39 - War

"We've got twenty-five rifles with twenty rounds each, give or take. Roughly five hundred rounds of ammo." Bellamy shares with everyone in the dropship. His right hand holds the radio while his arms are folded over his chest.

I nod my head toward Raven, who has been sitting in one of the chairs ever since two guys helped her inside. "While you two were gone," I address Finn and Clarke. "we made some improvements. Thanks to Raven, the gully is mined."

Bellamy points to the table in front of us. He used the materials we had to make a smaller replica of the camp and the foxholes. This was the easiest way to show everyone where they were to be during the fight when the Grounders come for us.

"Partially mined." Raven speaks up with a low groan. Her face scrunches up from the pain radiating all throughout her body. With the bullet still in her, she is forced to deal with the pain until we can get it safely out of her. "Thanks to Murphy."

"Still," Bellamy keeps his gaze on the replica version of the camp. "It's the main route in. If the Grounders use it, we'll know."

I pick a small cylinder from the table. "She, also, built grenades." I hold the small grenade in my hand to show the others before carefully setting it back down. "It's not many, but--"

"Again, thank you, Murphy." Raven interrupts.

"We'll make them count," Bellamy finishes my train of thought. He gestures to the outside of the wall with the radio clenched between his fingers. "If the Grounders make it through the front gate, gun and grenades should force them back."

Clarke raises a brow when she doesn't hear the two of us continue with our plan for the attack. She glances between us, half expecting us to add something else. "And then?" She asks.

We glimpse at each other from the corner of our eyes. Bellamy and I knew what we were getting ourselves into when discussed going to war with the Grounders. We tried to prepare ourselves as much as we could. Bellamy and I knew nothing about how to go to war, but it was easier to make decisions and everything when we worked together. I liked to think that we were the best co-leaders this camp could have.

"Then we close the door and pray." Raven states, earning everyone's attention again.

Clarke turns her head toward her with enlarged eyes. "And pray what? That the ship keeps them out? Because it won't." She sharply whirls around to stare at us, waiting to see what we have to say.

I knew Clarke was right. We were only doing the best we could with what we have. The gears in my mind begin to grind as I start to think of something that could help us.

"Then let's not let them get through the gate." Bellamy glances at me before talking into the radio, "All foxholes, listen up. Keep your eyes and ears open. Inflict casualties, as many as possible. You can hold them off long enough to make them turn back. That's the plan."

"That's always your plan," Finn comments after Bellamy finishes speaking into the radio. "Just like the bomb at the bridge."

My eyes automatically narrow in response to Finn. An idea comes to me when I peer down at the floor of the dropship. Something that Raven had said after she had been trying to open the door to save Bellamy and me.

"Damn right. You got a better idea?" Bellamy retorts.

Clarke softly shakes her head. "It can't be that simple."

My fingers curl around the underside of the table as I nod to Raven, gaining her attention. "When you were under the dropship, trying to find a way to open the door, you said there's fuel in the rockets, right? Enough to build one hundred bombs?"

"I, also, said we've got no gunpowder left." She remind me.

I shake my head from side to side. "I don't want to build a bomb." My head tilts to the right and I shoot Bellamy a grin. "I want to blast off."

The corner of Raven's lips lift up as she understands what I want to do. "Draw them in close, fire the rockets, a ring of fire."

"Barbecued Grounders. I like it." Bellamy smiles back in realization.

"Will it work?" Finn asks her.

Raven thinks it over for a second before replying, "The wiring's a mess down there, but yeah. You give me enough time, I'll cook them real good."

We're on our last hope here. Bellamy and I have been keeping everyone hard at work while we wait for the Grounders and try to give Raven enough time to work on the rockets. I was inside of the dropship when Raven claimed she couldn't feel her legs. The bullet is in her spinal cord and she's bleeding internally.

Finn sneaked out of camp to find more coagulant from Lincoln's cave to use to slow the bleeding. Without Raven, no one else can fire off the rockets. She's our one shot for this war.

My gun has been draped over my back ever since I told Bellamy I would be assisting Miller and Monroe in their foxhole. We need all hands on deck. The rest of the foxholes have three gunners in them. I wasn't going to make Miller and Monroe be on their own when we both know that they could use my help.

Technically, Octavia was assigned to this foxhole, which is the whole reason I declared I'd bee joining them. I knew Octavia wouldn't wait around in a foxhole. She had her sword and she plans on using it.

I tilt my head to the side when I hear a faint drum noise in the distance. "Did you hear that?" I whisper to Miller and Monroe. My hands wrap around the barrel of the gun and bring it in front of my body, dropping to a half crouch beside him.

"Drums." Miller peers into his scope for any signs of Grounders.

I copy his actions. "They're here."

Behind us, we can hear everyone in camp beginning to fall into their positions, ready for the Grounders. Footsteps come from somewhere behind us, yet none of us turn around, already knowing that it was Bellamy.

"Where's Octavia?" He asks as soon as he rests his gun on the side of the foxhole. Bellamy crouches down between the Miller and me.

"She left five minutes ago." Miller shares with him, keeping his eyes on the perimeter through the scope. He half shrugs a shoulder.

