Chapter 22

((Laila's POV))

I don't think I got any sleep that night. I tried and I tried and I tried, but I couldn't. My thoughts were nonstop and the feeling of intense Worry wouldn't go away. I don't think it was Worry anymore.  No, what I was 'feeling', it was something much more.  It was Fear.  I was up when the darkness of the night was replaced with the bright sunshine of the morning. I just laid there on my old, dirty bed, arms hugging myself.

And for the first time in my entire life, I didn't want to leave my room and be productive. I wanted to stay where I was and stay away from everyone outside who I could easily Anger. The Viruses and the people of the Old World were all chipless, they could get Angry, they could cause someone pain.

But so could I. And I think that was what Worried me most. That I could become Angry and I could cause someone pain. I didn't want to do that. What were things that I didn't like that could make me Angry?

-Being chipless

-This head pain that won't go away

-No more robot guard

-No sense of time

-Not being able to identify things

-Not knowing words

My list was interrupted by a knock on my door. I sat up and turned to the doorway, and there stood 381 with timberland behind him. 381 looked Annoyed and Timberland, well, he still had his smile on. Timberland didn't seem like he could ever get Angry. He didn't get Angry when 256 slapped him, and that must've been painful. And he smiled so much, meaning he must be Happy a lot. From what I could understand, Happy and Angry seemed to be opposites.  Happiness led to good things. Anger led to bad.

"Rise and shine, Your Citizenship! We got loads of Old Worldy stuff to do today and we can't do they while lying in bed like a log! Soooooo, up up up!" Timberland said, clapping his hands, and taking a step forward.

But 381 held out his hands and turned to Timberland, shaking his head. Timberland stopped in place, not entering my room. Timberland glanced from me to 381, back to me, and he took a step back, Confused. 381 turned to me and stepped in, Timberland then following him.

"Hey, um, are you okay?" 381 asked me.

I hugged my knees to my chest and rested my chin upon them. Was I Okay? I was Worried and Confused and afraid and I didn't understand any of this.

"I don't know. I don't think I'm Okay." I mumbled.

Timberland frowned and walked over to me. He sat next to me and put his arm around me in a side hug.

"Hey, what's wrong, Lails?" he asked, turning to face me.

Lails? That's not my name... I'm Laila... Did he forget already? I heard 381 sigh and saw him do the eye roll thing again as he leaned against the wall.

"Lails?" I asked softly.

"It's your nickname. Lails. It's like... a special name." Timberland explained.

I creased my eyebrows and looked down at my feet, but then back at Timberland.

"But, isn't my name special?"

The memory of me getting my name came back and I smiled softly. Laila. It was my name. My very own name. And I thought that was pretty special.

Timberland chuckled. "Yea, your name is pretty special. But Lails is a name that only I can call you. Annnnnnd maybe 381, if he stops giving me that annoyed look every time he sees me." Timberland said, looking up at 381.

381 looked up at him, an Annoyed expression was definitely on his face. Did he not like Timberland?  Why?  Yes he took him from his home, but Timberland was a nice person. And didn't he apologize for it?  Not to mention he's going to be letting the Viruses go home by the end of the week so, he's going home anyways.  He should've forgiven him by now...  right?

But maybe he was Angry at him for taking him. Maybe he was so Angry that the Anger wouldn't let him forgive Timberland.

"I'm not giving you an annoyed look!" 381 defended and crossed his arms.

"Your stink eye says other words, Buddy." Timberland laughed.

381 pushed himself off the wall and walked over to the bed. "Don't call me that," he spoke to Timberland.

"What, Buddy?  Why not?  That can be your nickname!  Buddy!"

"No, don't you dare start calling me that!  That isn't a nickname, it's stupid!"

I turned from Timberland, who was laughing nonstop, to 381, who wasn't laughing at all.

"Do you not like it?" I asked 381.

"No, I don't like it," he narrowed his eyes at Timberland, frown twitching.

I squirmed a little bit in my seat, hugging myself tighter. Worry once again became the dominant emotion. I looked at the tips of my toes, wiggling them slightly.

"Does it make you Angry?" I asked softer, my gaze flickering up to his so I could see his expression.

He widened his eyes and started to shake his head. "No, no, it doesn't make me angry. It just bothers me. I'm not angry, just annoyed. What, now every time I get bothered by something means I'm automatically angry?"

Did my question make you Angry?

I looked down. "I don't know... Probably not... But... maybe." It takes only one thing...

Timberland glanced from me to 381 and then back to me.

"Um... did something happen that I'm not aware of? Why is she asking if you're angry? Did you do something?" Timberland asked, finally deciding to look at 381.

381 sighed and leaned against the wall, crossing his ankles. I bit my lip and looked down, shuffling backwards a bit.

"He didn't do anything," That I'm aware of...  yet.

"She learned what anger is, and it's freaking her out.  Ever since I told her about it last night she's been acting like this." 381 explained, taking a seat on the bed.

Timberland turned to me and leaned away.  It was odd not seeing his usual smile, and I had only known him for a day.  I hoped he was usually Happy, and yesterday I just got the wrong impression of him.

"You're afraid of anger, huh?"

I nodded.  "Yes," I answered softly.  "It's..." I searched my memory for the right word, "frightening."

Timberland 'oh'ed and gave me a squeeze, I was still in the small side hug of his.  He wore a small smile, the smallest of smiles I had ever seen.

"Hey, I get it.  Anger is scary, especially when you just learned about it.  But you're safe here, you got me and Buddy over there and 256 and probably Grace-but that's not quite for sure-and Reggie to protect you.  Until you head back to the New World, where I'm sure no one will ever get angry there.  They don't even know what anger is, so trust me, you'll be out of angers way for the rest of your life.  Pinkie promise." Timberland held out his pinkie to me, and I stared at it.

"Pinkie promise?" I asked.

"It's shows that it for sure will happen, that I'm absolutely telling the truth." he smiled wider.

"Why wouldn't you be telling the truth?" I asked, tilting my head.

Timberland dropped his hand and scrunched up his eyebrows, his gaze focused on the wall.

"Um..." Timberland started, but was cut off by 256 who walked into the room, looking Frustrated.

Or was she Angry?  She did get Angry and she did cause Timberland pain...  Was she Angry at the moment, and if she was, was she so Angry that she would want to hurt someone again?

"Come on guys, you said this wouldn't take too long.  Just go in, get Laila, and get out.  But you've been in here for forever!  Are we going or what?" she said, tossing her hair back and crossing her arms.

Timberland chuckled and stood up, walking towards the door.

"Alright, alright!  Hold your horses, 256.  We're coming.  Ever heard of the saying: Patience is a virtue?" Timberland asks.  256 shakes her head.  "Alright, well, basically it means..." Timberland started, and followed 256 out into the hall, explaining the saying.

I uncurled myself from the ball and got off my bed.  381 walked over to me.

"Are you going to be alright?" he asked me.

I looked out the door, and then back at him.  Hesitantly, I nodded.

"Yes, I think so." I said, and started heading towards the door.

That was the first time I had ever said anything without being 100% positive of it.  The first time I actually didn't feel confident in what I was saying.  And I didn't even realize it.

381 nodded shortly and we walked out of my room together, greeted by a bright smile and a red Annoyed face.

Question #23:  Is there a difference between Frustration, Annoyance, and Anger?  And if so, how much of a difference?  Are they all just as bad as each other, or are some worse than others?))
