"He what?!" I exclaimed.
"We were drunk and stupid and it just kinda happened," she mumbled out, head hung low in shame.
"Don't worry it's ok," I tried to reassure her as I saw tears trail down her face. "Hey look at me," I demanded, holding her face and tilting it up, "It's ok."
She smiled at me, cleaning the tears from her cheeks, "I didn't mean anything I said earlier," she stuttered. "You're a good person."
I nodded, reassuring her, but I knew the truth, and the truth was always spoken when angry or drunk.
"I know," I lied, giving her a calming hug, "Well I think it's time we go to the next stage of a break up."
"Which is?"
Her question was answered when I took her to the cafeteria, heading to the deep freezer where all the cool beverages were kept.
Including ice cream.
We sat opposite each other, spoon in our hands as I opened the huge chocolate and vanilla ice cream tub.
We smiled contently as we dug in, Michie telling me atrocious stories about Raymond.
"He puts the cereal in first," she continued. I didn't see the problem in that but I just listened cause she needed to let it all out in order to move on.
"Ah I knew I wasn't the only one craving some frozen dessert," came Jaycee's squeaky voice, golden spoon in her hand.
That spoon didn't look like it belonged to the school. "Do you come here often?" I asked, directing my attention to her personal spoon.
"At least once or twice a week," she replied, scratching her hair guiltily. "May I join you guys?"
The response came from Michie, "Of course, the more the merrier."
She sat with us and we all attacked the ice cream, chatting and laughing.
I'm glad Michie was feeling better as she laughed to whatever corny joke Jaycee had said.
"Why are popsicles so snobby?" Jaycee asked, already cracking up at the joke.
"Why?" Came Michie's excited voice.
"Because they always have a stick up their butt," she bowled over laughing, along with Michie.
I personally didn't find the joke funny but I laughed along to humor them.
"It's getting late guys," I spoke, checking my watch to see it was almost dinner time, "They're gonna start placing dinner soon."
We got up ready to leave when the door banged open and two women stepped in. We quickly hid behind the tubs of ice cream in the deep freezer.
"These kids are always bloody hungry," we heard the first woman grunt out.
"Just get some more dessert and lock up once you're done," the second woman sighed.
The door was already open so she walked in grabbing two huge tubs of ice cream with her. Then she closed the door.
The thing about the deep freezer door was that it could only be open from the outside, kind of like those safe doors that protect money in a bank. So we were locked in.
Wasting no time I scurried to the door, banging on the solid metal intently, "Wait we're still in here!" I shouted.
Either she had already gone out the storage room or she was blatantly ignoring me.
"We're gonna die here," Jaycee screeched, cold air escaping her mouth. "We're gonna freeze to death."
"Is it a bad time to tell you guys I'm claustrophobic?" Michie's eyes widened as she started freaking out.
Then they both ran around the cold room like chickens.
"Calm down!" I screamed, lightly amused by their frantic state. I should've been scared too but their antic actions eased my fears and instead replaced them with slight amusement.
"Do any of you have phones?" I left mine on my bed again, figuring that it won't take long to cheer Michie up.
"Yes!" Jaycee cried out, pulling out her phone from her oversized black dungarees. "Should I call 911?" She asked, already dialing the number.
"No Jaycee we're not in danger," I replied, shaking my head. "Call someone to get us out of here."
"I don't have anyone's number," frowning, she placed her phone back in her pocket. "Michie can you call someone?"
"No I left my phone in my dorm room," I remembered telling her to drop her phone in case she felt the urge to call Raymond.
Oh how deeply I regret that now.
"So we're hopeless?" Jaycee looked like she was about to panic again.
"Wait no," I stated, thinking deeply before a lightbulb dinged in my head. "Give me your phone."
She handed it to me before asking, "Who are you calling?"
I racked my brain trying to recall his number.
"My brother," I stated, phone to my ear as I listened to his annoying ringtone.
He didn't pick up. So I tried again. And again.
Finally he answered me, "Don't you think it's a little late to try and sell me into some fraudulent marketing ploy?" He asked, his voice tense and angry.
"Hey Nate."
