Chapter One
She was just seven years of age when she tamed a dragon.
It was a brilliant sunny day. Ailurophilia, or Luro, as most called her, was playing in her backyard. Her parents were inside their small yet spacious two-story house. She was just messing around with her toy broom and snitch, wearing a robe that was a bit too big for her.
"And quittich player Luro catches the golden snitch!" she laughed, clenching the small, yellow ball in her fist.
She hobbled around on her toy for a bit more, but then stopped. Something was in the bushes, in the forest she lived in front of. She felt its presence.
She put down her toys and stepped cautiously over towards the noise. Her keen eyes caught sight of a frightened, scaled eye.
"It's okay," she whispered, "I won't hurt you."
She came closer, and saw that it was a newly hatched dragon. It's jaw was tied, and it looked scared, hurt and immobile. A cloud of smoke puffed from its nostrils. Luro gasped, then quickly reached out to untie the rope that held its jaw. The dragon pulled away, a few sparks escaping its nose.
She gently grabbed it and looked intensely into its eyes. It struggled, but eventually looked into hers.
There was kindness in her silvery blue eyes.
It allowed her to untie it. Slowly but surely, the bounds were loosed. The dragon looked up at her with trust. She smiled down at it.
It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
She brought him inside, startling her parents, but then they eventually decided to help her assist the dragon's recovery. They bandaged its wounds and fed it until it was ready to go back into the wild. But when the time came, it didn't want to go. Luro decided to keep it in their meeting place, the backyard, and borrowed books from the nearest library to show it how to get food.
She named it Sparky.

Three years later...

"I wish I was magic so I could go to Hogwarts!" sighed Luro, "Oh, the things I could learn!"
"You mean other than good ol' algebra, science and literacy?" asked her mother.
Luro sighed again, straining to smile. Mum grew up with the muggle life, she thought, she wouldn't understand.
She hopped off her seat, and went to wash her breakfast plate and utensils.
"School starts in two weeks, you know," her mother continued, "It would make sense for you to start practicing and getting used to educational life. We'll find a muggle store and get your supplies by tomorrow, and then you can pack your bag ready for summer to end."
For summer to end.
Luro shuddered. Summer was almost at its end. She was almost eleven. Her dreams would almost be over. The thought made her head spin.
"May I please go out to play with Sparky?" she asked politely.
"Sure."
She smiled and bounced towards the back door, unlatching the locks and rushing outside, where her enormous dragon was waiting for her as always.
They were lucky they had such a big backyard.
Luro laughed, tickling the dragon's chin. Sparky shot a few flames towards the forest, (not harming anything but some branches) and snorted out a cloud of thick smoke.
"Woah!" Luro coughed, laughing, "That one's a cumulonimbus!"
Skully, the thestral that often came around, trotted in, with a two unicorns with him; a mother and its golden baby.
The girl had obviously seen these creatures before. "Skully!" she called softly, "you brought Goldie and her mum!"
Luro was able to see the thestral because she had witnessed her grandfather's death. She had been the only one in the room when he drifted off to sleep for the last time.
She ambled on over towards the three hoof-bearing, magical creatures.
"Hi!" she whispered softly, "remember me?"
The baby unicorn nuzzled her hand, but the adult stayed back, nearer to the forest.
Luro smiled, then sighed sadly. She wouldn't be able to do this as much when she went to muggle school.
Why did summer have to end?
