Nathaniel's POV
"I need to go to the restroom," I told my sister as we walked towards the exit.
"Do you want me to wait here or outside?" She asked in turn, looking up and down the empty hallway. We were amongst the last to leave the school as we had to stop by the principal's office. Val was to blame for that; she'd gotten into an argument with one of our teachers.
"Outside," I replied. Maybe some of our classmates hadn't left the parking lot and could keep her company.
She nodded and walked forward while I took a turn right and headed for the restrooms. I opened the door and walked in. I could hear sounds coming from one of the cubicles, but other than that, the place was empty.
I entered another of the cubicles and unzipped my jeans. I heard a door open, then the swoosh of water as the other person washed their hands. Finishing my activity, I pulled the zipper up and got out. My mouth formed into an o when I realized who that other person was.
Hunter seemed surprised to see me too, but he quickly changed his expression and smirked. Leaning backwards on the sink, he watched me as I walked towards him and turned on the tap.
"Hi," I greeted quietly.
"Hey," he replied, his voice stronger than mine. "How was your day?"
"Strange," I admitted, imitating his pose once I'd washed my hands. "There was this girl today." I carefully observed his reaction; he didn't seem particularly interested in what I was telling him.
"Stacey." When I said her name, he raised an eyebrow. "You know her, right?"
He nodded.
"Did you order her to flirt with me?"
His eyes rounded and then he laughed.
"Why would I do that?"
"To cover for me." Now that I'd uttered it aloud, I realized how stupid that sounded. Hunter must've thought that too as his mouth went flat.
"Cover for you." He repeated, his tine cool.
"I mean... You know, so that people wouldn't see me staring at you," I mumbled, my gaze falling to the muddy floor. "Or if they see me staring, they wouldn't think much of it because they've also seen me with a girl."
I heard him sigh. His fingers lifted my chin up and I immediately looked about the restroom.
"We are probably the only ones in school at this time," he tried to calm me and I bit my lower lip.
"Just one quick kiss," I replied and before he could react, I pecked him over the lips and sped walked towards the door. I opened it a few inches, but he pushed it close again. I turned towards him and he shoved me, my back hitting the door. He leaned on my body.
"I didn't agree to just a quick one," he purred, lowering his head and placing a kiss on my neck. I tilted my head to the side and groaned.
"Hunter... Someone might see."
"So?"
I pushed him back and he laughed again.
"Alright, alright; we'll be careful." But right after he said that, he tried to kiss me again.
"Hunter!" I hissed.
"What?" He raised his shoulders. "As I said, there's probably no one else in school and besides, your back is on the door; they won't be able to come in."
"Vallery is waiting outside."
"So?" He asked again, his hand toying with the hem of my jeans. "Let her wait."
"And we haven't talked about Stacey."
He groaned.
"What about Stacey? I told you, I didn't send her. I wouldn't send her." He gazed straight into my eyes. "I don't want to share you, Nathaniel; not even if it is only pretence."
I pulled Hunter towards me and kissed him. I couldn't help myself after what I'd seen in his eyes. He wasn't looking as if he only wanted to play with me, as if he simply wanted to undress me, have his way and leave; he looked like he would stick around, like he'd stand up for me when I was finally ready to come out.
His hands slipped under my shirt and over my tummy. This time I didn't stop him. My own hands climbed up from his waist, towards his shoulders and then into his hair. I opened my mouth and let his tongue slide into my mouth.
I felt more excited with him than I'd ever been in my life, more intoxicated than with any girl. I knew I had to push him away so we could leave but I didn't want to. The only thing that gave me strength to do that was the thought that when we got home, I could sneak into his room - the only place where we didn't have to hide.
"Let's go," I whispered against his lips. "We can continue later."
He smiled at my proposal and moved away. I opened the door, grinning like a fool, my cheeks red and my lips swollen. I stepped out and Hunter followed.
"Just one for the road."
He grabbed me by the wrist and turned me towards him. My left hand still in the grip of his right one, he snaked an arm around my waist and placed his lips on mine.
That was when we heard it. A thump that boomed like thunder in the quiet hallway. I whipped my head around and my eyes fell on her.
Her books were scattered on the floor and she stood frozen over them, her mouth agape, her eyes filling with tears.
"Irene..." I began with her name, but I didn't know how to go on.
Her head was slowly moving from one side to the other as if she refused to believe what she'd just witnessed.
"Irene," I uttered again, but she emitted a strangled scream and placing a hand to cover her mouth, she turned around and scampered.
"Irene!" I shouted after her and glanced at Hunter. He nodded and I ran in pursuit.
"Irene wait!" I kept repeating, but she didn't halt. I managed to catch up with her just before she got out of the door.
"Irene, I..." She swirled around and slapped me across the face. My cheek stung, my ears rang, but I ignored all that and concentrated on trying to explain.
"What you saw, we didn't..."
"You bastard!" She bellowed at me. "I can't believe... You..."
She punched me in the chest and I coughed. Pain spilled through my torso; even my throat hurt. I took a shaky breath and attempted to speak again, but she beat me to it.
"You are... You were with me and now... With aguy?" Tears were rolling down her face. "With Hunter Harris? Were you just using me all that time? Was I some sort of a cover so that people wouldn't know about you two?"
"No, no, no, no!" I grabbed her hands before she could hit me again. "It's not like that, I swear it's not that." My voice was almost as croaky as hers. "I swear it wasn't like that; we weren't together back then. I didn't even know..."
... That I liked him.
That would've been a lie; I knew that I liked him, I just didn't want to admit it.
I couldn't tell her that; she deserved the truth.
"... That I could be with a guy," I finished instead.
Irene sniveled, her face contorting into an ugly grimace as her tears increased. I let go of her so I could hug and comfort her. Seeing her like this and because of me made my heart ache more than where she'd struck me.
Once free, she pushed my away and I stumbled back, surprised at how strong she was.
"Don't you touch me!" She hissed with venom, her dark eyes narrowing.
"Irene," I stepped towards her, but she moved back, raising her hand for another hit.
"Don't you dare touch me!" Her gaze was burning with fury.
"I hate you." Her voice was ice.
"I hate you, Nathaniel Reed."
I could do nothing but stare at her, water welling in my eyes as I watch her looking at me with aversion I'd never thought a nice girl like her could nurse.
"Don't ever talk to me again."
Her last words invaded my mind and refused to leave even when she was gone.
