Lost -- Chapter 4
Getting home from the hospital was long. The hospital is an hour long drive away from my house. The entire drive was silent, as I had put my headphones in and blasting my music. As soon as I saw my mom had stopped the car, I leapt out of the car and headed directly to the front door. I jumped up the stairs skipping a step with each jump, and slammed the door to my room closed. I slid down my door, wishing that my bedroom had a lock.
I stood up again, heading to my bed, turning on my light so that I can read my book; 'Silence' by Natasha Preston. It's my favourite book. In a way, the main character of the book, Oakley Farrell is similar to me. Oakley was a happy girl, until the age of five, when something happened that scarred her for life, and caused her to stop talking to anyone.
Something happened to me too, that made me change everything about me. Except I still talked.
Moments after I lay on my bed, I heard light footsteps coming towards my room. The footsteps pause for a moment, at my door, before I heard my mom sigh and keep on walking towards her room. I heard the door gently shut and then sobs coming from my mom's room. I let out a shaky sigh, as I listened to my mother crying. I hated when she cried. The sound of your own mother crying is such a painful sound, especially when you can't do anything about it.
Not being able to listen to her anymore, I popped in my headphones again and played 'Beside You' by Marianas Trench.
It's my fault that my mom has been crying by herself in her room for the last four years. I know it's because I'm not happy. It makes me feel guilty as Hell, but I can't help it. I'm scared to make friends. I don't want to put my heart and trust on the line.
Hours pass as I listen to music and read, when I heard a faint knock on my door. "Come in," I mumble quietly, not putting my book down.
My little brother poked his head through my bedroom door, "dinner is ready."
I nod. "Okay Jack." I waited till I heard the door shut before turning my music off to listen to the sound of my mom crying; but I didn't hear it.
I put my phone in my pocket and shoved my book onto my bookshelf before heading downstairs.
The first thing I see is my mom's puffy, red cheeks, and I instantly feel bad. "Mom?"
My mom shakes her head, putting her plate away. "Eat without me," she said, heading for the stairs.
I stare at her in disbelief. I don't want to be at home right now.
I storm to the front hallway and throw my flip-flops on, despite it being late fall, and run out. As soon as I'm outside and walking I regret not leaving with a jacket; it's freezing outside.
I continue walking until I have no idea where I am. I look at my phone. It was seven fifteen, I'd been gone for an hour, and I had six missed calls from my mom and from the house phone, which I can assume was from my brother.
I just keep walking, hoping to come across a street that I was familiar with.
This strategy wasn't working so well.
I finally pulled out my phone to search up directions to my home, and as I kept walking I felt myself bump into someone, and heard a flurry of barks. I fell backwards with a small 'oof' and landed on my ass.
"Taylor?" the sound of my name being spoken by the familiar voice sent shivers down my spine. I looked up at saw the face that belonged to Jessie.
Jessie was wearing a thick fall coat(smart child) and a scarf that covered his neck. "What are you doing in a t-shirt and flip-flops?" Jessie questioned me, holding out a hand to help me up.
I slapped his hand away from me and got myself up. "None of your business," I muttered at him, beginning to walk away.
"Taylor Rose." Jessie said my full name, and made me stop in my tracks. I slowly turn around and gave him a questioning look, hoping that he didn't see me shivering from the cold.
But of course, he did. "You must be freezing," he said, shrugging his coat off, "here, take this."
I just looked at him, but shook my head. "No thanks." I responded, turning around again.
"Wait!" I heard Jessie's voice again.
"What?" I snapped, turning around, unable to control myself anymore. "I just want to be alone, why can't you leave me alone?"
Jessie's brown eyes were wide in shock, and then his face became apologetic. "I'm sorry."
I didn't respond, I just turned and walked away.
