19 - Skeletons

My body has been dozing in and out of sleep since the rockets were sent to the sky in hopes that the Ark would see them. No one deserved to die. With Raven's help, we were able to send the rockets built from pieces of her dropship. All we could do was hope that we sent the rockets up in time.

The last thing I remember is falling asleep by the fire while everyone went to their tents. I had a tent with Octavia, but I just felt like being alone for a bit. The thought of my parents possibly being part of the group killed if we didn't act fast enough terrified me. Of course, I only saw them when I was a baby. I don't remember anything about them.

Something hard nudges my shoulder and I feel myself stir awake. I sleepily rub my eyes while sitting up to see Bellamy standing above me with a torch. Dirt and dead leaves stick to my clothes and skin before I quickly brush them off.

"Have you seen Octavia?" He demands.

"What? No." I sleepily climb to my feet, making sure I knocked all of them dirt off of me. "Unless she was in my dreams without me knowing about it-"

"It's not funny." Bellamy rudely snaps.

I frown at his harsh tone. Is there ever a time when he's not being a dick?

"Octavia is missing." Bellamy grabs my arm and forcefully makes me walk in the opposite direction of the fire. "And I need your help. Everyone already took a weapon and we're doing a search party."

Okay, wow. Bellamy is being serious here. Octavia wouldn't just up and leave camp like this. Sure, Octavia tends to break the rules, but it's still night. She wouldn't go off on her own this late and then not return.

I yank my arm out of his hold once we reach a group of people, who are all staring up at the sky. Our eyes follow their gazes to the night sky to see some sort of meteor shower.

"It's so beautiful." Someone comments from the crowd.

Jasper comes up to stand beside me.

Realization dawns on me. "They didn't work."

"They didn't see the flares." Raven joins the rest of us.

Bellamy side glances at me. "A meteor shower tells you that?"

I shake my head at him. I feel Jasper's warm hand slide into mine when he realizes what it is. "It's not a meteor shower, it's a funeral." I swallow the lump in my throat. "Hundred of bodies being returned to the Earth from the Ark."

"This is what it looks like from the other side." Clarke adds with a sullen look. She turns to Raven, who is right behind her. "They didn't get our message."

Bellamy hangs his head and turns away.

Raven storms forward at Bellamy with fire in her eyes. "This is all because of you!"

Clarke and Finn rush after her to stop her from doing any damage to him. Oddly enough, I find myself moving to stand closer to Bellamy.

Bellamy holds up two fingers towards her as he talks, "I helped you find the radio."

"Yeah, after you jacked it from my pod and trashed it!" Raven shouts back to him, restrained by Clarke and Finn.

I hold a hand out to keep her from getting any closer, "Yeah, he knows. Now, he has to live with it."

Bellamy looks from the sky to all of us. "All I know is that my sister is out there and I'm gonna find her." His head turns in my direction. "You coming or what?"

"Yeah." I nod my head.

"Then what are we waiting for?" Bellamy raises his voice to speak to everyone else. "Move out!"

Everyone starts to head for the trees to begin searching for Octavia, everyone except for Clarke, Finn, Jasper, Raven, and myself.

"We have to talk to them. Three hundred won't be enough. The oxygen level will just keep dropping." Clarke speaks up. "And if we don't tell them that they can survive down here, they'll kill more people. They have to."

Jasper's left hand tugs on my arm, "Guys, they're leaving. We gotta go." He holds the torch in his right hand and picks up a weapon from the ground.

Finn moves towards the two of us before stopping in front of Raven. "I gotta do this. And you should stay and fix the radio, okay?"

"Fix it? The transmitter's smashed. Unless there's a parts depot down here, we're not talking to the Ark." Raven tells him.

I bend down and pick up a spear from the ground. It's still night out. Who knows what's out there in those woods?

Clarke is silent for a few seconds before she locks eyes with Finn. "Art supply store." She angles herself towards Raven. "I know a place you might be able to get a transmitter."

Raven glances back and forth between Clarke and Finn, trying to figure out what they are acting so odd. "Great. It looks like you're coming with me instead."

"Finn?" Jasper calls out to our friend. "We're not gonna find her without you."

Finn looks at the two of us. I nod my head in agreement. Finn is a great tracker. We need him to help us.

"Be careful." He tells Raven and Clarke. He barely makes a step to join the two of us before Raven stops him. I heave a sigh out of annoyance. We don't know where Octavia is. We don't have time for this.

"Hey," Raven steps up to him. She quickly kisses him. "I love you."

"I love you, too." Finn says back after a few prolonged seconds. He nods to the two of us and we begin our trek through the trees.

Once we are out of earshot, I say, "You're playing in dangerous waters, Finn."

