Outlands
Ding dong ding dong
Huh? "Wakey wakey sleepyheads" I could make out the old man standing at the end of the rows of bunk beds. He stood beside a bell and each ring reverberated through the enclosed space. I shakily stood up, followed by everybody else and the bell stopped, much to our delight. We marched like sleep deprived zombies and followed the old man. He gave each of us a fairly light duffel bag and continued down the hallway. We came to the same master bedroom that I had found the ring in and sat down beside the ring. The old man cleared his throat and began to speak "Welcome everybody, by now I'm sure you are wondering what exactly we are all doing here. I will tell you just that. This ring that stands before you is possibly the greatest invention of humankind. Theoretically it would allow instantaneous travel anywhere on the plane that is spacetime. However I've never actually tested it. This is why I need you. You will be my guinea pigs. Very sorry but science requires sacrifices. Guards restrain them!" The guards tackled all of us to the floor swiftly in the blink of an eye, and proceeded to wrangle us into a chokehold. "These ten electrodes will harness the raw power of the human brain and open a portal to untold worlds. The guards carried our writhing bodies to the electrodes, and placed each of them on us. The old man swaggered to a control panel and mashed on seemingly random buttons then pushed forward a huge lever. Beeps and flashes could be observed everywhere. The light fizzled and crackled with electricity. I heard tiny whispers in my head, and by the looks of it so did everybody else. One hundred whispers turned into one thousand, one thousand into a million, until our ears were filled with a sea of infinite voices. Then we started to see things. I can't describe what we saw exactly because we saw everything. My heartbeat rang through my ears and my head pounded. I saw a black outline at the edge of my vision and I proceeded to vomit. We were in a sea of whispers and vomit. A young woman's eyes rolled back into her head and blood streamed out of her nose. Her head hung limp on her shoulder. The ring began to spin and chromatic lightning filled the room. A bolt of lightning struck one of the guards and he vaporized, filling the room with the smell of burnt meat. The mansion shook, and a priceless vase fell from a shelf, shattering. The shards hung in the air suspended by a lack of gravity. The floor cracked and we no longer could tell which way was up or down. Massive chunks of the mansion floated in the storm. Entire rooms vanished then reappeared in a different place, until the sides of the mansion closed in on us, and all there was to see was an infinite one dimensional plane of darkness.
