Chapter 5
"How dare he? He cheated on me, not the other way around! How dare he file for divorce."
Elizabeth stood in the kitchen holding the divorce papers tenderly as if they might explode. Thalia stood by the sink, washing dishes from lunch; Lily sat at the table, occasionally glancing at Heath, who sat at the other end.
"Well, baby. It's what you wanted, wasn't it?"
Elizabeth looked at her mother, "Yes, Mom. But I wanted to do it on my terms, not his. He cheated; he should be the one getting the divorce papers, not me."
Heath said, "Hey, at least you're getting a divorce, right? That's all that matters."
Elizabeth groaned, "I hate it when you're right."
That night, Abraham sat in the living room with his daughter, slowly caressing her hair while she lay on his lap.
"Daddy, what did I do wrong?"
Abraham shook his head, "Nothing Princess. Maybe it wasn't God's plan."
Elizabeth could feel the tears in her eyes. "I thought it was. I thought he was the perfect guy. I thought our lives would be so perfect and that I would be the happiest I've ever been."
"He deceived us all, baby. He deceived Pastor. He pretended to be a godly man, and he got what he wanted. God has a way of sending us back to the beginning."
Elizabeth sat up, "I don't even believe in Him anymore, Daddy."
Abraham hugged his daughter as unshed tears hit his eyes, "Princess, you know He's there. You may think he's not because of this hard time, but He's there. He always is."
Lizzy sighed and leaned against her dad's chest, "I just don't feel Him anymore, like He's abandoned me."
Abraham thought of this for a while and then said, "You know the story of Delilah and Samson?"
"The one with the hair?"
"Yes. Samson's hair was a blessing. God blessed it. When he met Delilah, he had no idea she was working for the Philistines to kill him. She made Samson fall in love with her and kept asking about the secret to his strength. Of course, God had told him never to tell anyone, or they would use it against him.
"Well, after lying to Delilah several times, Samson finally told Delilah the truth: that his hair was the reason for his strength. So, while Samson slept, Delilah cut all his hair off, then called to the Philistines, and Samson was captured. A scripture says: 'And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke from his sleep and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the Lord was departed from him.' Delilah had tricked Samson, and when his hair was gone, God's glory was too. But Samson had no idea God had left him, which ended his life.
"He got too comfortable, and it's the same with you. You got too comfortable with your and Sean's lifestyle and felt God abandoned you. But He hasn't, not really. But you have to want Him back in your life."
Elizabeth listened to the story and enjoyed it. Her father knew what he was discussing, but she was still skeptical.
"How about you come to church with us on Sunday? We won't pressure you, but a few people would love to catch up with you."
Lizzy thought about it; she thought about her old friends, who are all probably married with kids now. She thought about the good times they had had before she met Sean. She could imagine the looks she'd get when she walked through those church doors again.
"I'll think about it, Dad. I don't think I'm quite ready for that yet."
Abraham nodded, and they were quiet.
The following day was Saturday; Elizabeth woke from her sleep and recognized the couch. She must've fallen asleep on her father. Elizabeth quickly ran up the stairs and dressed for another day. She sighed as her thoughts rushed to Sean. She remembered when they first met:
It was a cold November night, and Elizabeth was taking a walk. She was distracted by something on her phone and bumped into a wall. Lizzy slipped on the ground, but a hand caught her before she crashed down. Lizzy looked up and noticed green eyes underneath a bush of curly brown hair.
"Thank you," she had said to the cute stranger.
"You're welcome."
She looked at him and smiled as she pushed her hand into his for an introduction.
"Elizabeth Fletcher, but my friends call me Lizzy."
The green-eyed stranger took her hand and shook it, still staring at her. "Sean Evans. Pleased to meet you."
Elizabeth smiled to herself and almost laughed when Sean started another conversation.
Elizabeth's smile quickly faded as she remembered the pictures of Sean and Hannah. But even as her mind flashed to the photos, she couldn't help but remember their first date:
"Lizzy, Sean's here."
