surprise (chapter 18)

*Trigger warning: Ari was a bit pissed off in this chapter... and she lets some curse words fly out of her mouth. Please don't be offended or angry with her―she was just super mad! She promised me she'd wash her mouth with some soap after this, though :)*

Haven

I'm going to kill him.

"What the hell is going on," I hissed through clenched teeth, staring daggers into Luke's soul. I still didn't know who the other girl was, but it didn't matter. Fury made my vision red and prevented me from caring about anything else.

He opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out. Instead, the corners of his mouth lifted and his shoulders shook with silent laughter. Tears streamed down his cheeks and he tried to calm down by taking deep breaths, but he was unsuccessful.

"You finished?" I crossed my arms and looked at him impatiently.

In between his gasps for breath, he managed to get out, "Wasn't―that―amazing, Pris?"

Pris?

The girl finally turned around and giggled. The wind blew her blonde hair enough to move her hair out of her face, and I immediately took a step back when I saw who she was.

"Priscilla," I snarled.

"Hey there, Haven," she said with a wink. "How's my best friend doing?"

What?

"Pris said―you and Ari were planning a surprise―party for me," Luke said in between his laughter. "So she suggested we―surprise you guys instead." He took a final deep breath, and his laughter subsided.

Priscilla coiled her arm around his and batted her fake eyelashes. "Did you see her face, Lukey bear? Wasn't it hilarious?"

What the hell? Are they dating?

He cackled all over again and bent down to smack his knee. "Aw, man. I wish we had a camera right now. You should've seen your face, Hav!"

"You looked psychotic," Priscilla sneered.

"You're the psychotic one. Who the hell would ever do something like that?" I tried to stable my shaking hands by clenching them into fists at my sides. My heart pounded uncontrollably in fear.

At least it wasn't Dad, I said over and over to myself, trying to calm down my frantic heartbeat.

It's just Luke.

I'm safe.

Let's think about something else, Haven.

How does Luke know Priscilla?

Why is she here?

How did she know about the surprise party?

These thoughts weren't distracting enough. They were just stressing me out even more because I didn't have the answers to them, so instead, I sang "Kumbaya" in my head and took deep breaths.

When I tuned back into the scene in front of me, Priscilla was staring at Luke with complete adoration in her eyes. It made me want to puke. "You're a fantastic actor, Lukey."

"Not as great as you are, Pris. Your scream was amazing. It gave me the chills!"

Seriously, when did they even meet?

Didn't he just get back from college?

I looked away in disgust as they continued to praise each other.

Kumbaya my Lord, kumbaya.

Oh, Lord... Kumbaya.

"Wait, Hav. Are you okay?" he suddenly asked, looking at me with a worried expression. He took my wrists in his hands and traced over the marks the rope left. "Shit. I didn't mean to actually hurt you..."

I pulled my hands from his and took another step back. "Don't touch me, Luke."

"My bad, Hav. It was just a joke."

"You went too far. I was actually listing the different weapons I could use to hurt you."

"You wouldn't hurt a fly." He smiled softly. "I know you."

I glared at Priscilla, who smirked at me. "I wouldn't be too sure about that."

"Her reaction was a lot better than Ariella's, wasn't it?" Priscilla asked.

Oh my God. Ari!

Suddenly, there was the sound of glass breaking. A few seconds after, a car alarm blared incessantly in the distance.

Luke and Priscilla looked up. "What―"

Ari hobbled her way over to us, with one high heel on and the other clenched tightly in her hand. Mascara streamed down her cheeks like tears, but I knew better than to think she'd been crying. No, Ari was furious. Her face glistened with sweat, and her hair was a matted mess.

"If someone doesn't explain what the hell is going on, I'm going to dial 911 and report you both for FUCKERY," Ari screamed.

When she was close enough, she swung her arm back and threw her shoe at Luke, who easily dodged it. It bounced off of Priscilla's shoulder instead. "You did not just do that," she spat.

"Oh, but I think I just did, Prissy. What the hell are you doing here?"

"You better hope that doesn't leave a bruise on my skin." Priscilla looked down at the scuff mark on her blouse and ignored Ari's question. "You got dirt on me!"

Good.

"You haven't seen anything yet," Ari countered as she reached down to pick up a stone from the driveway.

Uh-oh.

"Whoa there, Sis," Luke tried to reason. "Let's just put the rock down, alright?"

"Help me, Lukey," Priscilla interrupted. "She's trying to hurt me!"

"Shut up, PP."

"What? You need to calm down, Ariella."

Wrong move, Priscilla. Ari's going to kill you for saying that.

"Calm down? You want me to calm down? You locked me in an effing car for an hour, assholes!" She dropped the rock and threw her other shoe instead, and it hit Priscilla smack in the middle of her forehead.

Ha!

