Q&A WITH THE CHARACTERS OF 'HUMAN'

CADENCE:

What is your favorite memory of Stephen? I have so many great memories with my brother. He was just the kind of person that every time we were together we were having a good time. One of my favorite thigs to look back on was when we were probably 13 years old. I had asked Stephen to teach me to throw a punch. There was a guy picking on me, and Stephen had been really reluctant to teach me because he always said he would look out for me, but I had insisted that I need to know how to fight my own battles. The lesson only last for maybe five minutes when my aim was way off and instead of hitting his open hands as hard as I could, I hit him in the mouth on accident. His lip was bleeding so badly, but he was laughing his horrible cackling laugh. I was so upset that I had hurt him, but he hugged me and told me that I was a badass and didn't need any more lessons.

Do you love your adoptive parents? I'd be lying if I said that I don't. I mean, they were the people who raised me. They may be bad people, but my mom is still the woman who used to braid my hair before bed, and my dad is still the man who taught me to ride my bike. I do have love for them, even after everything they have put me through.

If you had to choose between Derrek and Garret, who would you choose? I don't even want to think of that, honestly. They're both such good friends, and such different people. Besides, Garrett isn't exactly available anyway.

GARRETT:

I want to like him so much, but I feel that he has a lot of growth still before he can be the hero. Will he be able to stand up to convention (the match) and do the right thing and break things off, instead of the expected and stay with someone that he does not love? I certainly like to think that Garrett will be able to step up and realize that he hasn't been doing the right things yet. He definitely does have growing to do, but I think we will be able to see that growth out of it. At his center though Garrett does have a selfishness to him, and that is something he'd need to overcome to be able to become the 'hero' like you said.

Would you leave Carrianne for Cade? If I had a say in the matter at all, I would be with Cade, no doubt about it. It's just not that simple though.

Why can't you leave Carrianne and be with Cadence if you know you think she hot? I like a lot more about Cade than just her hotness, but breaking my pairing with Carrianne would be difficult. I want to do it, but I'm afraid of what the backlash could be, not only for me and my family, but also for Cade.

DERREK:

Why can't you see that Cade and Garrett are in love? I can see that there is definitely something going on there, but I can also see that when Cade is around me, she is happy. I haven't ever met a girl like her and I don't want to just give up on her just because she and Garrett have chemistry. I think I could make her happy, and unless she tells me there isn't any chance, I'm going to just keep trying to make her smile.

I feel like he is such an integral part of Cadence's maturing. He also took the information about Potentes so well, I can't help wondering if he has deeper meaning that we are not grasping yet or if he is just a supporting character. Do you foresee him ever having a gift or is there a hidden past we are not privy to yet? Derrek is actually a character that I never planned for. I hit a spot where I felt like I needed another filler character and so I created him, but he morphed into being much more than that. I definitely don't think of him as a supporting character anymore. I don't foresee him having any type of gifts, but I think he will have his own little twist soon to come...

CARRIANNE:

Do you know that Cade is your half-sister? Absolutely not! If I knew I was related to that little troll, someone would have heard about it by now.

Carrianne seems very unstable, it brings to mind the thought does she know more than she should about something? Her viscous outbursts, are they hiding insecurity, fear or is it just her nature? Are her parents the same way and do they approve of her? Carrianne is another character who in my mind started out as one thing, but now I see her going somewhere else. I think we will see another side to her soon. Like all people, she has facets to who she is. She definitely does have some reasons behind her anger. As for her parents, we are going to get more insight into them soon. I would say no, they don't approve of her behavior though.

Will you fight for the good side or the bad side if there comes a time? That would really depend on which would play out better for me and the people I care about. I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty, but I am not evil either.

NATASHA:

Why are you friends with Carrianne? Well, she didn't used to be so awful. We used to have fun together, and now all she does is complain and plot and be mean to everyone. I'd love to just cut my ties with her and spend time with my other friends but Carrie is extremely jealous and doesn't exactly make it easy for me to get away from her.

STEPHEN:

Did you know about who you really were before you passed? I did find out, but I can't say much about it.

There has to be more to his story as well. I love that he still has open communication with his sister. Are we going to see him involved more with Cadence as the story unfolds? Did he ever exhibit a gift and did he know that they were adopted? I do see him being involved some more with Cadence, I'm still unsure how much at this point. Stephen never did have a gift, but he was privy to the fact that they were adoptive and he knew who they really were.

CHARLES:

Charles, being both Carrianne and the twins' father is so intriguing, especially since they are so similar in age. Brings to mind, was he cheating and with whom? Also, was he not aware of Cadence and Stephen's birth? Did he have anything to do with their mother's death? All very good questions, but hard to answer without giving too much away. Charles' character will be coming into play soon and will be able to shed light on some important things.

QUESTIONS FOR THE AUTHOR:

How did you come up with the story line? I went into this knowing that I wanted to write a paranormal book. I watched a lot of movies in the genre and started trying to come up with something. I really just had a tiny idea pop into my head and I just ran with it. I don't usually plan out the whole story before I start writing it. Often I am just as surprised where things go as the readers.

Can you relate to Cadence in anyway? Do you have the same personality, music taste etc? Cadence and I are very different. Our music taste, and sarcasm are probably our only similarities. With my first book the main character was the most like me, the second was an opposite of me, and Cadence is very much like what I'd like to be. She's much more confident and sure of herself than I am.

Who do you ship more- Cade and Derrek or Cade and Garrett? That's such a hard one because I like things about them both. Derrek is so easy to like. He's funny, playful, and very real. Garrett has a more layered personality and with that he is more drama, but he and Cade have so much in common they understand each other so well. I'm still just not sure which I prefer. If you're hoping to know which one Cade will end up with, you're out of luck because I haven't figured that out yet either.

How do you think writing Human has been a big accomplishment to your Writing field? I really feel like this book has forced me to grow a little as a writer. It's much harder to write a paranormal book than I had thought it would be going into it. It requires so much background and time to fully develop the 'paranormal' part. I feel accomplished in having been able to do it successfully (I hope).

How are you so amazing at writing?! 😭 Thank you so much. I am happy you think I am! I only started writing three months ago, so I am super happy to be getting the support I have so far!

What inspired the story? What ending can we expect? Will there be a sequel? The main inspiration behind the story itself was the song Human by Christina Perri. I saw the video and decided from there that I wanted the 'paranormal' character to technically be a human and then I just went from there. I'm not giving anything away on an ending, but that's mostly because I still don't know how it will end. As far as a sequel, I don't see this book going further than just the one. That could change depending on how this one ends. It's too soon for me to rule out completely, but I don't presently plan to write more than one.
