rolled to the left and fired his gun at a couple grunts. Sombra turned invisible and vaulted over her cover and ran forward. She released a low powered EMP pulse, cutting out communications with Lawson.

"Damnit, comms are out!" Apollo shouted as he placed his brass knuckles on and punched any grunt who stood in his way.

"Comms aren't the only ones out." Aaron said as he pulled out his pulse rifle, only for it to click. He scowled before dropping the rifle and pulling out the Patriot as he slammed in a new magazine and fired at Sombra as the hacker ran forward and threw a translocator behind him. She disappeared as she reappeared behind him and subdued him before whispering in his ear.

"We are not your enemies. We share the same one." She said. "Yeah, Talon, and you're apart of it." Aaron snapped back.

"No, me and Widow plan to desert Zeljan and the rest of Talon. We'll be willing to give information on the others but only if we are allowed to slip past undetected." Sombra bartered. Aaron glared at her before squirming from her grasp. The two crouched as the gunfire continued.

"Your equipment will reboot, but trust me on this." Sombra pleaded. To prove her point, she pushed him down as she fired at a grunt that stumbled upon them.

"Fine, but stick with me. You stay on my ass so my team don't kill you." Aaron said. The hacker rolled her eyes before nodding. As the last of the grunts perished, the Unit surrounded Zeljan and Widowmaker.

"Zeljan Kurst, you are under arrest for multiple counts of murder and a war criminal." Barnes said. Zeljan raised his hands before smirking. A click was heard behind the leader as she sighed.

"You fuck." She said dropping her weapon. The rest followed as Sombra appeared with her SMG and smirked.

"You tried, I'll give you that. But not hard enough." Zeljan said as he laughed lightly. Aaron shot a glance at Sombra as the woman winked.

"So, Mr. Kurst. What are we to do with this lot?" She asked. "This lot, has been a thorn in my side long enough. The legendary fabled Unit." He replied.

"The Unit? You mean the squad the UN used to have?" Sombra asked. "Yes, but I'm sure you'd know why. Well, you're a hacker." Zeljan said.

"But a little birdy told me the band got together. Thanks to Commander Charles, you, Mahattan. Or should I refer you by your alias, the Arsenal?" Zeljan asked.

"The Arsenal? You're telling me this man is the 'Arsenal'?" Sombra asked shoving her SMG into Aaron's shoulder.

"You didn't know? I'm surprised that has you stumped, considering you're an elite hacker." Zeljan said. Sombra gritted her teeth as Zeljan continued.

"He's the reason our mates in the Black Badge couldn't stay on par with their deliveries." Zeljan said.

"This man is the reason Talon couldn't have what it wanted. But, I'm so glad to see you all here." Zeljan said. Apollo growled as Grief formulated a plan. Barnes's eyes flickered to Widowmaker as she held a pistol in her hand. She locked eyes with her as Barnes realized she was frightened.

'Weird, an elite assassin frightened?' She wondered. Aaron glanced behind him as Sombra mouthed the word 'one' she aimed her SMG at Zeljan and fired a burst. A bullet pierced his leg as he stumbled. Widowmaker backed off, dropping the pistol as she hid behind Grief. The Russian walked over and punched his face, knocking him out. He hefted the knocked out criminal over his shoulder as he sighed.

"Our deal is still on, right?" Sombra asked Aaron. "Down to the letter, have a good life. Sombra." Aaron said as he held his hand out. She grabbed his hand and shook before hugging him.

"Thank you." She said before separating and turning to Widow. "Let's go Arana. Our new life awaits." She said with a smile. The purple assassin turned to the Unit with a grateful smile.

"Thank you, Vous tous." She said. Aaron nodded as the two turned and left. "I don't like it." Barnes said.

"What, you don't like the fact that Amelie may be back. After all these years?" Atticus asked. Chloe watched as the they disappeared.