"My face! Oh my God. You cow," Priscilla shrieked. "You'll pay for this!"

"Girls!" Luke tried to step in between them, but Ari side-stepped him and pushed him away.

"Oh, I'm sorry, Prissy," Ari mocked. "You poor baby. Here, come here so I can fix it." She bent over to remove her sharp rings from her fingers, but I ran to her before she could throw those, too.

At the same time, Luke ran over to Priscilla, probably to calm her down.

I opened my mouth to speak but stopped when I noticed a trail of red drops on the ground. "Ari, what happened?" I asked, taking her arm in my hands.

Her elbow was bleeding, but she didn't seem to notice. I quickly scanned the rest of her body to make sure she wasn't hurt anywhere else.

She continued to glare at Luke, who looked worried. Without looking down to inspect the injury, she said, "I broke the car window with my heel and shimmied my way out. I guess the glass cut my skin."

He gasped. "You broke my little Porsche's window?"

"That's what you're worried about?" Ari spat. "You deserved it, asshole."

"No, I mean―sorry, Sis," he stuttered. "Priscilla thought it'd be funny to lock you in the car."

"Funny? Is it funny that you made me ruin my favorite Valentino shoes? Which you owe me a thousand dollars for, by the way," she added with a menacing stare.

"Get over it, Ariella. You're such a drama queen," Priscilla chimed in.

"Hey, now. Let's play nice, girls," Luke said as he placed his hand gently on Ari's. "Friends don't say rude things like that to each other."

"Us, friends? Yeah, right." Ari paused as she looked from Priscilla to Luke, and then back to Priscilla again. "Since when did you two become all buddy-buddy?"

"Actually, we just―" Luke started to say.

"Since always," Priscilla interrupted with another wink.

They just what?

"Why are you even here, Prissy?" Despite my pounding heartbeat, I finally found my voice and stared at her disgustedly, unwilling to back down now. "No one invited you."

"I'm the life of every party. Of course I'd be here."

"Shut up, you mutt," Ari snapped. "Get off my property."

Luke crinkled his eyebrows and looked back and forth between the three of us. "What...? But Priscilla said―"

"Ari, you invited me, silly. I heard you talking about it with Haven at lunch."

"You eavesdrop on our conversations now? How pathetic."

"Anyways." Priscilla cleared her throat and smoothed out the tangles in her hair. "I didn't receive an invitation, but it's okay―as your best friend, I didn't feel like I needed one," Priscilla interrupted.

"Best friend? Maybe you've been sucking too many monkey butts lately. I don't hang out with fake bitches like you," Ari scoffed, angrily.

Priscilla's mouth dropped open, but Luke looked even more shocked. He widened his one green eye and one blue eye and shuffled his weight from one leg to the other.

"You guys aren't friends?" he asked, nervously scratching his head.

"I wouldn't befriend her even if we were the only two people left in the universe," Ari hissed.

Priscilla took a breath to say something, but I spoke up instead. "No one wants you here, you witch. Leave."

"You want me here, right, Lukey?" She looked up at Luke, her eyes full of hope.

Gross.

"Get out before I take Ari's rings and throw them at you myself," I said through gritted teeth.

"Luke?"

"Um... Maybe you should go," he mumbled.

Yeah, good idea.

"What? But―" she started to protest.

"Bye, Felicia," Ari and I said in unison.

Priscilla threw us a nasty look and stomped away in a huff. Before getting into her car, she threw us a dirty look over her shoulder, and I waved to her sarcastically.

"Don't ever think about coming back," Ari yelled.

Priscilla drove off the driveway and into the busy street, stepping on the gas pedal and revving her engine as she passed by us.

We both turned to Luke and glared at him.

"Surprise," he said, weakly.

"Shut up," Ari snapped. "This is what we get for trying to surprise you?"

"I-I really didn't know," he stammered. "I ran into her in front of the house, and she introduced herself as your best friend."

"You think I would befriend a person like that?" Ari hissed. "She's not even human."

"Yeah, I'd never seen her before, but I figured things had changed within the past few years."

"Maybe you'd know who my friends were if you came home a little more often, Luke."

"You know why I don't come home, Sis."

"Whatever." Ari released a breath and looked away, but not before I could see the hurt in her eyes.

"Anyways, she said she was here for the party. She seemed nice," he mumbled, looking down so that his dirty blond hair covered his blue eye. The other green one revealed that he was concerned, and he closed them for a few seconds before he continued. "She told me your plan and suggested that we scare you guys instead. She planned out what we'd say and do, and I thought it'd be fun, so I went along with it."

We said nothing in return, but continued to glare at him.

"I'm sorry," he repeated. "I missed pranking you guys when we were kids, and I had three years to make up for. I really didn't mean to hurt you."

