Chapter 1:
I bounced my leg up and down whilst jotting on spiral notepad.
How could I have forgotten who I am?
This is insane!
And where the hell was I if I was a fictional character?
I closed my eyes as my mother continued dissecting my suddenly expressive face. She must have gotten used to my vapid reactions and chalked it to my poor health. I scribbled down plot beats I could hastily recall from memory about the Crepuscle series.
I looked at the glowing granite I had polished this morning. Isadora in the novel: Crepuscle was a white girl with a heart shaped face, and lips too full for her mouth.
"Thank God! I'm still black."
My mother stared perplexed by my words. She was also black actually with skin smooth as silk and the colour of smoked wood. She was very slight and embarrassed me with how young she dressed.
When I isekai-ed here had the story changed to accommodate my appearance?
I could only assume. Because I wasn't the pale Isadora. But I guess I could not resent the name since I had been Isadora, a good 10 years now.
"Should I tell your father you aren't feeling well enough to travel today?"
I squinted at her.
Of course she would say that. She never wanted me to be with dad. Especially after her own mother thought it best if my dad had custody of me.
He was the responsible one and every day since my grandma left this earth she's been trying to keep me from seeing my dad.
"I'm fine. Won't you be breaking the custody arrangement?"
My mother winced. She hurriedly tried to pack my bags instead of face my accussatory glances.
The judge had only agreed to having, my then freshly turned 19 year old, mother have custody of me if she got a full time job and went back to school.
She never went back to school by the time the probation period came and my grandma died. My dad had full custody of me as a police officer and fisherman.
But my mother had to be petty and ask every lawyer she knew to help get her parental rights back. Of course she was a month from winning the case when I almost died and no lawyer or judge could fathom allowing such a misdemeanour to continue.
Dad, bless his heart , said my mom could have me back until I was 12.
I was over the moon. I'd get to live with my daddy from then on....I squeezed my pen too hard..
My mother, before I remembered myself, would often bellyache about how hard it would be to cook with me gone. My mother was the type who barely knew how to cook rice right, it was either too soggy or burnt beyond recognition.
Then she cried some alligator tears and said I hated her because she was a bad mother. And I felt bad and dad felt bad and we just went along with what she wanted.
Screw it. I did detest her. I hated her as a character in the novel as Isadora's mother.
But now that she was my mother I regretted not appreciating my real mother from my other life... Who cared vastly more and sacrificed for her kids. This mom was like a discount bin model...
My blackberry phone buzzed.
That was a trip when I was a teenager I had a Nokia...
I shook my head.
All these old memories of my past life flowing concurrently with Isadora's memories gave me a migraine. I rubbed my temples.
Lailah had texted. I grinned.

My mother pouted.
"Who are you texting?"
"Lailah," I said curtly.
"Oh, Harold's daughter?"
"Uha," I said paying her no mind.
She frowned.
I stood after locking my phone. I walked with my duffel bag and carry on to my mother's navy blue mini-cooper.
As I dumped the bags in my mom tailed behind me like she was my child.
"Won't you get bored going so early to the aeroport?"
"The flight's at 3 p.m. mom. They can always go earlier."
I wasn't falling for that again.
My mom had once said that and that year my dad had to pay double to get me home. My mom never once paid for my flight tickets.
Which is why she could shamelessly suggest I not go anymore since she didn't pay for it!
"Mom, you can't stop me! I'm going to see my dad."
She flinched. Yes, mom I noticed!
She bit her lip and drove me to the aeroport which was 30 minutes from where we lived. I reluctantly hugged her goodbye .
In the solitude of the aircraft I reviewed my notes of the Crepuscle series.
>The protagonist was named Isadora Maria Wren (That's me!)
>She was 17 when the story started
(Why did I remember all this at 15?)
>She moves to Cucaras at age 17
(Still with my mom for holodays, but been with my dad for 3 years now )
I sighed and my seatmate puzzled over my behaviour.
Someone jostled our seats as he raced to the bathroom as soon as we lifted off. I heard the lock.
>She meets Edmund Cunningham in biology class and he grimaces at her smell... So much so the protagonist thinks she is rank
>He spends the next two months ignoring her and secretly breaking into her room at night (yikes! )
I sigh but I forgot when the Cunninghams went to Cucaras.
Well, I wasn't following the timeline perfectly. I was going back home to dad now.
My mother had been keeping me on a leash. Not anymore.
If I wanted to save my life and stop this character from being a vampire...and having a dhampir child I had to be proactive in changing my life.
Goodbye, Fernfield, Lincoln-town. Hello Cucaras, Dlomonti!