"Debs?" He sounded suprised, "Why are you calling me from an unknown number?" He sounded worried now.
"Long story short my friends and I are trapped in the cafeteria's storage room," I cut the call, handing the phone back to Jaycee. "Now we wait."
As we waited Jaycee suggested we play a game of I Spy to distract us. We all agreed and sat on the cold, hard floor as Jaycee started.
"I spy with my little eye," she paused, "something raw, smelly and from the ocean."
I looked around until I saw it hidden behind several cans of fishsticks, "Frozen fish!" I yelled. Since I got it right, I went next.
"I spy with my little eyes," I looked around in search of something difficult to notice, once I found it I quickly looked in the opposite attention to throw them off track, "something curved, edible and nutritious."
Jaycee rolled her eyes, "That could easily be anything," Jaycee had taken her glasses off by now and I could tell how much she needed them by how she squinted her eyes to see.
"Bananas!" Michie shrieked after some time. "My turn," she said giddily, rubbing her hands for warmth.
"I spy with my little eye," she was cut off by the door opening, we all looked at the person, well not all of us as Jaycee was still finding it difficult to see, "something tall, manly and sexy."
"Ew."
"Where?" Jaycee asked confusedly, "I can't see anything."
"Ouch," placing his hand on his chest he spoke out dejectedly, "That hurt."
Using her shirt sleeve, Jaycee cleaned her glasses and put them back on.
"Holy mother of cheese and biscuits!"
She gaped at my brother, her jaw almost reaching the ground. I had to slap them both to regain their attention.
"Let's focus on getting out of here first," with that I stood up and exited the freezing place. "Thanks bro, I owe you a solid."
He nodded then turned to my friends, we were now all outside the freezer, "And you are?"
"Jaycee," she squealed, slightly intimidated by his tall frame.
"Michie," she said alluringly, twirling her hair as she bit her bottom lip slightly .
I cringed at that, "I'll see you guys later," I shooed them, uncomfortable at the way they were ogling my brother.
Once they left I turned back to Nate. "What were you guys doing in a freezer?" He asked suspiciously.
"Eating ice cream," I rolled my eyes at his dirty insinuation, even though he had not spoken it.
"Without me!" He said shocked, "You know how much I love ice cream."
"Sorry next time I have a spontaneous trip I'll include you," I rolled my eyes once more. We started walking out the cafeteria doors.
He kissed his teeth at that. "Your friends seem nice."
"Don't try anything," I warned.
"Of course not," he smirked, green eyes glinting with deviousness.
"I'm serious Nate."
"Alright fine," he held his hands defensively, but I could still see that devilish glint in his eyes.
Once we got to the open field I bid my farewell and he engulfed me in one of his suffocating hugs. "Stay safe Debbie," he said, kissing my forehead before walking back to his hostel.
Sighing, I made my way back to my hostel. Everywhere was quiet so I knew it was way past curfew.
Not wanting to wake up the matron, I opened our room door quietly, Michie was looking down at her phone sadly.
"He called," she spoke, looking up at me.
"He called 8 freaking times," her voice was getting higher now and I tried to shush her.
"Calm down," I said, "He called, so what?"
"So what!" She whispered yelled, "My freaking boyfriend called me and I was out eating ice cream with you guys!"
"Ex boyfriend," I reminded her.
"Now is not the time," she looked frustrated, abject and confused all at the same time. "What should I do?"
I took the phone from her, "You should go to bed."
She looked relieved that I'd taken the phone, and quickly changed to her pyjamas. A few minutes after, she was asleep on her bed.
I took a bit more time going to bed, sending good night messages to Nate and my dad. After some thought I sent one to my mum as well.
Once I was finally ready to sleep, I lay on my bed, counting the luminous stars on the wall, before slowly drifting off.
Then I heard the sound of an incoming notification.
I quickly checked my phone to see no incoming messages, but Michie's phone lit up with an incoming message.
I want to get back together.
Through my blurry, sleepy eyes I could make out Raymond's name displayed above the message, leaving me even more confused.
Not knowing what to do I acted on impulse and deleted the message.
Michie didn't need that right now.
