Chapter Three

The cat was small, really more of a kitten. It seemed to be asleep, its little tail, with feathers on either side of the end, curled up around its folded, delicate feathery wings.

Luro pulled herself up, and stood there for a second. She turned her head, swishing her huge mane of tangled red hair. The unicorns weren't coming back any time soon. Nothing seemed to have noticed, otherwise, if it did, it went far away.

She crept over towards the kitten, hovering over it for a moment. It was beautiful. She sat down next to it, and stroked its soft, ice-white coat. It purred, and opened its eyes. They were a striking, sky blue. It stared up at Luro, deciding that she would be its mother. Luro smiled and petted it a bit more, then gently picked it up and carried it inside.

She was met by her father.
"Hey, kiddo!" he greeted her, "What's that you've got there?"

He gestured to the little animal in her arms.

"I'm not exactly sure," she told him, "it seems to be a cat with wings."

"How did a cat get wings?"

"I don't know; the unicorn picked me up and I touched its horn and then suddenly a lump of fur and a feather turned into this cute little thing!"

"What??? That explains the flash of light I saw. Daughter, I think you might be magic after all."

"No, it was the unicorn."

He produced his wand and handed it to her, "Give 'er a whirl."

Holding the winged kitten in one arm, she flicked her father's wand. A nearby vase crashed to the floor.

"Well there you go!" her father said, excited, then called her mother over in excitement.

She came rushing in, "What is it?"

"Luro's magic!" he stated proudly.

The girl blushed, adjusting her grip on the animal she held very carefully, so as not to disturb it.

"How?!" the mother asked, shocked.

"A little bit of transfiguration gone wrong, but I think in the right way," he smiled.

Luro, still blushing, held out the creature for her to see. And as if on cue, a fluffy, brown bird came fluttering in. The owl held a letter in its beak, which it dropped promptly in her arms, then quickly flew back out the open door as if nothing had happened.

Luro gasped, putting down the cat and picking up the letter. Her mother closed the door, and her father leaned over her shoulder. She opened it up, scanning the words, quickening as she went. Her father's eyes widened, and her mother walked over.

"What is it?"

Luro and her father squealed, jumping for joy, "I'm in Hogwarts! I'm in Hogwarts!"
"She's in Hogwarts! She's in Hogwarts!"

"What????"

"Mum, this is huge!!"

She was confused, but she just smiled anyway and pulled her husband and daughter into a group hug. The kitten mewed up at them. Luro laughed, picking it up and pulling it into the hug.

***************

"Alright, so we got your robe, your hat, your books... what else do we need?" Luro's mother asked as they strolled around, shopping for her school supplies.

"Well," she replied, cuddling her newest pet, the winged kitten, "we also got my quill, but a wand might be nice."

"Ooh!" her father piped in, "We have to go to Ollivander's! It's where I got my wand!" He whipped it out with pride.

"You know," her mother whispered in her ear, "you're very lucky that Hogwarts doesn't begin yet. You could've had to spend a while catching up."

Her husband excitedly led them towards a nice-looking little shop. Ollivanders. Luro was amazed at the shelves and shelves of wands.

"Wow," she said.

The man at the front desk had seen her come in with her parents.

"Ah, Mr and Mrs Truffle," he said, "and I presume this is your daughter, little Ms Truffle?"

"I'm Luro," she smiled.

"And you're here for your first wand?"

Luro nodded her head.

"Then step right in; I have many to choose from."

Luro looked up at her parents, then at the winged kitten that started it all.

Everything was perfect.
