Chapter 25
My heart broke into a million pieces, and I pressed my lips into a thin line. "Ok," I said and rubbed my hands together. "Then, I guess that is goodbye." I turned to look at both Declan and Patrick and raised an eyebrow in question. "Are you two going to stay with me, or are you two going to leave, too?"
The young Alpha hadn't moved far when I asked the two wolves if they were going to stay or leave and growled at them.
Both wolves flinched and ducked their heads in submission, and I couldn't help but roll my eyes and scowl, not liking that at all.
"They can choose themselves, young Alpha," I said, not looking at him and letting him hear the annoyance in my voice. "If they want to be friends with me and stay near me, then let them." I rubbed my nose and sniffled, not knowing why my heart was breaking or yearning for him to be near me. "Unlike you, they aren't being dicks."
The young Alpha bared his teeth and narrowed his eyes while he turned to look at us. He didn't say a word that I could hear, but both wolves did and bit back a small snort before they nodded.
I raised an eyebrow in question and pressed my lips into a thin line while I looked at the two of them, and the two wolves in front of me shrugged because there was no way they could tell me what had been said to them.
The young Alpha sighed and started to walk over to us a second time. He stopped when he had reached my shoulder and nuzzled it, and I placed my hand on the side of his face. He whined in apology and somehow was able to tell me that he was nervous, especially since I was human.
I scoffed a laugh and rolled my eyes, pursing my lips in annoyance. "I have no idea what you mean by the fact that I am human, but that doesn't mean you can come and leave and then come again. What's next? Are you going to leave again?"
The young Alpha jerked his head back when I said that before he reached out and gently grabbed my shirt with his teeth. He turned me toward him, let go of my shirt, and cocked his head to the side while he studied me, and I had this feeling that he was asking me if I could understand him.
I pressed my lips into a thin line and shrugged, biting back a small grimace. "I have no idea how much I am able to understand you or not," I admitted. "All I know is that you are nervous about this, whatever the fuck this is." I bit back a tired sigh and moved a hand through my hair and across my face.
The young Alpha sighed and nodded. He pressed his ears to the side of his head and slowly blinked, and a look of guilt and sadness flashed through his eyes.
"Are you going to let them hang out with me?" I asked and raised an eyebrow in question. "I know that you don't like it, even though I have no idea why, but I want to be friends with them and hang out with them." I shrugged and stuffed my hands into my pockets. "I don't have any friends and will probably not have any friends at school, so they're going to have to do, for now."
Declan growled behind me and narrowed his eyes, and the young Alpha looked at him before he looked at me, unamused.
I bit back a tired sigh and bit the inside of my lip when my mind turned to both Patrick and Declan but as humans. "There might be one, maybe two, people that might want to be friends with me," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "But I don't know if they will want to hang out with me at school or if hanging out with me is just going to be a community type of thing."
The young Alpha sighed and nodded toward the two of them, and I looked that way to see that Declan was looking annoyed and hurt and Patrick looking amused.
Declan hesitated and took a step closer to me, his blue eyes searching my face for something, anything, that might tell him what I was feeling.
I didn't say a word and stared at him, making sure that my face was blank. I watched as he continued to walk over to me, ignoring the young Alpha growing tense behind me.
And thankfully, he didn't seem to react as if he knew that Declan wouldn't hurt me...
Declan paused in front of me and nuzzled my face before he pressed his forehead up against mine, something we had done as kids when we were near each other but couldn't give each other a hug.
Silently, he told me that he wanted to be friends with me and still considered me his sister, even after so many years apart.
I closed my eyes and placed my hand on his cheek, and my throat closed. I took a deep, shuddering breath and released it with a small whoosh before I slowly nodded. "Ok," I said, my voice barely above a whisper and shaking while a wave of emotions washed over me.
I licked my lips and cleared my throat, blinking back some tears that wanted to fall. "Just don't do anything stupid or get into trouble, ok? I don't need any incident where I have an "I told you so" moment to tell you."
Declan scoffed a laugh and rolled his eyes. He pulled his head away from me and opened his eyes, and I opened my eyes all of the way to look at him.
Amusement flashed through his eyes while he stared at me, and I bit back a small snort and rolled my eyes because I knew that he didn't care if he would have an "I told you so" moment unlike me because I hated it so much.
Patrick whined and walked over to us. He looked at the young Alpha before he looked at us, and a look of sadness flashed through his eyes.
Declan bit back a small whine and pulled further away from me. Pain and sadness filled his eyes, and I could tell that he didn't like the idea of letting me leave when all he wanted to do was hang out with me, which was something I wanted to do, too.
"Do I have to go back to the place where I am staying at, for now?" I asked and raised an eyebrow in question, not comfortable talking about that place being my new home when I was still a guest.
Patrick whined before he slowly nodded in confirmation.
I bit back a tired sigh and rubbed the bridge of my nose, pursing my lips in annoyance. "Do I have to go alone?"
Again, he nodded, even though there was a look of annoyance on his face because he didn't want me to go alone, especially since I was in a new place and could get hurt or worse.
I slowly nodded and bit the inside of my lip. I looked at the young Alpha behind me before I looked at the two wolves, who I was supposed to consider my brothers in one way or another. "Do you think I will be allowed to have visitors?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
Can they come in their human forms..?
Declan howled happily and nodded. He turned in the other direction away from the path I needed to take to get back to the house and bolted away from us, and I couldn't help but roll my eyes and scowl before I turned to look at Patrick.
"I'll see you later," I said to Patrick, and Patrick nodded and wagged his tail before he started to make his way in a different direction than Declan, bounding into the trees and the thick brush.
I bit back a tired sigh and shook my head before I turned to look at the young Alpha to see that he was staring at me with something in his eyes that I didn't know and didn't like. "Can I see you?" I asked and raised an eyebrow in question while I studied him, pressing my lips into a thin line. "Or are you just going to not let me understand this feeling between us at all?"
He sighed and pressed his forehead against mine like Declan had once done, and he closed his eyes.
I closed my eyes and placed my hand on his cheek before I let it fall to my side when he pulled away from me, and I opened my eyes, feeling a little dejected and alone.
Silently, he told me that he would see me around before he left, leaving me to watch after him with my heart being taken away but mending a little because I had a feeling he would hold that promise.
I will see you soon...
