Chapter 2
Sean Evans decided today that he wanted to go home for dinner. He figured his wife would like him to devise another excuse for why he hadn't been home. He thought she would've already figured it out.
He parked his black BMW outside the six-car garage, grabbed his briefcase, and rushed in through the door.
"Ellie, sweetie. I'm home," Sean sneered, a scowl on his face. He knew he never loved her. He only used her because his father told him he had to marry before he was allowed to take over the family business. He never explained to Elizabeth about the family business because she thought he loved her. He enjoyed playing with her, her family, and her emotions. He almost laughed out loud at how stupid her family could be.
"Elizabeth, sweetheart," he called again, knowing she usually answered by now. "Ellie, babe. Where are you?"
Elizabeth had set everything up, knowing just what to say and do. She had strategically placed the photos beneath the plate he was to use for dinner, then filled the wine glasses with his favorite wine from the cellar. She knew he would think it was just a typical dinner in their house, but she knew it was the last night she would call him her husband. She could hear Sean in the foyer calling out her name as if she were just a dog to him. She scoffed but replaced it with a fake smile as she yelled back to him.
"In the kitchen, sweetheart."
She sat in a chair as she had already dipped herself a plate of her delicious dinner. Sean came in looking stressed, but she didn't care. He sat at the table and looked at her as if he expected her to dip his food.
"You have legs."
Sean scowled but got up and dipped his food. When he returned, he noticed the photos beneath the plate he was about to place back down. "What is this?"
Elizabeth took a drink of water and asked him, "What do you think it is, Sean? What does it look like to you?"
Sean looked at the pictures, and his face paled as he realized they were of him and his assistant Hannah. They had started the affair six months earlier when Hannah kept seducing Sean until he caved. He was a man, and he wasn't a blind man. Hannah Reyes had beautifully tan skin and flowing blonde hair that just kissed her shoulders and lips that could compare with Angelina Jolie's. Hannah knew he was a married man and didn't care, as she had heard the rumors of him and Stephanie, his last assistant. Of course, they weren't rumors, but she didn't have to know that. Sean had sat and was staring at the pictures until anger consumed him.
"You had me followed? How dare you?" He was standing again, almost in Elizabeth's face.
Elizabeth sat calmly, not letting Sean know her heart was on the living room floor. "I did not. My parents did. And I'm glad. Now, I know of your extracurricular activities, and you no longer have to make up excuses."
Sean seemed to be in shock; he hadn't expected that answer. He knew her parents disliked him. They were weary of him since he had made Elizabeth leave the church. "Your parents? Hmm. Now that you know, it can be out in the open. I'll bring her home tomorrow, and you can cook for her. I think you'll like her a lot."
It was Elizabeth's turn to be shocked. "You want me to be friends with the woman you cheated on me with?"
Sean smiled and nodded, "Well, of course. I'm not going to break up with her."
Elizabeth couldn't believe him. Her anger finally overflowed, and she let it loose. "How dare you! First, you cheat on me with some floozy, and then when I tell you I know, you want to invite her over for a chat? I don't think so, Sean."
Elizabeth left the kitchen with Sean following her. She raced up the stairs aiming for their bedroom. Sean knew what she was doing but decided to try to stop her.
"Ellie, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that. Will you forgive me?"
Elizabeth turned so fast that Sean was almost knocked over. "Forgive you? I have no plans to forgive you. I plan to divorce you."
Sean felt faint. He knew his father would take away the company if he lost Elizabeth. He had to figure out what to do to avoid losing his company.
"Ellie, I love you. I'm sorry. I will never do it again. I'll break up with her. Please don't leave me," Sean was almost ready to beg her.
Elizabeth hesitated but continued to look for what she was looking for. She made an 'ah' sound and pulled out an old gray and brown suitcase. She opened it and began to put her clothes in it. She piled them into a pile and then began to fold them.
"Elizabeth, Ellie. Sweetheart, please. What can I do to get you to forgive me?"
Elizabeth turned to look at him again, tears flowing from her eyes. "Answer me one thing. Have you ever loved me?"
Sean hesitated, but that was all the answer Elizabeth needed. She gave him everything. She left the church for him. She stopped talking to her family for him. She left her friends for him. It didn't take her long to realize how stupid she had been. But there was something that kept coming into her mind.
"Why did you marry me if you didn't love me? Huh?"
Sean stood by the closet and looked for excuses, but he decided now would be the time to tell her the truth.
"My family owns a business. When I got the promotion, I was taking over the business from my father. But, before I could take it over, he required me to do one thing... Get married."
Elizabeth shook her head at the news, "So you used me? To take over your family's business?" Sean nodded. "Well, now you can use your floozy; I'm done."
Sean could see the decision in her eyes, so he left their room to leave Elizabeth to pack. Elizabeth continued packing and kept thinking. She couldn't believe she had been used by the man she loved with all her heart. She decided then that she would never love again. She knew that if she did, she would only be hurt again.
Elizabeth had finished packing her clothes when she realized she had nowhere to go. Her mind wandered to her friends and her family. She had left them for the man who betrayed her, and they would never forgive her. She could call them but didn't want to be rejected again. After all, she left the church just because her husband told her. Who does that? You do, she thought.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the jingle of her phone. She reached into her pants pocket and pulled the slick iPhone out, not glancing at the phone before she said a quick 'hello.'
"Lizzy, sweetheart."
Elizabeth's breath hitched as she heard a voice she hadn't heard in two years: her mother's.
"Mommy," she whispered, tears pricking at her eyes again. "Why are you calling me?"
"Oh, sweetie. Nathaniel called me and told me that you would need me. So, I'm here."
Elizabeth shook her head in confusion, "Mom. I don't need a phone call right now. I need a hug."
"That's why I'm here," came a voice behind her. She turned quickly, dropping the phone. There in front of her was Lily Fletcher in all her glory. Lily, Elizabeth's little sister, was the only family member that Elizabeth kept in touch with. She told Lily all her secrets, always being there for each other in times like these.
Elizabeth raced to her 20-year-old sister and launched herself into her arms. Elizabeth could hear the calm words of her sister telling her to 'let it out' and 'cry your heart out.' Being just twenty, Lily Beth Fletcher has never experienced heartbreak like her sister, but she knew it would be bad. She knew that her sister would blame herself instead of blaming Sean. Lily knew her sister better than Elizabeth knew herself.
"Sean doesn't deserve you. You are too good for him."
Lily's comment only made Elizabeth cry harder. She had loved Sean. She had imagined them having children together, growing old watching their grandkids playing in their yard together. But now Elizabeth couldn't even see her future. Not anymore.
"Get your stuff. We're leaving."
Elizabeth straightened and grabbed her suitcase, carrying it out of the open door and down the stairs. They were headed in the direction of the door when Sean stopped them.
"Where are you two going?"
Lily huffed and felt the need to punch Sean, so she did that. She balled her hand into a fist and let it go, hitting Sean in the nose. She could hear a crunch as her fist left his face, telling her she had broken his nose.
She smirked, "I'm taking my sister where she should've been all along: home."
