Chapter 6
My hands were sweating like crazy while we ate. I kept rubbing them on my old jeans. We still had a few hours before we put our plan in motion, but I couldn't stop my heart from racing.
"Cieco, dear, are you feeling alright?" Leila's voice came from across the table. I nodded and continued to eat.
"Leila, where is Harold tonight?" Stacy made sure to keep Leila's attention so she wouldn't suspect anything. I wasn't that good at keeping big secrets.
"He is going out of town today. Your grandmother, his mom has fallen very ill. It was all so sudden. But he will be alright." I perked up. This would help our plan, it would be easier to grab everything.
"Oh, that's sad. I hope she's okay." I could tell Stacy was a bit more excited as well.
"Parker, how is your food?" Leila asked him.
"He said it was good, just in case you wondered," Stacy whispered to me. I rolled my eyes and ate more of my food.
"When you children are done, how about a movie night?" Leila asked.
"I'm feeling pretty tired already," I stretched and did a fake yawn.
"That's okay, how about you Parker and Stacy?" She sounded like a tour guide talking to a bunch of bored kids.
"Yeah, why not?" Stacy answered. I kicked her under the table.
"Ow, Cieco. What was that for?"
"What was what for?" I turned to face her, knocking over a glass of water on my way that splashed all over Leila.
"Oh my. I better go and change. I'll be right back, kids." Leila jumped up.
"Oh, I'm so sorry Leila. I didn't see it there," I apoligzed, being a little sarcastic.
"Cieco, what do you want? We both know you did that on purpose," Stacy lowered her voice so Leila couldn't hear from the other room.
"Operation Nolite? Did you forget?"
"No, just we won't be up all night and I'll have time to gather the food. The movie will distract her and I can sneak away," she said.
"Oh."
"Now you will come to the movie and distract her," she demanded right before Leila walked back to the table.
"Nice, unicorn onesie," Stacy said sarcastically.
"Oh thank you. I decided, why not have fun tonight!" Leila said energetically.
"Yeah."
"Can I join you tonight? I changed my mind, fun sounds better then sleep," I asked before anything weirder could happen.
"Sure, the more the merrier!" Leila answered. "Now go change into some pyjamas, I'll clear the table and set the movie up."
We all got up and went to our room. This was the perfect chance to edit the plan.
"So, I'll distract her while you grab food," I said as we entered the room.
"Yeah, but not yet," Stacy said.
"Okay, give me any random onesie," I sat down on a bed.
"Here," she paused and a big onesie landed on me. "You can be a uni-corgi," she giggled.
"A what?" I grabbed the onesie and made a disgusted face, trying to picture some ugly creature.
"It's cute, Cieco, no need to be disgusted."
"And what are you guys?" I felt for the zipper.
"I'm going to be a kangaroo, to help carry more snacks, and Parker is a dragon."
"What if we are all kangaroos? We can carry more food that way."
"Because there's only one kangaroo onesie, in my size."
"Sure," I roll my eyes.
"I'm going to change in the bathroom, I'll send you in after," Stacy's voice faded and a door shut.
"So, what do you want to talk about, Parker?" I asked, knowing I wouldn't get a response. I had a little hope in my gut, but nothing was said. I was about to just lay on the bed, waiting for Stacy to be done when a piece of paper was shoved in my hand. I felt over it and there were faint bumps.
"Is this braille?" I looked at him. He took my hand in his and put it on the paper. I read it.
'I wish I could talk with you and Stacy. I paid attention to your braille lessons and learnt how to write it for you. What's the point in writing if I can't talk to all my sisters? I love you.'
"Parker, that's so sweet! I love you so much," I hugged him and was on the verge of happy tears.
"Okay Cieco, your turn," Stacy grabbed my arm and dragged me to the bathroom.
"Do you need help getting changed?"
"Just because I'm blind, doesn't mean I need help," I smiled and shut the door.
I felt for the zipper and unzipped the onsie before changing into it. I put my hair into a ponytail and leaned on the counter. I closed my eyes and imagined. The bathroom wouldn't be some old, boring public restroom. It was some gorgeous nature themed bathroom. The cold tiles would be the colour of dirt and the walls would be a forest green. It would have painted trees and within those trees, there would be little birds. The bath and shower would be vintage and a light teal, not a boring white. And it would be flowing with water 24/7 and the water would look like crystals dancing o-
"Cieco, hurry up. It's Parkers turn," Stacy's voice interrupted my train of thought.
"Okay, coming," I sighed and picked up my clothes.
"We are going to pick the movie once Parker is changed," Stacy said as I entered the bedroom again.
"Okay," I responded. I wanted to go back to my wonderful fairytale, but I had to focus and pay attention.
A few minutes passed until we went downstairs again.
•••
"Okay children, what movie shall we watch? Peter pan, Aristocats or The Little Mermaid?" Leila asked upon us entering the T.V room.
"We haven't seen any of those," Stacy said.
"No? Well I guess it's a movie night tonight. We can watch them all!" Leila squealed with excitement.
