Heartbeat
Two kids who grew up on the same street laughed and played and sung the gospel together. They were in love in an easy, free kind of way. Easy spirits flowed as one and joined like a lock and key.
The boy promised the girl that he would never leave her. He told her, "I will love you as long as my heart still beats."
By the age of eight, the girl had to leave and one of the spirits had drifted away.
Apart, they grew as two separate forces of nature, both strong and independent but neither completely whole.
Nine years after the girl had moved away, she had came back to the same old school she'd grown up near. In high school, some people knew the girl, but others did not. The girl met old friends and new, but didn't stop her search till she found the boy.
For six days the boy didn't speak to her, but only sent short glances. Maybe he hadn't recognized her, the girl thought and tried hard to believe.
The girl spent hours in her room searching through old boxes and finding the letters they had written each other years ago. She still had pictures from trips they had been on together and late night dance recitals where he had showed up just to bring her flowers.
She smiled.
She had a small, priceless, romance but she was overcoming the fact it was over. I mean, he didn't even remember her.
The next day at school, she turned the combination of her locker and opened it. Inside lay colorful daisies, her favorite, with a note.
I'll love you as long as my heart still beats.
The girl stared at the note with a sweet smile. She looks away from her locker and sees the boy, smiling right down the hall from her with the goofy grin she could never forget.
Right there she looked into his eyes and realized her love had not died, just like the beating of their hearts.
