Chapter 2
Miles stood by the hospital bed, his eyes fixed on the pale face of Mairi. She lay motionless under a white sheet, her chest rising and falling with the help of a respirator. Wires and tubes connected her to various machines that beeped and blinked in a steady rhythm. Miles felt a pang of guilt and fear in his chest. He had been arguing with her before the accident. He had said some things he regretted. He wished he could take them back.
He reached out and gently stroked her hair, which was matted with blood and dirt. He remembered how she used to curl it around her fingers when she was nervous or bored. How she used to laugh when he teased her about it.
He leaned down and whispered in her ear now, hoping she could hear him.
"Please wake up, Mairi. Please wake up." He begged, his voice cracking. "I'm sorry for everything."
She's beginning to regain consciousness.
Miles looked over at Mairi, who started to open her eyes. Her eyelids fluttered and he leaned forward to look at her face, smiling. Her face was still pale and her breathing was labored. The monitor nearby made a soft beep.
"Thank goodness you're okay," he breathed out in relief. "I thought you were going to be gone forever."
Miles kissed her forehead and brushed the hair out of her eyes.
Miles sat by Mairi's bedside in the softly lit hospital room. He brushed her hair away from her face with a tender sigh, his worry evident in his expression. "How do you feel?" he asked, concern lacing his voice.
"Not... good," Mairi replied weakly, her voice barely a whisper. Miles let out a soft chuckle, relief mixed with humor. "I'm glad you're not dead." His lips pressed gently against her forehead, the kiss holding a depth of emotion that lingered longer than before.
"You don't look really good," Miles managed to tease, a feeble attempt at humor despite her weakened state. "I thought you almost died?"
Mairi sighed, her eyes filled with genuine worry as he continued to hold her hand, his fingers intertwined with hers. "Is it... really that... bad?" he asked gently, searching her eyes for any sign of pain.
"Yes. Mairi, you were dying," Miles responded, his tone serious and sincere. He brushed his thumb over the back of her hand, a soothing gesture. "Your eyes were glazed over, you were coughing... I thought you were going to be gone... forever."
"How long do I have?" Mairi's voice trembled, a mixture of fear and resignation in her words.
"About a month," Miles replied softly, his gaze not leaving hers. He held her hand a bit tighter, as if trying to anchor her to the present moment. "But I promise you I'll take care of you for however long you have left, okay?"
Mairi nodded weakly, her eyes filling with tears. "Okay," she managed to say, her voice wavering with emotion. Miles smiled, his eyes conveying a depth of caring that words couldn't capture. He kissed her forehead once more, his lips lingering as if imprinting the moment.
"Just rest up. I'm sorry I got mad," Miles apologized, his voice tinged with regret. He hesitated for a moment, his gaze locked with Mairi's. "I'm just worried, y'know?"
Mairi's eyes softened as she looked at him, her fingers giving his hand a gentle squeeze. "I can't blame you for being mad," she admitted, her voice a faint whisper.
"Yeah, yeah, I know," Miles replied, a hint of vulnerability in his expression. He hesitated, his cheeks turning a faint shade of pink. "And that's not the only reason why I'm worried."
Curiosity danced in Mairi's eyes, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "What's the other reason?" she inquired, her voice teasing.
Miles felt his face grow even redder, his heart racing. "Uhhhh... It's nothing. Actually, that's a lie. It's—" He stumbled over his words, his embarrassment apparent. "It's not nothing..."
By the next morning Miles occupied an armchair beside Mairi's hospital bed, holding her hand as daylight filtered through the window. His expression held a gentle warmth, as if he'd recalled a cherished memory. "How are you feeling this morning?" he asked, his tone soft and caring.
"A feel much better actually," Mairi replied, a hint of genuine relief in her voice.
"Good. Glad to hear it," Miles said, his smile widening. He squeezed her hand, the affection between them palpable. He took a deep breath, his demeanor shifting as a sense of nervousness crept in. "Hey... uh..."
Mairi met his gaze, her curiosity piqued. "Yeah?"
Miles gathered his courage, his eyes filled with a mix of emotions. "Mairi, there's something I've been meaning to tell you." He paused, swallowing the lump in his throat. Taking another deep breath, he leaned forward slightly, his intent clear in his gaze.
"You like me, right?" Mairi's question hung in the air, a mix of vulnerability and anticipation evident in her eyes.
Miles blinked, caught off guard by the directness of her question. His heart raced, and he stumbled over his words. "H-Huh?! Oh, well—" He looked slightly flustered, his gaze shifting to the floor. "Of course. We're partners in crime, aren't we?" He attempted a light-hearted tone, though his true feelings were harder to disguise.
Mairi's expression shifted, a hint of disappointment fleeting across her features. "Is that all you wanted to tell me?"
Miles looked at her, a mixture of surprise and realization dawning on his face. "Y'know, I—" Just then, the hospital room's door swung open, and a doctor walked in, interrupting their conversation.
"Hey, uh, doc?" Miles' voice wavered, his face flushing with embarrassment at the timing.
The doctor's entrance was met with a sudden fit of coughing from Mairi, harsh and unsettling. Miles winced at the sound, his grip on her hand tightening involuntarily. He turned to the doctor, a mix of concern and urgency in his voice. "Doc, she was fine a second ago!"
The doctor quickly moved to Mairi's side, assessing her vitals with a furrowed brow. Miles tried to peer over the doctor's shoulder, anxiety evident in his posture. "Please, doc!"
The doctor turned to Miles, his expression grave. "She's in critical condition. Her vitals are dropping quickly, and she could pass anytime."
Miles' gasp was almost drowned out by Mairi's sudden cessation of coughing. He turned back to her with a mixture of horror and disbelief, holding her hand as if willing her to hold on. His gaze flicked back to the monitor, tracking her pulse and breath.
"No, no, no," Miles whispered, a mantra of desperation as he looked back to the doctor. "There's got to be something we can do. Please, doc!"
As the tension in the room grew, Mairi's voice broke through the air, her coughing subsiding. "Miles...?" Her fragile tone was laced with confusion.
Miles' gaze snapped to Mairi, his eyes widening in astonishment. "Mairi? Are you—"
But her words cut through the uncertainty, revealing her fear and raw emotion. "I... I... I don't... I don't want to die!!"
Miles was frozen for a moment, his own heartache mingling with hers. Without hesitation, he enveloped her in a tight hug, his arms holding her close as if shielding her from the world's uncertainty. "Hey, hey, hey. Listen, just relax for a second. I'm here for you," he whispered, his voice a soothing balm.
"I don't want you to die either. But I'm here, okay? You're not alone," Miles reassured, his words a promise of unwavering support. He stroked her hair gently, his touch tender and calming. "Trust me."
Mairi nodded through her tears, her grip on him unyielding. "Okay, I will."
"Good," Miles replied, a soft smile gracing his lips. He continued to hold her, a mixture of relief and tenderness filling the space between them. "But for your own sake, you need to stay calm. Okay?"
He stole a glance at the monitor, relief washing over him as he saw her vitals stabilize. "See, you're fine. I told you I will take care of you, yeah?" Miles smiled, his voice gentle and reassuring.
Mairi nodded, a small smile breaking through her tears.
"See? It's all okay now."
And in that moment, as the dawn's light illuminated the room, their bond grew stronger, forged through the crucible of uncertainty and fear.