"No, that's okay. Maybe just one, for now?" I answered a little quickly.
"Okay? Harold is gone for a few weeks, so we'll have plenty of time to watch them all."
"How fun," I said, feeling a little sorry for her that we wouldn't be staying.
"Cieco, would you like me to put on audio description?" Leila asked me.
"What's that?" I got comfy on my spot on the couch.
"Well, it describes what the characters are doing on T.V as it plays. It's for blind people, like you," she replied.
"Oh, no thank you. That might ruin Stacy and Parker's enjoyment,"
"Okay, suite yourself. And we will be watching Peter Pan tonight." I just nodded. I was antsy and really just wanted to start the plan.
•••
It had been about two hours. We finished Peter Pan and started watching The Little Mermaid. I was starting to get annoyed, Stacy hadn't gone to get the snacks yet. I kept giving her subtle hints.
"Stace, I'm hungry. Can you get me a few snacks from the kitchen?" I looked at her and glared.
"You can do it Cieco, don't be lazy," Leila answered for her.
"I'm blind, I wouldn't know where to look."
"There's braille signs on everything."
"I'm bringing Stacy with me." I stood up, grabbed Stacy's hand and stomped off.
"Cieco, we are probably missing some good parts," she said, trying to make me let go.
"I don't care! You have a duty," I turned to face her.
"Fine, I'll go do it," she sighed.
"Go." I pointed to the kitchen. She grumbled as she walked by and I just leaned against the wall.
I heard her curse to herself and mumble about how she wanted to watch the movie until she came back. She tapped me.
"Ihavethesnacks." I heard her mumble through a bag or something. I reached out my hand to grab it and let her talk again.
"I said, I have the snacks."
"Okay, give me some and go get more." I grabbed more from her until my hands were full. She cursed under her breath and grabbed more snacks.
"Okay, let's go. We can grab a bunch of money and the weapon after." She grabbed me and dragged me past the T.V room, to the bedroom.
"I grabbed the backpacks earlier, I'll come grab the money with you," I said, throwing the food I had on a bed.
"Okay," she said. She sounded very distant and she longed to go watch The Little Mermaid.
We finished organizing all the food into the bags and had gone downstairs to Harolds study room.
"It's locked," I sighed.
"Move it sis," Stacy said, pushing me out of the way and picked the lock. I don't know how she did it or what she did, but it worked.
"How much money do you think we can get from here?"
"We could get some checks, and forge Harold's signature. We could have millions amounts of money, billions even. We just have to keep adding 0's," Stacy quickly said. She was rushing and wanted to finish as quickly as she could.
"Okay, but grab some cash too, then grab the gun," I said.
"Okay."
It took a few minutes, but we finally had everything we needed.
"I learnt Harold's signature so now we can do anything," Stacy said, grabbing my hand and leading me to the bedroom again.
"Do you think we will need anything else?"
"Nope. I think we're good, now grab a bag of chips or something."
"Why?"
"We left to grab snacks, remember? Leila will get suspicious."
"Right." I grabbed a snack or two from our stash and headed downstairs to the T.V room.
"You guys took forever, it's finally the wedding," Leila said as we entered the room.
"Sorry, I had to use the bathroom. Let's just say I'm feeling sick," I tried to sound embarrassed.
"That's okay. Just sit and we can watch."
•••
I was laying in bed and trying to get some sleep. We had to be rested for the plan, but I couldn't sleep at all. I was wide awake.
"Stace, you awake?" I rolled over to face Stacy's bed.
"Yeah, I'm too excited to sleep."
"Same. It's still a few hours away, but I can't sleep at all."
"Want to go over the list?"
"Yeah, grab your flashlight."
"Okay. 'cmon."
I walked to her bed and sat down.
"Food?"
"Check," I responded.
"Money?"
"Check."
"Protection, or weapons?"
"Check," I snickered.
"You're disgusting. Clothes?"
"Wait what, when did we add that?"
"We need clothes Cieco, we can't be filthy," Stacy said.
"Okay, fine. Let's grab all of our clothes right now." I got up and went to the closet. I opened it carefully and grabbed a bunch of clothes.
"Here," I sighed, tossing them on Stacy's bed.
"We need more than that, plus those are your clothes. We all need clothes," Stacy got annoyed and grabbed the rest of the clothes. I grabbed the list and pen.
"You can't be the list checker. You can't see what you're crossing off," Stacy said, grabbing the list out of my hand.
"I know," I grumbled.
"Backpacks?"
"Check," I said and layed down on the bed.
"Okay, we have everything. Now we need rest," she said.
"I'm too lazy to move. You have to carry me if you want me gone," I made a dramatic scene and raised my hand to my forehead.
"Drama queen," she said. She grabbed my leg and dragged me off the bed gently. I kept my head raised so I wouldn't injure it and just relaxed while I was being dragged across the dirty floor.
"This is as far as you go. If you want to go on the bed, you have to get on yourself."
"Fine." I got up and dusted myself off. I shot her a dirty look while climbing under my covers and turning around to face the window. I shut my eyes and fell sound asleep.
