ALGEBRA PROBLEMS

"ARGHHH!" Astrid yelled angrily throwing her book and notebook down to the floor with a loud thud.

"I hate you!" She stated coldly looking or more like giving her book and notebook a death glare before crossing her arms and turning around in her chair so her back was facing the fallen things.

"Ow! That hurts." A familiar voice from behind pretended to sound hurt. It was no other than her nerd but goodlooking boyfriend, Hiccup. Not like she wasn't a goodlooking nerd herself.

She turned around only to see him holding his right hand on his chest faking a pout.

"What are you doing here? I thought you have Science class?" She questioned.

"I miss my lady and I wanted to see her. Plus, I was the first to finish the examination so Mr. Gobber let me out early." He explained.

"How'd you know that I'd be here?" She asked.

"First, you are the president of the English Club and it's only natural to found you here in the Speech Laboratory where half of the room is full of novels and books about speeches, languages and declamations."

"Good point."

"May I know why is your Algebra textbook and notebook are on the floor? I thought you love books?" He queried.

"Yes I do, but not textbooks in Mathematics! It's too much pain in the neck. More like pain in the brain." She complained.

"Aww... come on, it can't be that bad. Let me see the lessons you're studying." He said giving his famous lopsided smile,

"Fine." She gave up sighing.

Hiccup picked up the thrown books on the floor and handed it to Astrid before sitting next to her. Now, they were facing each other.

"Let's start with something easier. I'm going to show you how to solve the equation first." Hiccup said. He wrote an equation on a piece of paper and handed it to Astrid.

         2
(X+7)

"The first thing that you need to do is to square the first term of the binomial." He instructed.

                2
"So put X    here."

    2
(X

He wrote.

"Next, you have to get twice the product of the first term which is X and the last term which is 7."

   2
(X+14X

"Lastly, you have to square the last term."

    2
(X   + 14X + 49)

"Now you have the product of a "square of binomial" which is also what we call the "perfect square trinomial."" He stated. "It's easy, now you go and give it a try."

Hiccup wrote a set of equations on another sheet op paper and handed it to Astrid.

◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇

It has been a few minutes since Astrid started answering the set of given equations but for Thor's sake she still can't find the answers and she's getting a little frustrated about it.

"ARGHHH! I can't answer all of these. No fair, Hiccup. You gave me an easy example that you answered and now you're making me answer abstruse questions. How could you do that to your own girlfriend?" Her voice raised.

"It's just the way it's suppose to be. Plus, the questions are not that hard." He reasoned.

"Then you admit that these equations that you gave me are difficult."

"Trust me Astrid, those equations are a pice of cake." He encourage and she started answering again.

An hour has passed and she haven't finished answering the five equations yet.

"I give up." She said and placed the pen and paer on her desk with a thud.

"Oh come on m'lady, I gave you those questions because I believe you can do it." He tried to persuade her but failed nonetheless.

"Enough with your goody-goody talk Hiccup. It's easy for you to say because you're only the one in the whole school wo was awarded "Best in Mathematics" not to mention "Best in Science" and a lot of other awards involving Math and Science for Thor knows how many times. Everything, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, all those formulas, you're the best guy at it. Fishlegs being the second one so please don't tellme that it's easy cause it's really not. Here's a proof if you don't believe me." She took out a peper attached within her book and handed him a test paper result she had earlier that day.

"I got a C. Hiccup. C! I've never got a grade like that in my entire life thanks to that ALGEBRA subject!" She shouted and stood up from her seat in disbelief.

"Astrid it's just a C. You still pass." Hiccup said.

"Are you kidding me Hiccup? Just a C? What would my Uncle Finn say? You know me Hiccup, I'm not the kind of student who wants to be the number 1 in class but I care about my grades and my only goal was to not get a grade lower than A. My future depends on my grades."

"I'm sorry." He stood up and hugged her from behind resting his head on her shoulder.

"It's okay. It's not just the grade that I'm frustrated about. It's also Ms. Mala, she was so nice and a great teacher. She's my teacher in Algebra and she will be leaving the school in less than a month and I wanted to show her that I payed attention during her class and that I learned something from her. Having a good grade to show her is just having something to show her how much I appreciate all her hardwork teaching us. I just want to let her know that I'm going to miss her and that I'll never forget what she taught us." She explained, her voice cracking up a bit ever so often.

But she couldn't help it. Mala was the kindest teacher she ever had, aside from Gobber and Hiccup of course. She never gets mad when a student asks questions about her subject. She answered it all gladly. She was the kind of teacher who wouldn't get tired of teaching until the students finally understood the lesson and her leaving, Astrid just couldn't imagine life without a fun and understanding teacher.

Hiccup didn't say a word, all he did was pulled her in a sweet embrace that always manage to calm her down.

"Let's get back to studying." Surprisingly, Astrid was the one who said it.

Astrid went out of her Math class with a smile on her face. She immediately went to the Science Laboratory where she knew she would find Hiccup.

"Hiccup! I did it! I got an A+! Miss Mala is so happy when I showed her my score. Thanks for helping me understand the lessons better." She jumped around him happily like a 7-year-old little girl who saw an ice cream parlor.

"That's great Astrid." He stated and she hugged him excitedly. Her smile turned into a frown when he didn't seem happy about it as much as she does.

"Hiccup?"

"Hiccup, what's wrong?" She asked and he handed her a piece of paper. She lokked at it. It was a test result.

"Yeah, I know, I'm bad at English." He said.

"Didn't know that the President of Mathematics and Science Club would get a C on English. Don't worry the President of English and Combat Club, not to mention your one and only girlfriend, is here to help you." She chuckled.

He smiled as well. They were teammates. If one gets down, the other one helps.

End.

Maxim:

"We hate things that makes our life difficcult or we simply don't understand them. But once we do, we began to appreciate it and hatred turns to love."