Elizabeth stood at the top of the stairs wearing the black and red dress her mother had helped her pick out. Her brown hair was in an intricate hairdo that took Lily almost two hours to pull off. Her hands gripped tightly to the railing as she slowly walked down the stairs, keeping her eyes on the red stilettos on her feet. She kept her gaze low, hoping she didn't disappoint Sean.
She stopped at the end of the stairs and looked up, finally meeting Sean's green stare. His eyes shined with admiration and some other kind of emotion. He quickly grabbed her wrist and kissed the back of her hand, ensuring Elizabeth blushed.
"You look amazing, Ellie. You always do."
Ellie: That's what Sean called her. It was different, she had only ever had two nicknames, but she was happy that Sean liked her enough to give her a nickname. Her cheeks glowed red as Sean escorted her out the door, warned by her father to be home at a decent hour. Sean laughed and continued their way.
Sean had taken them to the park; It was the middle of the day, packed with couples and families. Sean had placed a blanket on the ground and searched through a basket he had brought.
"Are we having a picnic?"
Sean looked at her and smiled a smile that could send any woman into cardiac arrest. "It was the first thing I thought of."
Elizabeth smiled and sat down beside him, "It's perfect."
Tears rushed down her face as she reminisced on her bed. She couldn't remember the last time Sean said 'I love you' apart from the other day. Her tears flowed from her eyes as she held the pillow to her face. She thought of the first time they had kissed; of course, coming from a religious family, it was on their wedding day.
"Do you, Sean Michael Evans, take Elizabeth Gail Fletcher to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and hold, in sickness and health, in richer or poorer for as long as you both shall live?"
Of course, Elizabeth hadn't noticed Sean's eyes dart from her face to behind her, but he quickly nodded.
"I do."
"And do you, Elizabeth Gail Fletcher, take Sean Michael Evans to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and hold, in sickness and health, in richer or poorer for as long as you both shall live?"
Elizabeth didn't even hesitate, "I do."
"Well, by the power vested in me, by the state of Oklahoma, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."
Sean's lips were on Elizabeth's even before the minister had said the words. Her first kiss was terrific. It was just like everyone said it would be, wet and weird at first, but she got used to it.
She hadn't noticed that there were no 'fireworks' as her mother had told her about. Elizabeth was just happy with her first kiss.
She couldn't help but think of all the good times she had with Sean, the little dates he would take her on, all the flirting they would do around the house, the 'spell' she was under during their first year of marriage. She could only imagine how Sean felt during that time. Did he ever really love her?
Her thoughts were interrupted by someone knocking on the bedroom door. She wiped her tears away and whispered a soft 'Come in.' She was surprised when she saw who it was.
"May I come in for a moment?"
Elizabeth nodded and motioned for him to sit on her bed.
"If you don't mind, I think I'll stand."
She nodded and motioned for him to continue.
"I'm sorry about what happened yesterday. I was out of line to tell you to leave, and all I ask of you is to forgive me."
Lizzy nodded, not knowing what to say.
Oliver said, "My father told me to tell you he'll take your case. They asked me to come to get some information from you, seeing as you left so suddenly yesterday. Which again is my fault. You can come by tomorrow to fill out some paperwork."
Elizabeth blushed, remembering her temper yesterday. "Sorry, I've had a rough couple of days."
Oliver nodded, obviously knowing the situation. "I'm sorry your husband hurt you, Mrs. Ev-"
"Elizabeth. Call me Elizabeth."
"Elizabeth, but we'll help you win this case."
Reminding Lizzy, she walked to her dresser and pulled open the drawer, revealing the manila envelope. "He sent me these today. You can take them because I don't fully understand them. I don't talk legal."
She handed it to Oliver, and he nodded, thanking her. "I hope you don't waste too many tears on him. You're too beautiful to cry over a man."
With that, Oliver left, leaving Elizabeth speechless.
