Chapter 8
The elite intern is leaning against the wall outside the medical room. I see no recognition in his face when he sees me. I doubt he recognizes me since we only met for a few short seconds. To him, I am just one of many srats he saw in the market that day. Wherever we are right now, it must not be too far away from home if he works here but was able to visit the market in my town. Since he is just an intern, he doesn't have access to a transporter yet. Only the king's closest advisors are given such advanced technology. An unfamiliar voice brought me out of my musings.
"Are you going to stand around staring all day, or are you ready to go see the Chief Genetic Advisor?"
"Do you mean Charlotte?" I know she's important, but I didn't know she is one of the king's closest advisors.
"You came here with the Chief Genetic Advisor. If she is the one you call Charlotte, then she is the one I am taking you to."
"In that case, lead the way."
"There isn't much leading to be done," he says while casually waving a hand towards three white circular disks. Each disk is about two and a half feet in diameter and about half an inch thick. As I stared in curiosity at them, he stepped on one and it lit up. Looking up at Joy and I impatiently, he gestured towards the other two disks.
"Well? What are you waiting for? Unlike you, I have important things I need to be doing and all you are doing is wasting my time. Now get on the disks both of you!" Typical elitist, believing their time is so much more valuable than everyone else's. If his time is as valuable as he claims, then why was he wasting it in a srat market? As I stepped onto my disk, it lit up and elevated about an inch off the ground.
"What is your destination?" An automated feminine voice asked as a faintly colored barrier surrounded each disk. I think it is supposed to prevent us from losing our balance as the disks take us to our destination.
"Chief Genetics Advisor's office," the elitist requested.
"Please," I mutter under my breath.
"What did you say?" He asked sharply. I didn't realize I had spoken aloud.
"I said 'please.' When you make a request, it is polite to say please." He looks at me incredulously.
"It's a recording of a voice, not a real person." This time he spoke slowly in an irritated voice as though I were a child that had gotten on his nerves one too many times. I suppose my comment had been unnecessary and rather foolish now that I actually thought it through. My mother was always strict when it came to manners. Saying please with every request has just become a habit.
I am saved from any more lectures from the intern when the disks come to a halt outside an oak door. Charlotte opens the door after the third knock.
"I am glad to see you are well, Coral. Hunter, you can return to the labs." Hunter. So that is his name, I had never had the chance to ask. It suited both his appearance and his personality. He is tall with curly dark brown hair with forest green eyes. Oddly enough, he has a slight tan. A tan is strange since elitists usually spend all day working in labs and doing research. His personality is single-minded in his case, focused on his research.
After Hunter had left the room and closed the door behind him Charlotte asked Joy and I to take a seat near her desk.
"I'm sure you have several questions, so before you start what I'm sure will be a lengthy interrogation, allow me to tell you a bit about where you are and where you will be going."
"The facility we are currently at is the top research facility of Genetic Advancement in Revere. Our research involves preventing genetic flaws such as inheritable diseases before the birth of a child. We are dedicated to improving the lives of all citizens as well as their families. This facility is located next to the building where all who have been chosen for the isolation camps will be transported to. After this meeting you and Joy will be transferred to that facility.
While there, all who will be joining the camps will have to go through a three week quarantine along with many health tests to ensure no diseases are brought into the camps. Following the quarantine, there will be a four day orientation about what will be occurring during your stay in the isolation camps. Each adult will be expected to contribute work each day to research as well as the upkeep and leadership of the camps. Your position and job in the camp will be determined by the personality tests that will be run during the three week quarantine."
As Charlotte explained the process Joy and me will have to go through, it started to sink in how this situation is permanent. I will never see my mom again. In fact, I will probably never leave the isolation camp once I am living in it. It seems Charlotte is finally done with her short explanation so I can ask my questions now. There is so much I want to know about my new home.
"You keep saying we will live in one of the isolation camps. How many of them are there?"
"I can't tell you how many camps there are for security reasons." Security reasons? I wonder what threat other than the plague exists. Since so much of the world's population was wiped out during the Great War that we cannot afford to turn on each other. Ever since the war ended, there has been peace throughout Revere.
"How many people will be in each camp?"
"In your camp there will be at least four hundred adults and one hundred children. Different camps will have different populations."
"Where are the camps?"
"The exact location of the camps is classified, but I can tell you they are spread out in a variety of different climates. Proper clothes for the location of your camp will be provided shortly before departure." Charlotte's synced watch suddenly lit up and beeped twice.
"I understand you likely have more questions concerning the camps, Coral, but something urgent has come and it requires my immediate attention. Someone will be by shortly to show you to your rooms. We will finish this discussion tomorrow."
Sorry for the late update. I had some family obligations. Please vote and comment!
