Chapter Seven:
Goal:
"Hey Isla, wait!" Someone shouted. I turned around, confused about who could be calling me. I was heading back to houses from my last lesson of the day, walking round the path that led to the entrance. It was freezing, and my legs were shaking as the cold wind whipped at my skin. I was regretting not putting tights on. My hair whipped at my face as I struggled to see who had called me. The weather was terrible, one of the worst days of the year. It was raining, windy and despite only being 2pm, so foggy it was almost dark. I spotted someone jogging up to me and tried juggling the books in my hand around to move my hair from my eyes to see who it was. I ended up dropping a book, it landed on the wet floor.
"Oh, for god's sake." I muttered and crouched down to pick it up, it soggy and dripping, whilst trying not to flash my underwear. By the time I stood back up the boy was in front of me. Tall and soaking wet. "Elliot?" I asked and he gave me an awkward smile.
"Hey." He muttered. He had no coat, no jumper, no trousers. Simply a white t-shirt soaked so far it was see-through and some black shorts with trainers. Despite the fact he looked fit soaking wet, I couldn't understand how he wasn't shaking.
"Are you ok?" I asked him, being confused as to why he chased me down in the pouring rain.
"Yeah, I just...I saw you, and...I, um... I thought I should say hi." He rambled, looking down at the floor awkwardly. He pulled a face, looking confused at himself as the rain poured down his face, soaking his perfect skin and darkening his hair to a dark brown, hanging floppy over his forehead.
"Right." I said, looking at him with confusion. He was making me stand in the rain, soaking my outfit, my books, my hair and my make-up was running. Just to say hi? "Anything else or do you just want us to die of hypothermia?" I asked, looking directly at him, still shivering in my leather boots. I sniffed and sighed. I was going to have a cold after this.
"And, um. I sort of... lost my key." He muttered, looking at his trainers and frowning when he saw the muddy colour they had gone from the rain. I sighed. That was the real reason.
"Right, how did you manage that?" I asked. But before I could finish there was a loud clap of thunder and the rain suddenly poured harder... almost hurting. Everyone else that was previously around had run off, leaving just Elliot and I, in the pouring rain in the view of the whole campus. "I'm sorry I can't stay out here any longer." I said and started walking as quick as possible towards houses. It was only a minute away. When Elliot didn't follow me, I looked back at him. "Are you coming or what?" I shouted and he nodded, running to catch up at me.
Once we were inside, I pulled my drenched coat off straight away and sighed at the state of it. My long-sleeved red t-shirt was dry, but my coat, my black denim skirt and my leather ankle boots were drenched. As for Elliot... He may as well of had no t-shirt on.
"Oh, thank goodness you guys are back. We've been instructed to lock the doors because of the weather. All classes have been cancelled. You two were the last ones back." The house Matron, Meredith said, coming out from her office next to the front door and going to lock the door.
"Oh, we're sorry." I said and gave her a polite smile.
"No worries dear." She smiled back. She was an old woman, short and skinny. She dealt with everything in houses, medicine, illness, any issues and checking everyone was back for curfew. I didn't see her much, but she was lovely.
"Wait, if the doors are locked does that mean we can't go out at all?" Elliot asked, looking worried. Meredith nodded.
"Afraid so, Darling. No worries, Coach knows no one can make it." She re-assured, placing a soft hand on Elliot's soaking arm.
"No, it wasn't that, it's just that I lost-"
"His jumper." I interrupted, squeezing his other arm lightly. "He left it in the changing rooms and was just about to go back for it when I told him we should go in because of the weather." I lied and gave Meredith a big, sweet smile. Elliot looked down at me in confusion, but I continued to squeeze his arm tight. Praying he got the message.
"Oh, that's a shame dear. I'm sure it will still be there tomorrow." Meredith answered, thankfully believing me. "Would you like me to dry your coat sweetie? I've taken everyone's that was outside but yours will probably take the longest." She gently took the coat from my hand as I grabbed my room key from it.
"Thank you, we best be off." I waved and headed for the stairs.
"But I-"
Before Elliot could drop himself in it, I grabbed him by his hand and pulled him with me up the stairs quickly.
"What was that for?" He asked once we were up the stairs, looking down at my hand gripping his. I looked down at it too, and as soon and the butterflies in my stomach started, I quickly let go.
"That was me saving your arse." I said and he laughed.
"Don't ever say that again."
"Why not?" I asked, beginning to unlock my door. I was praying I had no dirty underwear lying on the floor like normal.
"It's just wrong. You're too posh. It's saved your ass, not arse." He mocked and I stopped what I was doing to look at him with a blank expression.
"Shut up."
Once the door was finally unlocked, I opened it and walked in. Luckily walking into a clean room.
"Make yourself at home." I muttered and gestured for Elliot to come in. He looked around as he walked in, looking around curiously but standing up awkwardly. I shut the door after him and immediately opened my draws to find something warm and comfortable to wear. I picked a pair of jeans up and River scoffed.
"You're going to wear jeans when you're soaking wet?" He asked and I looked over at him in confusion.
"Yeah?"
"You weirdo, do you not own anything comfortable?" He asked and I looked over at him with furrowed eyebrows.
"Jeans are comfortable." I argued and he stopped in his tracks looking at me with disgust.
"Leave." He muttered and I rolled my eyes.
"I'm going to have a shower first anyway, I'm freezing. Once I'm done you can have one and we'll find you something to wear." I offered and surprisingly he nodded. I smiled at him, dropped my jeans back in my draws and opened the door to my bathroom. I shut it and as I was getting undressed called out to him. "How did you lose your keys then?"
"Uhm. Long story" He shouted back.
"I'm not busy." I said whilst struggling to pull my skirt off.