•••
"Wake up Cieco, we slept in. We have to go now or else we are at risk of being caught," Stacy said while frantically shaking me awake.
"What?" I shot up and was instantly alert of all my surroundings.
"Okay, throw me some clothes and I'll change," I said and got up out of bed.
"Should we leave a note for Leila and say we are sorry?"
"No, that's a dumb idea. You work on opening the window."
"Okay, it might take a while though," she said after pushing me out of the way.
I changed while they were distracted and threw my pyjamas into my bag.
"Is it open yet?" I was growing impatient.
"I said it would take a while. Harold barred these shut and the lock isn't like a normal lock. We might have to go out the front door," she said. I could tell she was getting frustrated and I just backed away.
"Screw this, come on. We have to go out the front door," she said and grabbed my hand.
"Okay, we can do this. We will just have to run," I said confidently and let her lead me to the front door.
A few seconds after I said it, a freezing breeze hit my face.
"I-it's fre-freezing," I managed to say through chattering teeth.
"Tough it out Cieco, come one. We aren't far from the hospital," Stacy sounded angry, for no reason. She got angry for the most random things.
We kept walking and rarely stopped until we had gotten to the hospital. Stacy kept dragging me until we had entered the front doors. A wall of heat hit me and I let go.
"We are here," Stacy said and walked off to the front desk. I followed her footsteps to the desk.
"Hello," Stacy mumbled to the secretary.
"Hello. How can I help you?" A female voice answered.
"We would like to visit a patient."
"Sure, do you have an appointment? Or any legal guardians?' I could hear the judge in her voice as she asked her second questions.
"I'm watching my little brother and sister. Our parents are busy and allowed me to take them to visit our friend," Stacy said. She could tell the secretary was judging us too.
"Okay, I'll just need a parent signature on your visitors form," she paused and I heard some papers rustling. "Take these home to your parents," she said.
"No thanks, I have these," Stacy replied. I heard more paper rustling.
"Oh. Okay then, here's your visitors form you have to fill out before you can see your patient. I'll be here if you need me," the secretary said and shooed us away.
"What did you give her?" I asked Stacy as we sat down.
"A printed paper. It gives us consent to come here and I put Harold's signature so it looked official," she replied.
"What's on the visitor form?"
"Questions."
"Like?"
"I'll read them as I answer them, okay? Just shut up. This is stressful. What if we get caught?" She snapped at me. I gulped and just nodded.
"Your full names, middle name, first name then last name."
"Maud, Cieco, Nolite," I responded.
"I know that, I was already writing," she said.
"Okay, sorry."
"Spee, Parker, Nolite," she said to herself while writing it down.
"Parental guardians name? Vale, Stacy, Nolite."
"Never mind, you can just write," I stopped her.
"Thank you. I'll tell you when I'm done," She said. She sounded a little more calm.
It was very quiet. All I could hear was Stacy writing and although it was still very early in the morning, I could hear the streets starting to wake up. The traffic outside was faint, but it was growing. I could hear small conversations from other families and staff calming down people who were crying hysterically from losing a loved one. That wouldn't be me. I would protect Stacy and Parker at all costs.
Two arms wrapped around me and someone laid their head on my shoulder. I assumed it was Parker and I laid my head on his.
"Done. Now come on," Stacy stated and grabbed my hand.
"All done?" The secretary said as we walked up to her.
"Yes. Now can we please visit Hunter?" Stacy asked.
"Sure. What's his last name?"
"Anadu. Hunter Anadu," I answered before Stacy made her suspicious. She wouldn't know his last name.
"Anadu," she mumbled to herself. I assumed she was looking for a patient with his last name.
"Okay. Room 26. Go all the way down and turn left. It will be the second door on your right," she gave us directions and we set off.
We finally made it to the room. Stacy opened the door and I just stood in the doorway.
"Cieco, that you?" He said weakly.
"Hunter!" I ran to him and hugged him.
"Cieco. I thought you were gone for good," he hugged me back and we just stayed there.
"I thought I had lost you," my voice wavered and tears started to form in my eyes.
"I hope your new family is amazing," he said and wiped the tears from my cheeks.
"Yes. They are the best," I lied. I didn't want him to worry.
"Good. You deserve it."
"Hunter, what happened to you?"
"Well, I-"
"Stacy, Cieco and Parker. Your parents are here." The door slammed open and the secretary interrupted Hunter.
"What?" Stacy said.
"I called them, confirming their consent and they said no. They are here now," she responded.
"Nolites! You are fucking idiots! You will be chained to your beds and fed expired dog food!" My heart stopped and I started to sweat like crazy.
"Ha-Harold?"
Hey guys, I'm sorry this is late. I was having some technical difficulties and I forgot what day it was. Also I think I'm going to start posting every other Sunday. At least until schools out. School has just gotten crazy for me. Sorry for changing the schedule but I'm going to stick with this one. Once schools out, I'll go back to posting every Saturday. Until next time
