8.

I wasn't really sure what to expect from a party around here.

The ones back home could range from a total rager, to a super chill kick back. This party was teetering between the two. It was nicer than I had anticipated for sure. Kaitlyn had a decent sized one story brick house and it was on a lot with good distance from the neighbors so no one was too worried about the cops getting called. Kaitlyn made everyone bypass walking through the house and head straight into the back yard. She had a tall privacy fence surrounding it and nice tiki lights set up around her pool and on her patio. I seriously wondered how long it had taken her to do all of this.

David and I stood by the booze table on the deck with Brittany, Lucas, and Trent from my marine biology class.

"I'm so glad you came." Brittany slurred with her red solo cup in her hand.

I laughed at her and winked. "You'd be thirsty if I hadn't." I joked.

"It is so awesome that you brought all of this!" Trent cheered holding his cup up over his head. "This is going to be the most turnt party now thanks to you."

David laughed at his friend and slung his arm over my shoulders, pulling me a little closer to him. Garrett may have been right about David thinking this was a date. "Yeah Cade, you are so awesome." David agreed then pulled me even tighter to his side.

"She is pretty great." A voice I hadn't expected to hear said from behind us. Everyone turned to see Garrett looking like a million bucks walk up onto the porch with us. He had put some product in his hair and he was wearing a nice light blue polo button down that made his eyes look even more blue than usual. Everyone around the table just stared at him weirdly as he mixed himself a drink and then leaned back against the banister to my right. "Good party?" He asked.

I smiled as the others stuttered some 'yeahs', and 'you bet.'

"Didn't know you'd be coming out tonight Garrett." David said slightly defensively.

Garrett just let it roll off of him. "Yeah I didn't think I would, but then Cade convinced me."

David's grip on my arm tightened. "Oh, really?" he asked. "She hadn't mentioned you."

I laughed and wiggled out from under David's arm. "I need a drink." I announced.

"I'll make you one." Garrett said reaching out for a cup.

"No." David said quickly. "I can make you one Cade." David shot Garrett a dirty look and then grabbed a cup and started to fill it with all sorts of things. Garrett walked his cup over to the keg and filled it up while he kept his eyes on David. "Here you go babe." David said as he picked up the drink to hand it over to me. I was about to take it from his hand when all of a sudden the cup tipped backwards and poured down the front of David's shirt. "What the hell?!" He yelled throwing the cup down and grabbing napkins off the table to clean himself up.

Everyone at the table gasped and then started laughing. Everyone except Garrett. I cut my eyes to him quickly and I saw a tiny mischievous smile on his lips while he was looking at David's ruined shirt. When he caught me looking he quickly smiled and shrugged his shoulders. "Here you go Cade." He said as he sweetly handed me the beer he had just poured.

David stomped away from the table and went inside. I thought about following him, but he seemed pretty pissed so I decided to stay out instead. "So you decided to come after all." I said to Garrett.

He smiled at me and the others who were still staring at him crazily. "Indeed I did." He said. "You look great by the way." He complimented gesturing to my outfit.

I actually blushed, and then blushed harder because I am not the type of girl who blushes. "Thanks." I said biting my lip. I had run the straightener through my hair, and actually taken the time to do my make-up tonight. I was wearing a white linen romper and a pair of ankle boots that I had gotten over a year ago but never actually worn before. "Not too shabby yourself." I laughed.

Garrett looked down at his outfit and then swatted my shoulder. "Oh, this old thing?" He joked.

"You're a loser." I laughed.

"Takes one to know one." He shot back.

I couldn't figure out why nobody else was talking or anything with him. I looked around and everyone was just looking at their drinks or off to the other people in the yard. "What's wrong with you guys?" I asked them finally.

They seemed to snap out of it a little since they had been called on it. "Nothing Cade." Brittany said awkwardly. "So Garrett, I've never seen you at a party before." She said to him.

"I haven't ever been invited before." He shrugged.

"Seriously?" I blurted out. "Why the heck not?" I was looking to the others, not Garrett for the response. Trent opened his mouth to answer but then he looked passed me and snapped his mouth back shut.

"Probably because of me." I heard a girl's voice say from behind me. I didn't have to turn around to guess who it was. Especially not after everyone else from the deck cleared out to either go inside or down to the yard. I turned slowly to have my thoughts confirmed. There was Carrianne, looking as annoyingly perfect as usual. Her green eyes bore into mine. "We haven't had the pleasure of meeting officially yet." She said as she held out her hand to me. "I'm Carrianne Montclair."

I reluctantly reached out to take it but Garrett smacked my hand away before it reached hers. "What the heck Garrett?" I asked surprised.

Carrianne looked highly ticked off at him. "Let's go Garrett." She said firmly. Her voice was so sickly sweet, but menacing all at the same time.

"I'm at a party Carrianne, it's not a big deal. You can stay if you want." He said to her.

"Oh can I?" She said annoyed.

"Don't do this here Carrianne." Garrett said seriously.

Carrianne looked around and all of a sudden the power shut off. The music stopped, and all of the lights were dead. All that was left was the torture of silence. "Oh pity, the party is over." She said sarcastically. "Let's go Garrett." She said again with more force.

"I hate you." Garrett said as he began to follow her out. I could hear in his voice how much he meant it.

"I guess you'll just have to get over that huh." She shot back as they continued to walk away.

I was so confused and shocked at the whole interaction I had just seen that all I could do was stand in the spot where they left me. I watched from the porch as Carrianne and Garrett walked to the gate to head back to the front. "Enjoy the party everyone." Carrianne called out in a sweet voice and then the power came back on as she passed through the gate.

What in the world had just happened?