"Didn't say where to." I add, sneaking a peek at Bellamy to see him already looking back.

Miller's head pops up when he adds, "She thinks she's a damn samurai."

I crack a smile. He wasn't wrong. Octavia somehow became exquisite with her sword. There was no doubt in my mind that Lincoln helped her with it, along with learning on her own.

I squint one eye and peer through the scope on my gun. There's nothing out there between the trees. Grounders are exceptional at hiding in the woods, though. They don't want us to see them until they want to.

After everything that has happened to us down here, I still couldn't believe that I am holding an assault rifle in my hands, planning on shooting any Grounders that come into my line of sight. The person I am today is not the same person I was when we first landed here.

The ground changes you. It can either change you for the better, like Bellamy and me, or for the worse, like Murphy. No one would stay how they were when all of us were still on the Ark. Everyone goes through something hard down here. It's inevitable.

"You see anything?" I ask everyone. My finger rests gently on the trigger, just waiting to use the few bullets I have.

"No," Monroe answers from the other side of Bellamy, anxiety laced in her words. "What the hell are they waiting for?"

"The longer they wait, the better." Bellamy speaks up. He shares a worried look with me, knowing we're all screwed if Raven can't get the rockets to work or dies before she can do it. "This is all about buying time for Raven."

Sterling's voice comes over the radio, unexpectedly. "I see them. They're moving! I count two, three- no, wait, there's more. I don't know, man. There's too many of them."

A single shot echoes throughout the trees. My hands grip tighter around the rifle, carefully searching for any signs of Grounders. The reality of all of this hits me, like, a ton of bricks. We're at war. We need to survive.

"Who was that?" Bellamy demands, reaching for the radio.

"Sterling," I answer him.

"Sterling, I think." Miller states a couple of seconds after I do.

I nod my head at Bellamy. "South foxhole."

Bellamy nods back before speaking into the radio, "South foxhole, report now."

More gunfire sounds in the distance, sending the hairs on the back of my neck and arms to stand up. If they could see Grounders near them, then why can't we see any?

"Yeah, yeah." Sterling's voice returns to the radio. "We're okay. They didn't attack. It's like- It's like shooting at ghosts."

"There!" Monroe raises her voice and her eyes grow wide.

I stare straight ahead, just in time to see a Grounder dart from one tree to the next. They don't even look in our direction.

"I see them!" Monroe shouts, firing her weapon.

Miller shoots at the few Grounders dashing between the trees. No, something's not right here. This doesn't make sense. They should be attacking us.

I pull my finger away from the trigger and shout at the two, "Stop! Stop! Hold your fire!"

"Hold your fire!" Bellamy orders

Monroe pulls back on the trigger, only to have her gun click in response.

"Reload. Now." I command them.

They shouldn't have fired at the Grounders unless they were attacking us. We cannot afford to be wasting bullets right now.

On my other side, Miller goes to reload his gun until his face pales. "Those were our last clips."

Monroe shifts on her feet, nervously. "We should- We should fall back."

I shake my head, "We can't."

"If this position falls, they'll walk right to the front door." Bellamy replies. He nods his head at me.

My fingers clench around the gun in my hands. The guard at our foxhole is down to us. Miller and Monroe used their bullets already. Everyone else is still firing at the Grounders darting between the trees.

"I don't see anyone. They're too fast." Someone says over the radio.

"I hit- I hit them. I think I hit them."

They aren't attacking. Why would they not be attacking us? Unless they want us to waste our bullets.

"They're everywhere! Harper, get down!" Jasper's frantic voice comes through over the radio. The next words to leave his mouth send a trail of goosebumps down my spine. "We need backup!"

As if Bellamy knew what I was going to do, he wraps his left arm around my waist and stops me from whirling away from wall of our foxhole. "Wren, no." His hold on me tightens as I begin to squirm.

"That's my brother!" I raise my voice to him. I try to shake his grip off of me. If Jasper needs backup, then I'm going to be the one to help him out. That's what he would do for me.

"The west woods are mined, Wren," Bellamy reminds me. "He'll--"

The sound of an explosion goes off from the west woods. I still in Bellamy's hold, anxiously waiting to hear my brother's voice return on the radio. I need to know he's okay. The arm around my waist stays curled around my body with my back pressed against Bellamy's chest, the gun held in his right hand.

"Raven, our mines actually worked!" Jasper yells through the radio, happily.

I sigh in relief, thankful to hear the mines worked and he's okay. When Bellamy hears me, his hand slowly drops down from my waist, knowing I won't race off. Jasper will be okay since the mines work. The Grounders wouldn't dare try to approach their foxhole.

"Jasper, we need you in the dropship right now." Clarke announces from their radio in the dropship.

Bellamy is quick to respond to her, "Negative. We can't give up the west woods."

I frown at the radio in his hands. Why would they need Jasper in the dropship with them? Without a moment of hesitation, I snatch the radio out of Bellamy's hand, accidentally pressing down on the button as I say, "The west woods are mined, Bellamy. The Grounders just figured that out." I direct to Jasper. "Jasper, get in there. Go help them."

