Chapter one
*rubs hands together evilly* right let's get into this. This is gonna be fun...for me at least.
"I don't understand this insufferable tradition," Damian complained as he and Jason walked around Gotham. Tonight was Halloween and Damian was forced to have the night off to participate in trick or treating. Something about needing time to be a kid. He didn't see much point in it but there was no arguing with Dick when he had his mind set on something. Speaking of, Dick promised he'd finish patrol earlier than usual and then meet them at some point but for now, it was just him and Jason who'd been roped in by the promise of getting to skip out whenever asked to look after the younger. Damian had wondered why Bruce hadn't joined him instead of Jason but as always the answer was that there was simply too much work to do tonight. He supposed Halloween was a bit like a themed villain's Christmas. Especially for the likes of Scarecrow who was inherently scary.
"What's there not to understand? You get free food for looking spooky," Jason replied. He was wearing a shirt that said life is scary as his costume whilst Damian was forced to dress like a pirate. It was somewhat historically accurate per his standards but he wasn't allowed to accompany the costume with a period-accurate sword. He was left with a foam sword that left a small trail of peeled-off paint on his costume. He huffed and looked in his goody bag to see his haul so far. Sweet treats weren't his thing, he was a savoury type of person but he could always give them to Jon or Dick. He'd got quite the collection already and they were nowhere near done.
"How do we know the treats haven't been poisoned?" he asked, eyeing up a Haribo packet he picked up.
"Bruce will check them like he always does. He has done since Dick accidentally took acid thinking it was candy," Jason reminisced. "Best part was I gave it to him because I thought it had gone off. He nearly died after doing a backflip over a speeding car. It was pretty cool until the other car came." He laughed and Damian grimaced. Funny how poisoning someone was hilarious when he did it but not when Damian did. For the record, he snuck arsenic into a bully's lunch. It wasn't enough to kill him so he didn't see the need to panic as everyone else did but it was apparently enough to be grounded and banned from the chemical cupboard.
They were walking past an alleyway when they heard struggling. Although they couldn't do much outside of the uniform they could at least double team whoever was causing trouble in a seemingly feasibly fight. Damian whipped around first but cocked his head in confusion upon finding there was no one to attack instead there was a small boy struggling to put his boots on. A small boy that wore a Robin suit that was very similar to Dick's suit when he held the title. Well, it was the second more modest version of Dick's suit. The features were too detailed to be a child in cosplay plus he had no bag for sweets and no parents. He found that awfully suspicious and Jason must've thought the same thing as he asked, "Robin?" The boy's head whipped around and he pulled out a birdarang for protection.
"Oh, civilians. How are you two doing?" he asked, putting his weapon away. He smiled at them but they were too confused to smile back. He sounded exactly like Dick did at that age. He was wearing the edited version of his costume too which made him a spitting image of the eldest back in his youth but how could he be their Dick Grayson? "Something wrong you two?" he added, cocking his head in confusion. That voice was too similar to just be some kid who happened to look like Dick. He could just sorta look like the acrobat they knew but that didn't sit right with them and to be honest, one of them turning into a kid wasn't too out of the ordinary for Gotham so it wasn't off the table. They'd experienced weirder in the form of ManBat.
"Yes, you're a child!" Jason exclaimed.
"Well yes, I am the Boy Wonder. Boy kinda gives it away. Unless you're new in town I don't see how you didn't know about that."
"Why is he a child?" Damian shouted.
"Because I am? I don't know what to tell ya buddy. Can I ask you two some questions once you're done with your little existential crisis there?" They nodded, their mouths slightly open in awe of what they were seeing. None of them had been around for when he was a kid yet still felt some sort of nostalgia for seeing him in the old costume and the squeaky prepubescent voice. "Did either of you see me get here? Or catch me running or something a couple of hours ago?" They shook their heads. They hadn't seen him since they left. "Odd. Very odd. Well thanks for your cooperation, have fun tonight."
"Wait!" Jason shouted. "You should come with us." Robin laughed a little at him.
"Sorry but I have work to do, besides, I can't trust anyone willy-nilly. It's a big no-no to go to a secondary location with a stranger unless I want death. I don't want death." They sighed with aggravation. Stranger danger could be a real hindrance in these situations. Not to mention they constantly worked with strangers and only an idiot would go up to Robin and ask him to come with them somewhere without good reason.
"Dick, you should come with us," Jason said sternly. His eyes widened and the weapon was pulled out again, his suspicions immediately coming back about the pair.
"How do you know my name? I mean what makes you think that's my name," he corrected hurriedly. He mentally cursed himself but kept the stern glare on his face. It was a tamer version of the batglare yet it still worked somewhat.
"This is going to sound crazy but you are not really a child. Just a few hours ago you were twenty-six. We're your family, your brothers, sort of, depends on who you ask. Jason and Damian." He pointed to himself and then Damian to make the point. "Do you remember us?" Robin shook his head and slightly lowered his weapon. Not the craziest thing to happen but he wasn't going to risk it.
"Alright Jason, if you're my family then tell me something only my family would know." Damian looked to Jason with a soft nod showing he could take it from here. He knew Dick the best and Jason had already done most of the work.
"Your name is Richard John Grayson and you have a stuffie called Peanuts."
"You broke Father's chandelier after using it to swing on because you were so bored living in the manor prior to being Robin and he hardly paid attention to you. The weapon was dropped completely along with his glare. The colour drained from his face, giving him a sickly glow.
"S-so you are my family. This is so weird but this is Gotham. It's a weird city. Of course, this would happen," Robin replied. "Did Batman make you heroes too?" They nodded. "Interesting. Do you think you could take me to Batman? I don't have a comm unit." Jason nodded reaching out his hand. Sure the kid could look after himself but he thought the offer would give him some comfort. Also, he'd heard plenty of stories about him wandering off without a second thought and only being found hours later that he didn't want to risk letting him out of his sight. It was so surreal to see him like this. Dick was innocent-looking as an adult but as a child, it was like it was tenfold. Robin took it cautiously and they began to walk back home. Someone out there had done this to him and they probably wanted him alone to finish whatever plan they had.
"This is so fucked up," Jason muttered. Robin was using their arms to swing happily and he laughed brightly at Jason's colourful language like he didn't have a care in the world.
"Language Todd but I agree," Damian replied. "Do you think - GRAYSON STOP USING MY ARM LIKE THAT - this is permanent?" Robin immediately let go of his arm and ran around to the other side of Jason at the outburst.
"I hope not or one of us will have to be Nightwing from now on and I'm not down to wear that tight of a suit. Plus there'll be two Robins like when I was younger and let me tell you it was rather annoying when some villain came after the wrong one with a vendetta." Damian groaned and crossed his arms, already hating that idea. He'd already fought with Tim for the title and he didn't know if his standing was as good as the original title holder.
"I am not sharing. We're going to sort this out."
"You know you scared him right?" Jason asked, picking up Robin. The younger didn't protest to the action. Actually, it looked like he preferred being in his arms rather than on the ground.
"No he didn't," he protested lightly. The small shake in his voice didn't help his case.
"Then why did you run away when he shouted at you?" Robin opened his mouth to defend himself but he closed it finding that to be the truth. Damian did scare him.
"I am great with children," Damian said in disbelief.
"You most certainly are not," Robin muttered. Jason laughed and fist-bumped him.
"Nice one Mini Dick," he laughed. They ignored the huff from Damian and carried on walking.
