1150 years earlier~
"Jack!" "Jack wake up!" My eyes slid open and I rose up slow, like I was injured; actually, I was injured, but I was fine compared to the other people in this damned world. "Hey Earl" I reply finally "There's another batch of patients" Earl sighed. I simply whimpered in response and changed into my scrubs. Earl and I jumped on our bikes and zoomed along the highway that reeked of death and was scarred with the debris of a decade long missile war. I almost fell off my bike when I saw a five legged dog chase a yellow rat across the road. Animals had definitely become far more bizarre after the nuke hit. It's really not fair; animals get weird coloration and capabilities, but all us humans get is cancer, maybe an extra finger if we're lucky. We pull into the hospitals garage and swing open the long since shattered glass door. Ms. Robinson rolls past us on her wheelchair and says hi. I can't help but notice how pale she is and I know she isn't long for this world. I give a sad smile and say hi back.

Dusk sets in and I see the first stars begin to show. If there's one thing good about all the lights going out, it's that we get to see the cosmos in all its glory. I sling my pack over my shoulder and walk out the door startled by an old man staring at me. "Can I help you?" I ask him. "You are a doctor, correct?" He replies. I nod yes. He scratches his chin for a long while before speaking again "I'd appreciate it if you came with me right now" Oh great another crazy "It's getting dark, I should get home" He set down the duffel bag and unzipped it. He reached inside and what he pulled out, almost made me fall over. It was a pack of bacon. My jaw dropped. Before the war bacon was just something I ate to celebrate. But after the war, I didn't even think bacon still existed. "This whole pack is yours, if you follow me right now" I silently walked behind him and eventually we came to a luxurious mansion. I could see wide eyed faces behind the boarded up windows, staring at me, their new recruit.