Finn easily keeps up with Jasper and me. "What are you talking about?" He grabs the spear out of my hand.

I roll my eyes. "Raven and Clarke." I tell him, knowing he understands what I'm trying to say. "Don't think people haven't noticed the way you and Clarke got closer and, now, Raven is here. If you don't fix things soon, you're going to be screwed-"

"Look! Over here!" Someone shouts from nearby.

The three of us share a look before sprinting in the direction of the shouting. I'm able to move more agilely through the trees and bushes without the spear in hand. We break through a line of trees to see a hill and one of the guys holding a lantern.

Bellamy jogs up to the guy. "What is it?"

"Right there." He points to a rope in a bush down below. "You see it?"

"Is that Octavia's?" Someone else asks.

Several other people break through the line of trees with torches and weapons in hand to see what we found.

Bellamy holds his hand out. "Rope."

Finn walks over to him. "What are you doing?"

"We need the rope to get back up." Bellamy tosses part of the rope down the steep hill. "Flashlight." Once he has a flashlight in hand, he proceeds to go down the hill with the rope in hand. He grabs the material out of the bush. "It's hers! I'm going all the way down."

Jasper and I share a quick look, already knowing what each other has planned. He hands the torch to Finn and places a hand on the small of my back. I pick up the rope first. Careful of my foot placement, I begin to move down the hill with Jasper right behind me. The two of us stay close in case one of us trips.

Jasper slips on wet leaves and ends up jumping to the bottom instead of bumping into me. I grip the rope tighter in my hands, realizing just how slippery it is. When I'm about three feet away from the bottom, my right shoe slips against something went and I feel myself start to fall. I try to jump like Jasper did.

My left foot catches on a bush. That's all it takes for my body to fly forward and my legs give out from underneath me. I slam into the ground hard as I roughly roll down the rest of the hill. Jasper quickly stops me once I hit the bottom.

"Wren, are you okay?" Jasper worriedly grabs my hands to pull me to my feet.

A soft groan floats off of my tongue. His hands brush off the dirt and leaves that I rolled through. I nod my head, wincing at a small shot of pain in my left cheek. I lift my hand up to feel my cheek to see dark red blood on the tips of my fingers.

Jasper quietly curses under his breath. He uses a piece of his shirt to wipe the blood off of my cheek. "It's just a small cut."

I hold onto his arm, slightly dizzy from all of the rolling. "I'm okay."

Without warning, Finn jumps down and nearly slams into me if it wasn't for my brother pulling me away. I duck when I see the torch in his hand. Why in the hell would you jump down with a torch in your hand?

"Sorry." Finn mumbles.

I walk over to where Bellamy is crouched down by a small rock. Jasper and Finn do the same. The small rock has tiny hints of blood on them.

Bellamy looks over at me. "Someone else was here."

"The prints are deeper going that way." Finn points out. Large shoe prints are easily seen in the dark dirt.

"He was carrying her." I reach out to touch the blood on the rock until I see that Bellamy already touched it. I grab his wrist to examine the blood. It's still wet.

Someone else jumps down from the hill.

"If they took her, she's alive." Jasper whispers with hope heard in his voice. "Like when they took me."

All of us push off from the ground to follow the tracks. If that blood is still wet, they can't be too far. The rest of the search party joins us at the bottom of the hill. Finn leads the way for us with his torch in hand.

Bellamy throws up an arm to stop me from walking. A question forms on my lips until I see what lays ahead of us. Skeletons are hung up on trees in every direction.

"I don't speak Grounder, but I'm pretty sure this means keep out." Finn shares, gawking at the skeletons.

"Let's get out of here. It's crazy." Someone starts to retreat. Several others join in with him, leaving.

"Go back if you want." Bellamy calls out to everyone. "My sister, my responsibility." He continues to walk forward through all of the skeletons.

Jasper hesitates for a second. Deep in my mind, I wonder if he is considering turning back around with the others until he says, "I'd walk into hell to find her."

I watch my brother in awe. I'd be blind if I haven't noticed the little crush he has for Octavia, but I didn't know he'd be so determined. With most of the party gone, I am quick to follow behind Bellamy and my brother.

"I think we just did." Finn keeps up with me.

Bellamy glances back over his shoulder and I can see the slight surprise in his eyes when he sees the three of us following him. The path through the trees has skeletons hanging everywhere we look. We really are going to go through hell to find Octavia.

XXXX

Long time no update on this. Sorry about that. I'm trying to get better at updating my stories, especially this one. I've missed writing about Bellamy and Wren.

Nearly at 2000 words, so I figured I'd end this chapter here and start on the next one. Maybe you'll get another update tonight.

Question: What did you think?

So, yeah!