When neither of us said a word, he took a step forward towards us. He gently reached for Ari's elbow and my wrist, but we both stepped back before he could make contact. A look of hurt flashed across his face, but he kept his hands to himself and said, "Let's go inside. I'll clean the both of you up."

"Leave us the hell alone, Luke. We're leaving," Ari spat.

"Don't go. I promise I'll make it up to you guys. Let me help you out first."

"No. Tell Rachel I'm not coming back home tonight."

"Come on, Sis. Let's go inside."

I took a few steps back and gave them some space. I knew Ari had missed Luke over the years, and she probably had a lot of pent up anger against him.

"You have no right to be telling me what to do, Brother. You haven't been here for the past three years."

"Don't be like that, Ari. Come on, your elbow is bleeding pretty badly."

"I'm not the little girl I was when you saw me last. I can take care of myself."

"I know you can," he whispered. "I just want to help. I missed you, Sis, and I'm sorry I haven't been here. Let me help you."

"Leave me alone. I've been fine without your help for the past few years." She turned to me and held out her hand. "Come on, Haven. We're leaving."

"Where are you going?"

"None of your business," she said, harshly. "And don't even think about following us."

"Missed you too, guys," he whispered as we turned our backs to him.

Ari linked her arm through mine, and we walked to my car, leaving behind an apologetic Luke standing in the driveway.

"What an asshole," Ari hissed over and over when we got into the car. She fumbled with the seatbelt but gave up after a while. Instead, she leaned back and put her arm over her eyes.

"Is your arm okay?" I asked, eyeing her bleeding elbow. "It looks pretty bad."

"I'm fine," she said. "It doesn't hurt."

I nodded and stayed quiet, squeezing my eyes shut before putting the key in the ignition. I sat still and tried to calm my pounding heart.

"What about you, chica? Are you okay?" Ari asked, softly.

I opened my eyes and saw her staring at me with a worried expression.

"No," I admitted. "I thought... When Luke grabbed me, I thought it was Dad."

"What? What did Luke do to you?"

"Nothing. He just kept calling me 'angel' and 'princess', just like Dad does."

"I'm so sorry, babe. He doesn't even know your dad calls you that, so he didn't do it on purpose. Don't worry, you're safe."

I took a deep breath and started the car. "Yeah, you're right."

Ari placed her hand on mine, and I gave her a weak smile.

"Let's go to your house," she suggested.

"'Kay."

"Is it okay if I stay over for a few days? I don't think I can be in the same house as Luke for a while." I nodded, and she continued. "I don't want to be arrested for murdering my own brother. I'm too pretty to be in prison."

I chuckled and smacked her arm playfully. "Okay, Tuna. Whatever you say."

Ari giggled. Then, her giggles turned into snickers, and her snickers turned into laughs. Pretty soon, she was laughing so hard that tears were streaming down her cheeks.

"What is wrong with you?" I asked, giving her an incredulous look.

"We look like crap." She continued to laugh and slap her knee. "Can you believe how crazy this is? Like, did all of this actually happen?"

I chuckled and rolled my eyes at her silliness. "I know. I'm still confused about what happened. All I know is that I need a hot shower."

"We both do." She paused. "And what was up with Prissy calling my brother 'Lukey'? Gross!"

"I know, right? She was acting like they were dating, but they just met today." I rolled my eyes.

Putting the car into reverse, I backed out of her driveway. "Look. Your brother is still standing there." I pointed to him as we left her house.

"He looks pathetic."

"He sounded really sincere when he apologized, though. Do you think he meant it?"

"Eh, I don't know. But we'll let him suffer for a little bit longer," she added with a bitter chuckle. "He deserves it."

A few minutes later, we were driving along the road, singing our hearts out to the new Selena Gomez song with the windows down. Suddenly, Ari said, "Wait!"

"What?" I slammed on the brakes in a hurry and checked over the hood of the car to make sure I hadn't run over a stray dog.

"Isn't that Reeve?" she asked, turning to look through the rear window.

"Jeez, Ari. I thought something bad happened!" I hit her arm playfully.

My heart skipped a beat as I looked in the rear view mirror. Sure enough, Reeve was standing on the sidewalk behind us. He lifted his arm to wave, and I could almost see the small, sad smile that rested on his lips. Even from here, I could see that his smile didn't reach his eyes as they usually did.

"He looks so unhappy," Ari said, softly.

"I guess," I mumbled.

I wanted to stop right there, get out of the car, and run straight to him... but I didn't.

Shaking my head, I looked away from the mirror and slowly released my hold on the brakes.

It took everything in me to press the gas pedal and drive away.

A/N: So that's Luke! Please don't hate him too much ― he really didn't know what was going on :( sneaky Priscilla had him under her spell!

I'm not going to lie... I actually went back and forth between who I wanted the kidnappers to be.
