Deathbringer
Deathbringer had had enough of Greatness.
He had already known that he would miss Glory beyond words, but Greatness stalking him made him compare them in his head every second.
"Deathy, do you want to go hunting together? I know the 'queen' says that sloths are off the menu, but seriously, who cares?" Even her voice was annoying, like star blades digging into his head.
Deathbringer turned to face her. "Greatness. I've already said this a million times. I'm not interested and frankly, I'm starting to hate you."
Greatness held a talon up to his face.
Every instinct in Deathbringer wanted to pull away and wrestle her to the ground, but it had been so long since he'd had physical contact. His mother had treated him only as an apprentice, and Glory avoided physical contact from nearly anyone.
So he let the curved talon slide down his face. He let the manipulative ex-princess speak.
"Hate can turn to love," Greatness said, her eyes smiling as though she knew his thoughts.
"Not this hate," Deathbringer said, but wasn't so sure. He didn't feel anything for the manipulative night wing, but given time, driven insane by a glory-less future, and tormented by her, he could. "And the sloths are off limits."
"Oh, poor sloths. Poor Deathy. So loyal to the Queen." Greatness shook her head pityingly. "Do your really think she likes you? She's humoring you. Probably thinks you're cute, fun for the time period. She's beautiful. Smart. Royalty. She could have anyone. Everyone loves her, and you think she would turn over her world to you?"
Deathbringer glared at her. He was about to make a sharp retort, but a thought came to him first.
"You're right," his eyes widened.
Greatness shot him a pleased smile.
"Everyone loves her," he said, and flew off into the sky, troubling thoughts propelling his wings faster.
Glory was indestructible, with armies and with her smarts and venom.Dragons had told him over and over again that she didn't need him.
But she did, and for no reason remotely romantic.
After all, Greatness was right. She was the most eligible dragon in Pyrrhia.
