Mercy checked the time after she woke up from her nap, 3:48. She had time to do something productive.
Looking through her clothes, she decided on running into town. Check out that diner and a couple of stores. Mercy put on a pair of comfortable jogging pants and a tank top, it was fall, but she'd be sweating anyway.
Putting her headphones over her ears she set out, Emarosa blasting in her ears as she sprinted to the middle of White Pine Bay. After filling her belly and buying some snacks, Mercy stood outside of the diner, chugging a water.
Mercy was walking back to the motel when a car pulled up beside her. She took her headphones off and looked into the opening window, prepared to tell whoever it was that: A - she wasn't a prostitute and B - she doesn't fight fair. "I-I'm sorry, I just saw you in the diner and then I spotted you walking. Um, well, do you want a ride?" Thinking nothing too bad could happen, Mercy stopped walking so she could pull open the door.
"Thanks. You guys sure are sweet and dandy here." Mercy said as she buckled her seat belt. The guy nodded, "I guess you could say that. So uh, where are you headed?" He asked seeming a bit unsure about everything. "I'm at the Bates Motel. It's right -"
"I know. That's where I'm heading too." He said cutting her off. Mercy looked at him for the first time. He was a cute guy, blond hair, a bit scruffy, blue eyes. "Hmm. I'm Mercy. You new to town too?"
"Dylan. Uh, no. I actually live at the motel with my mom and brother." Mercy nodded, "Ohhkay. I'm having dinner with you guys tonight. Norma invited me." Dylan's eyes got wide, so he kept them on the road, hoping Mercy wouldn't see. "She did? Did you used to know Norma?" He asked her. It didn't seem like Norma to invite some random stranger into her house. Not unless she wanted something to happen.
Mercy laughed, "I wish, if I did I'd be trying to stay for free." Dylan forced a chuckle and eyed Mercy, "So, what were you doing in the middle of town without a car?" He asked, trying to be nonchalant. If she was sent by someone, he didn't want to find out the painful way.
Looking back at Dylan, Mercy wrinkled her eyebrows, "I ran. Why?" Dylan shrugged, "Nothing, no reason. Just wanted to make sure you could get around safely. There are some dangerous people in White Pine Bay. Wouldn't want you to get into any trouble." Mercy rolled her eyes, "It seems like I'm already in trouble. Is there any specific reason you've got me in the middle of some kind of interrogation?"
"No, no. I was just trying to feel you out. Make sure you aren't gonna be an easy target around here." They were parked in the motel parking lot now. Mercy scoffed, "There's more of a threat in this crap town than me or anything that could 'target' me." She said as she got out of the car and walked to her room.
Dylan watched her walk back to her room. She said she was no threat, but he couldn't take her word so soon, it was always the pretty ones.
