Three
"This guy had a really interesting double life." Daniel said when we went into the coroner's room the following morning. "I haven't finished my analysis yet, but I can make you some spoilers of my final report. It looks like he had practiced sex just before the accident, there are basal cells in his genitalia. He had smoked weed and drunk alcohol, he was so high he didn't even notice the car. His lungs were damaged because of the weed, and they're old damages. "
"We'll have to be extra careful when we talk to his family. What about the cause of the death?"
"That's not hard to say." Daniel replied "Whoever ran over him knew what he or she was doing. He literally flew over the car and landed on the other side. He hit with head in the ground, he had a traumatic brain injury that killed him right in the moment. "
"So, the murdered made sure Sampson didn't suffer." Mark asked
"I wouldn't say that, he didn't intend to fail. Need something else?" Dan answered putting his medical gloves on again.
"No, that will be all for now, Dan. Thanks." I replied
"See you."
"What do you think?" I asked when we left the coroner's office.
"I don't agree with Dan. It was a clean hit, and fast enough to provoke an instant death. "Mark insisted.
"And your feelings don't fail, I know. Well, let's talk to the family, it's almost eleven.
Al members of Sampson family were gathered in their living room when we arrived. Apart from the patriarch and his wife and victim's widow, there were two other women, Michael Sampson's sisters Debra and Stephanie.
"We were waiting for you, Detectives. Want a coffee?" Old Mr Sampson was behaving in quite a different way from the day before, he was all kindness and good manners.
"No, thanks, Mr Sampson. We'll talk to each one of you separately, is there a place where we could be?"
Mr Sampson seemed to be taken off guard by Mark's request but he managed to hide it."Yes, yes, you can use my office."
Mrs Sampson was the first one to be interviewed. She wore a black skirt and a dark grey blouse and had her dark hair done in a high bun. She had a discreet make up and kept a small white handkerchief between her hands.
"First of all, we're really sorry for your loss, Ma'am. We'll do our best to catch whoever killed your husband."
"Thanks," she said in an inaudible voice "I can't believe yet he's gone just like that. "She wiped some tears with the handkerchief. "He is...was a good man and an excellent husband and father, who could want to kill him?"
"Can you tell us what happened yesterday, was he nervous about something?"
"No, he behaved like any other day. We had breakfast and then he went to work, in the family company. He was one of the CEOs. I had some last details to take care of, for the gala at the Opera House and then went back home. We talked over the phone about three and he said he would go to the gala right from his job. He said he'd be there about seven but didn't show up, so I got worried and texted and called him."
"This is a quite delicate question, but we need to know. How was your relationship, did you argue about anything on the days before the accident?"
"When you're married there's always something to argue about, detective. But if you want to know if my husband and I didn't love each other, the answer is no. We deeply loved each other and as I told you, he was an excellent father and husband. And I will miss him as long as I live." Tracy Sampson looked right in our eyes as she said that.
"Do you have any idea why could he be in Bethesda? It's quite far from the company building."
"No, I wish I know. I've tried to find an answer to that. We have no friends or relatives there. The only possible reason is that one of his customers were there, that's all I can say to you. "
"This will be all for now, Mrs Sampson. But if you remember something else please contact us." Mark gave his card to the woman.
"I will, thanks Detectives. Do you want me to tell my father in law to come?"
Old Mr Sampson didn't give any new information, and neither did his daughters. Michael Sampson was a perfect man , a loving husband and father and a friendly son and brother, he had no enemies and everyone who met him would have the same opinion about him.
And yet...something wasn't so perfect in that picture perfect life.