I automatically feel better knowing Jasper would be safe in the dropship instead of in the west foxhole. I hand the radio back to Bellamy with a look on my face, daring him to go against my decision.

Another explosion sounds from the west woods. The Grounders in that area will heighten our chances of winning if they keep running into mines.

"All gunners, listen up." Jasper speaks into the radio. "The Grounders are not attacking. They're making us waste bullets. Don't soot when they're running laterally."

Once again, I grab the radio out of Bellamy's hand. "Jasper's right," I announce to the other gunners. "Do not fire until you're sure it's attack."

Bellamy snatches it back out of my hand to add, "Repeat, do not fire until you are sure."

We nod at each other in agreement. We finally learned how to respect each other's decisions.

My fingers wrap around Bellamy's and I press down on his finger to say one last thing into the radio, "Jasper, Harper, I'm coming to you. Do not leave your foxhole until I'm there."

"Got it." Jasper replies.

My hand lingers on Bellamy's before I draw back completely. I loop my gun over my back and make a move to race out of our own foxhole. There is no way I'm going to let Jasper and Harper run back to camp without someone covering them.

A hand wraps around my lower arm, careful to avoid hurting my wrist. Bellamy locks eyes with me. "Be careful, Princess."

I stare back into his dark brown eyes, pressing my lips together and barely bobbing my head up and down once. "You, too." I breathe. I softly smile and add, "Sunshine."

Without another word, I dart out of the foxhole, staying low to the ground and running to the tunnel closest to us. I dart in the tunnel, racing through it back to camp, unable to stop thinking about how Bellamy's fingers brushed over my skin before I took off.

Several campers move out of my way as I jump back to the ground. I sprint to the other side of camp toward the west wall. Clarke and Raven need my brother for some reason and I am going to make sure he gets there safely. They are probably both out of ammo.

I dive into the west side tunnel, discreetly moving through it. I hold the gun in my hands, prepared to shoot at any Grounder that gets too close to my brother. I would do anything for Jasper. Once out of the tunnel, I jump over a fallen down tree and slide across the slick ground into the foxhole.

Harper and Jasper spin around at the same time.

I show them my gun and nod my head back toward the tunnel. "Let's go."

"My sister is so badass." Jasper chuckles.

I wave for Harper to run in front of me. "I learn from you." I joke with him.

The three of us run close to the ground. I scan the area around us, checking to make sure there's no Grounders nearby. Harper races into the tunnel first. Jasper and I follow close behind her.

"I'm out of ammo!" Bellamy shouts from the radio in Jasper's hand. "Requesting backup, now!"

My blood runs cold. They were just doing fine when I left them. Knowing what I was thinking, Jasper hands the radio over to me once we jump down from the tunnel.

I point to the dropship. "Get to the dropship! Now!" I order my brother.

"Sterling, do you copy?" Bellamy asks.

Jasper glances between Harper and I before making a break for the dropship. He's needed more in there than he is out here.

With a shaking hand, I call out for Bellamy on the radio, "Bellamy?" I share a worried look with Harper. "Bellamy, are you okay? Do you copy?"

A couple of seconds pass. I hastily begin to walk toward their tunnel with Harper right by my side. Why the hell is he not answering? I break into a run, terrified.

"I'm okay." Bellamy's voice sounds through the radio. "Do not come back. Stay behind the walls."

Was he seriously giving me orders now? I race to the tunnel, abruptly stopping when I hear Bellamy talking to the other foxholes. He should know better than to think that I would go against his orders.

"I saw...No, stand your ground. If they take the gate, we're all dead."

Miller races through the tunnel, slamming into Harper and myself. Monroe only a few steps behind him. She easily darts around us.

"Miller?!" I gawk at him. Where the hell is Bellamy?

His fingers latch around my arm and drags me over to the platform against the front of the wall. Shouts from the Grounders come from outside of the walls.

"What happened to Bellamy?" I demand as I climb up on the platform. I rest my gun on the wall.

"They've broken through! There's hundreds of them! They're heading for the gate! Game over, man!"

Hundreds of Grounders dash toward the wall. Every where I look, there's Grounders heading right for us. Miller grabs a gun from one of the younger gunners. Harper runs up alongside one of the gunners, who is struggling to stop their hands from shaking. She takes the gun from them and they gratefully nod at her.

The three of us stand side by side, shooting at the hundreds of Grounders outside of the walls. I follow one that is getting too close and press down on the trigger. The bullet slices through the air, killing the Grounder instantly with a head shot. They drop to the ground.

"Where's Bellamy?" I demand from Miller.

"He's with Octavia!" He shouts back over the yells from the Grounders and gunfire.

XXXX

I decided to stop this chapter here. It's over 3,000 words and I didn't want it to be a super long chapter. The next one will pick up right where this one let off. I'm actually going to go write it right now. If you're lucky, it will be up tonight.

The next chapter will probably be a long one, too. Maybe even longer than this one. From right where I ended it, there's only 16 minutes and 35 seconds left of the final episode.

I just love Wren so much. I'm going to miss writing about her.

Fair warning, it's going to get emotional in the next chapter.

Question: How do you think this story will end?

So, yeah!