"I guess, I'm just not ready to accept the fact the assassin of Talon is now her former self." Barnes said before leaving for the hatch. The Unit followed close behind as the exited the base. Barnes, Apollo, Zeljan, and Grief stood out the door as Manhattan came back and heaved himself out of the hatch.

"Let's move." Barnes ordered as the rest left for the hill. Barnes comm came to life as Lawson came through.

'Barnes, Barnes, do you copy?' He asked. "Loud and clear Commander. We'll be needing a ride out." She replied.

'Look in the air.' A man replied. The group looked up to see an Overwatch dropship with it's ramp lowered and Charles standing over, wearing a black leather jacket, brown khakis pants, boots and black gloves. The ship landed as he walked over and smiled.

"Glad you could make it." He said. Apollo walked in as he dropped Zeljan on the floor and tied his hands together.

"Glad you could make it, but you missed all the fun." Aaron said patting his back. "Oh rubbish!" A voice said, making Aaron turn to see Lena with her hands on her hips and a smirk on her face. She walked over and planted a kiss on his lips before punching him in the stomach.

"That, was for running out on a covert mission WITHOUT telling me." Lena scolded. Aaron smiled as he laughed lightly. The rest of the Unit boarded as the ship lifted into the air.

"Wanna see something?" Aaron asked Dimitri. The two looked out the window as Aaron raised a detonator and squeezed. The area of the shack exploded into fire and molten lead as the base put on a show of fire.

"Wow." Dimitri said. The rest of the agents watched as the the explosion expanded before slowing down. The ship returned to base as Dimitri hefted the unconscious criminal and walking to the prison. The rest of the agents and Unit left the hangar bay and left for either their rooms or the mess. Charles walked to the prison room as Dimitri nodded. He opened the door and walked to Zeljan's cell.

"Ah, good afternoon Mr. Williams. To what do I owe the pleasure?" He asked. Charles gulped as he glared at the criminal.

"Come to gawk or kill me? Either way, you're boring me." Zeljan complained. "I've been wondering, why didn't you kill me?" Charles asked.

"Because, we wouldn't have this lovely conversation now would we." Zeljan replied. Charles smirked as he walked from one area to the next.

"I do want to ask, where is the rest of the Talon leaders?" Charles asked. "Somewhere, lost to the winds." Zeljan said.

"Cryptic bastard aren't you." Charles replied. "Maybe, but I could careless about that damn group. They were going to ice me anyways. I could tell they couldn't trust me." Zeljan said.

"Can't imagine why." Charles retorted. "You're enjoying this, aren't you?" Zeljan asked. "Maybe, but I'll leave you to your thoughts. Since that's what sociopaths do." Charles replied as he left. The door closed the door as Charles cheered silently. Angela stood in front of him as she smirked.

"Having fun Commander?" She asked. Charles looked at her and walked over as he wrapped his arms around her waist.

"So, what now? Talon is in crumbles, the Black Badge is thinning, and Overwatch is back. What do we do now?" Charles asked.

"Now, we train the next generation." Angela said holding up a small machine that had a plus sign on it.

"Wait, do this mean?" Charles asked. "Yup, you're not only a Commander, but also a father." She whispered. Charles's eyes widened as he lifted Angela off the ground and twirled her in the air, laughing. He placed her on the ground and kissed her.

"I guess now is the time I ask you something." He said kneeling down. "Angela Ziegler, you've made my heart beat erratically ever since I was a wee boy. I've loved you ever since that day, even when I joined Overwatch. You were the one that captured my heart and never let go. I want to ask, will you marry me and keep that heart?" He asked. Anglea held a hand to her mouth as she gasped before tears fell down her face.

"Oh gott, yes Charlie. Yes!" She said as Charles placed a silver band ring with a small diamond encrusted. He placed it on her ring finger and rose to embrace her. She kissed him before parting for breath.

"Well, ready for the rest of our live, Ms. Williams?" He asked. "Certainly, Mr. Ziegler." She replied and kissed him again.