"Basically dropped them down the drain." He shouted and I stopped. I opened the door enough to fit my head round and looked at him. He jumped at the sound of me opening the door from his space on my bed and frowned at me. "What?" He asked, his eyes travelling from my face down to my bare shoulder. He gulped and I tried not to blush. I didn't think about the fact I had nothing on but underwear. Everything was hidden, but my bare shoulder was hanging around the door along with my head.
"How did you just casually drop your keys down the drain?" I asked in shock and he shrugged. He stared me directly in the eyes and the look on his face made me feel tingly.
"Sometimes I get distracted." He muttered, his voice deep and gravelly as his eyes slowly traced my neck down to my shoulder. I gulped.
"By what?" I asked, my voice coming out quiet and shaky. He shrugged again and looked away.
"Pretty things." He said and the butterflies in my stomach began to run a riot.
Did he mean me?
"Oh." I said and shut the door again. I ran the shower and took off my underwear. I looked at myself in the mirror and sighed. There was no way in hell he could have meant me. My mascara was smeared below my eyes and my foundation had gone patchy with the remnants of rain drops resting on my forehead. My bronzer had blended with my concealer leaving me a muddy colour and my hair was tangled from the wind.
Once I was in the shower, I scrubbed my body raw of the cold, steaming the room with the scent of scalding water and vanilla chocolate. The water ran down my body, droplet by droplet warming up every inch of my skin and as I ran the conditioner over my hair, my head tilted back under the water there was a loud knock on the door.
"Isla?"
It was Elliot. His deep voice reverberated through the small bathroom, sending shivers down my spine despite the scalding heat of the water.
"Yeah?" I called back.
"I need a wee." He said and I sighed.
"Can't you hold it? I'll be 10 minutes."
"No, Isla. I'm actually going to piss myself." He groaned and the sound made my insides churn.
"Fine one minute." I said, making sure that I had pulled the shower curtain completely across. "Come in then" I shouted, and I heard the door open. I continued with washing my hair as I heard the slam of the toilet seat being pulled up. I sighed. Why couldn't boys just sit down?
"It smells well nice in here." He muttered and I scrunched my face up.
"Are we really doing this?" I asked him. He began to pee, and I cringed.
"Do what?" He asked and I sighed.
"Talk whilst you're peeing. It's bad enough you're in here." I complained. The toilet flushed as he walked over to the sink. I could see his shadow through the curtain and as he turned to face the curtain he spoke.
"Not for me." He muttered and my mouth dropped. There was silence before he laughed. "I'm joking chill out I can tell you're panicking behind there." He reassured and my body fell with relief.
"Just hurry up and get out." I muttered, feeling embarrassed. I finished washing my hair and just stood under the water, waiting for him to leave so I could get out.
"Can't I hurry up and get in?" He said suggestively but laughed straight afterwards. I sighed and shook my head.
"I'm trying to get out hurry up!" I complained and he laughed, walking away and shutting the door behind him. Once he was gone, I shut the water off and sighed in relief.
How awkward.
Once I grabbed a towel, I dried off but realised I didn't take any clean clothes with me. I sighed. I was going to have to go out there. Not only was I nervous enough that Elliot was in my room in the first place, but he had come into the bathroom to wee whilst I was naked behind the curtain and now, I was going to have to face him in a towel.
Although it felt like it wasn't my day; I couldn't deny that I was excited to have him here. I fancied him, that was obvious, but it was nothing more than a silly crush. I didn't know him well enough. However, having him trapped inside houses due to the weather with him having lost his room key seemed like a prime opportunity. We had barely spoken but I felt rather comfortable in front of him and I wasn't sure why. I had invited him into my room and I barely knew the boy. I had no idea where my sudden confidence had come from.
"Can you just shut your eyes for a bit?" I asked him as I opened the bathroom door.
"Why?" He asked as I walked out. Once he spotted I was in my towel he nodded and laid on his front, burying his head into my pillows. I quickly strutted over to my draws and grabbed some new underwear. I noticed a pair of thermal leggings on the bed.
"Why have you got my leggings out?" I asked him and he sat up and began to turn around. "Hey!" I warned and he quickly laid back down.
"Sorry I forgot. You said the comfiest thing you owned was jeans, but they look comfier." He said and I rolled my eyes.
"You went through my draws?" I asked him and he shrugged.
"Only the one your jeans were in." He said, muffled by the pillows. I sighed and headed back to the bathroom with my underwear, and the ribbed black leggings in my hand. The red top I had on previously was still dry. Once I was dressed, I towel dried my hair and set out a new towel and flannel for Elliot. I walked back into my room and bent down to get my hairdryer from under my bed. As I stood back up Elliot was sitting with his back against my pillows watching me with an intense look in his eyes.
"What?" I asked him and he shook his head, looking away and clearing his throat.
"Nothing. Told you I get distracted." He said and winked jokingly. I laughed nervously and shook my head, my wet hair hitting my face. I could feel my face getting hot and I tried to play it cool. I had no make-up on, he could not think I was pretty.
"Shut up and get in the shower." I muttered and he nodded, standing up from my bed and waltzing over to the bathroom. Once he was gone, I fell onto my bed, a new smell lining the covers that smelt like aftershave and rain and sighed in relief.
It was going to be a very long night if he kept saying things like that. A very long and dangerous night. Every time he spoke to me I nearly collapsed with nerves and excitement, let alone when he was flirting with me – albeit jokingly but still flirting nevertheless. A boy like him would never be interested in a girl like me. I wasn't special enough. But the way he made me feel made me hope that there was a chance. But I knew it was a stupid thought. I didn't even know him. So, I blasted it away with the sound and heat of my hairdryer then busied myself with attempting to find something for Elliot to wear before he walked out in just a towel and I fainted.
