Chapter 14

((😱😱😱 OMG GLITCHED WAS AT 73 IN SCI FI!!!!!!

WHAAAAAA????
WHAAAAAA?!?!?!!!??  Excuse me as I question how the heck this happened

381's POV))

The room they assembled us Viruses in was large and had large signs with peeled and worn off letters. It was hard to read what they said. But the strange thing about the room we were in, was there was small rooms built into the walls. I couldn't guess what those mini rooms were for, but they looked small and cramped. As I walked in, I tried to find an open space to stand. It was so crowded, and everyone was packed in, leaving little space. I bumped into 791, who almost fell over.

"Hey!" she said and spun around.

"Didn't mean to bump into you 791, it was an accident.  Sorry." I said, facing her.

791 ((Aka mysterygirl7913)) sighed, and shook her head. "It's alright, accidents happen." she said and rebalanced herself. She pulled a piece of dark brown hair back behind her ear.

"Do you know why we're here?" she asked me.

I shook my head. I didn't know, and I wanted to. Chris barely explained anything, he just injected me with something and then left. Suddenly, a man walked on top of a table and clapped his hands loudly.  The room fell silent and we all turned to the dark skinned and dark haired man.  He cleared his throat and licked his lips.

"Excuse me, but can I have everyone's attention?" He said, putting his hands behind his back. "Hello, my name is Reggie, I am the assigned leader of this establishment.  I understand that you must all be very confused, after all, we did take you from your horrible home in the middle of the night without telling you why.  But hear me out, we did it for your own good.  Back in the New World, you were treated as lab rats, as nothing but defaulted experiments.  In all honesty, there's no way they can... 'cure' you.  There is no curing you.  You're chipless, and will forever remain chipless."

Gasps were heard from all around the room.  There is no curing you.  You're chipless, and will forever remain chipless...  791 stiffened at his words.  I could tell she was disappointed by what the man-Reggie-had told us, most Viruses were.  This man was telling us that everything that we had hoped for-freedom, a cure, a chance to be normal-was never coming true.  We would be Viruses forever.  The disappointment and shock from my fellow Viruses turned to disbelief, hate, and anger.

"That's not true!  You're not telling the truth!  We are curable!   We are!  We'll be given our chips back, and we will become citizens!  But then you took us away and now we might never get back and never become citizens!" a voice I recognized as 256's screamed, causing an uproar of angry shouting.  The silent room became loud and voices echoed and bounced off the walls.  Groaning, I plugged my ears to block the noise.  I wished I was out of this chaotic and loud room, I wished I was somewhere quiet and peaceful and not cramped, with a pen in my hand and a paper in my lap.  I wanted to go back the the quiet and just draw.

"Can everyone please be quiet!" Reggie shouted angrily and stomped his foot.

The room fell silent once more.  But the anger and the tension silently buzzed through the air.

"I know this isn't what you want to hear, but it's more truthful than telling you that you're going to become a citizen-with a chip.  Viruses like yourselves have been around for more thousands of years, and they haven't been cured.  The technology and science in the New World is still the same as ever-so if they weren't able to cure the thousands of Viruses before you, how can they possibly cure you all?" he asked, making eye contact with every single one of us.  When his dark eyes landed on mine, I stared at him, questioning him-trying to find out his motive.  And for a moment, I thought I saw Reggie smiling all-knowingly at me.  But when I blinked, he wasn't smiling and was already looking at someone else.  Did I really see that?

"Now I didn't come here to argue about chips and break your spirits, but that needed to be said.  That needed to get out of the way before I started talking about the real reason you are all here." He took a deep breath, and then exhaled.

"This, is the Old World-well, what remains of it.  We are a small society of chipless people, who have lived under the radar of the New World citizens since the very beginning of the New World.  We have stayed hidden, never making contact with the New World, since it would be too risky.  We had no interest in interacting with the New World, just to survive peacefully.   Until we learned about Viruses.  We didn't know you existed until a few months ago, when our technology expert, Elana ((Aka OhShitWudUp)), accidently hacked one of the computers in the New World, that obtained information about you."

Hacked?  What does that even mean?  I looked around the room, Viruses casted confused looks at each other.  The anger and tension had turned once more back into confusion.

"Once we found out that the New World had imperfections, people who the chips would not correspond with, we knew we had to save you from the caged world you lived in.  We knew they could not cure you, and they would never free you-not until they found a cure.  We knew you'd sit and rot in that dark lab, never getting a chance to live a life.  And so, we made it our mission to save you from your dull lives, and give you a chance to live a life as an Old World citizen."  He gave us a warm smile.

"Here in the Old World, we offer choices, freedom, a chance to be yourself-not someone society made you to be.  We have plenty of food and water, and we offer a place to sleep.  Now it might not be as pretty, as comfortable, as sanitary, or as high tech as the New World, but we have trust, family, and security here.  You don't have to hide in a lab anymore.  But for those of you who don't want to be here and want to go back to the New World, I beg of you, give this place a chance.  Spend two days here, and if you like it, you may stay, and if you don't, we will escort you back to the New World. "

A chance to be yourself-not somebody society made you to be...  It was like Reggie knew how I thought.  But I still didn't completely trust him, but the hope of being myself-and free-was far too pleasing for me to deny.

"Sir, sir!" a woman in all black with olive skin, and dark brown thin hair pushed through the crowed, and ran up Reggie, breaking the silence. She looked panicked, and in a rush.

"What Amaliea? What is wrong?" he hissed at her.

Amaliea straightened up and whispered something into Reggie's ear. His eyes widened, and his hands turned to clenched fists. He turned to Amaliea.

"What? Are you sure?" he asked, worry in his voice.

Amaliea nodded, a kind of rushed nod. The man bit his lip, and then turned to us.

"I must leave, you may all do as you please as of now."

And with that Reggie and the woman ran out of the room in a hurry, leaving us Viruses alone, and confused.  I glanced around, not knowing what to do.  The Old World sounded too good to be true, and I still didn't 100% trust Reggie.  I had a million questions about the Old World, and why they wanted to free us.  But my questions, doubts, and worries were drowned out by one word that kept bouncing around in my ears, that made me excited and hopeful for the first time.  Free.  Free to do whatever I wanted, free to be whoever I wanted, free to say whatever I wanted.  Free.  I smiled, and I was positive I was the only Virus smiling.  But I didn't care.
