CHAPTER EIGHT
Normalcy
⠀⠀⠀⠀
I groaned at the sight of the sun shining through the window. I threw my blanket further over my head, ignoring Scott's yammering.
"Jess, get up." He began smacking my whole body from the other side of the blanket. I growled in response like the werewolf I am.
"Why? It isn't even a school day." I groaned, turning on the spot to wrap myself further into the blanket.
"Do you want a ride to Liam's or not?"
"Yes!" I practically jumped out of the bed sheets and threw my arms up in the air, accidentally smacking Scott across the face. I laughed it off, ignoring his complaining and pushed myself up off of my bed and ran into the bathroom, doing my best not to pass out over how tired I still felt. Strange how I was able to find some way of getting up.
I rested my hands against the counter top and stared into the mirror. My hair was all kinds of messy. I had no makeup on, and again I reminded myself of a zombie. However, makeup was less of a concern to me compared to my hair.
I furiously dug around in the drawers underneath the sink in search of a hairbrush. Oh I pray that my hair doesn't permanently stay like this.
"Why are you so worried about how you look?" Scott's voice startled me from my bent over position on the floor.
I stood up once more and stared at him in the mirror while I brushed through my hair violently. Thank god I was able to find a comb. "It's a girl thing, Scott. You wouldn't understand."
Scott rolled his eyes but kept a giant grin planted on his face. "I've been around girls enough to know things. And you of all of them are the one I know the most."
I threw the comb into the sink before rushing out of the bathroom. I pushed past my brother, ignoring his stupid smirk. "Well, then don't ask questions you think you know the answer to."
Opening my closet, I began shuffling through clothes that I had worn countless times. I could have easily pulled off any style, but nothing I looked or seemed satisfying. I was definitely feeling nervous of what to wear in front of Liam even though I shouldn't have gave a damn at all. He's seen me drenched in water with blood over me, I don't think it can get any worse.
I feel like it can though.
Finally, I decided to give up on the whole 'impress Liam' thing, and I thought that I'd just wear what I wanted. After all, a girl who's confident in her clothes is the kind of girl to be feared. I reminded myself that his parents were going to be there too, and I didn't know whether to scream or cry. All of it was pretty absurd. Just a week ago I had wished that i'd be able to go to his house, and now I am. Things can happen in only a matter of days.
"Do you mind?" I questioned Scott with an unamused tone. I swung my chosen dress around in the air as a symbol for him to give me the privacy I so clearly need. I'll probably regret choosing a dress, but honestly I need to get out of the whole 'denim shorts genre' for once.
"Why couldn't Mom just drive you. You're taking forever." Scott groaned as he stepped away from the door. I followed him until he was standing in the hallway, looking at me with what I could only assume bored would look like.
"You have ten minutes before I leave your ass. I don't want to be late for the PSAT'S, and I'm sure you don't want to be late for your... date." He laughed with another smirk.
I shoved him further away from the door and slammed it shut before he could make a joke out of it. Oh, how I can hate my brother.
Nine minutes later, I was dressed and had done my hair using one of the many hairstyles Lydia showed me. I took one final look at myself in the vanity mirror my dad had bought me, and ran downstairs without another thought.
Once I reached the bottom of the stairs, I could hear Scott's dirt bike starting up from outside. No, no don't you dare. I raced towards the door and pulled it open to see Scott driving off without me.
"Hey, stop!" I yelled, slamming the door shut to chase after him. Luckily, I don't have a total jerk of a brother. He stopped driving and sat on his bike in the middle of the road, looking at me with a grin.
I rolled my eyes, jumping on the bike behind him. "Don't do that."
The two of us laughed, but I felt like I needed to get some sort of revenge on him. Hopefully that will happen sooner than later. He slid his helmet on to his head before taking off down the road. I held on tightly, the wind wiping through my hair I spent most of my time on. So much for that.
The drive to Liam's was boring. I had apologised to Stiles in a car, so I planned to the same with Scott. Problem is, you can't exactly talk very well when your driving with a face full of wind. Like I've told myself many times before, I'll have to apologise to him some other time. What I'll apologise for, I don't know. Probably everything ever.
"Walk me to the door, please walk me to the door!" I begged Scott as the two of us sat on his bike outside of Liam's.
"Why? Is my little sister nervous?" He asked, making some joke out of it.
I nodded in response, looking over at the house that looked terribly fancy. What if his mom is some high class business women that works for the government. Oh god, what if she ends up hating me. What if I embarrass myself in front of them and Liam never wants to see me again? Coming here was a terrible idea.
"Take me home, oh god take me home." I mumbled, tugging on Scott's shirt. I looked at him to see a smile on his face. He shook his head, pulling my hand away from him.
"I can't do that. You don't want Liam thinking you're scared, do you?" Pointing his finger toward the house, I followed it and my heart swelled up. Liam was standing there, directly in front of the door.
"I am so screwed." I whispered before slowly stepping off of Scott's bike completely. I waved at Liam somewhat awkwardly, and became rewarded with a wave from him. Okay, you can do this. You're just hanging out with him... at his house... with him.
Shit.
I turned around and tried jumping back onto Scott's bike because of how absolutely nervous I was. I don't want to be here, I don't, I don't.
Scott easily pushed me away. Groaning at my sudden change in mind. "Go to him, idiot."
I stood back on the pathway, and sighed in defeat. Liam had stepped forward more and I could easily see the confusion in his face. Well, now I feel embarrassed more than anything.
Scott threw his helmet back on, and revved up the tiny engine inside his tiny motorbike. "I'll pick you up. Just call me when you want me to come and get you."
Call him? Oh great.
"Wait! I forgot my phone at-" I cut myself off once I realised he couldn't hear me. Of course, he didn't stop. I watched him drive along the road until he disappeared around a corner completely. "home."
"You okay?" Liam's voice sounded from behind me. A hand slipped into mine, letting me know that he was now directly beside me. I swivelled around to look at the boy I was absolutely freaking out about.
"Yeah, yeah sorry I- I'm just..."
"Nervous?" He finished my sentence for me. His hand squeezed mine tighter, and he began pulling me away towards his home. "No big deal."
✡
Liam had whisked me away to his room in a heartbeat. He seemed so eager to get me there that I felt confused as to why, considering neither of his parents were home in the first place. That part I was somewhat thankful for. It gives me time to... prepare my introduction.
Liam and I were sitting on his bed, not doing much of anything apart from talking. He told me his parents weren't home because his step dad had work and his mom was out visiting family for the day. They'll both be home later tonight, which is making me feel nervous again since Liam wants me to hang around for dinner. In all honesty, I'm making a bigger deal out of it than it really needs to be. It will definitely be awkward, but I think I'll manage.
An hour after my arrival, I found myself thinking about how stupid I was by leaving my phone at home.
"Hey." I cut Liam off from his boring small talk about lacrosse. Sure, I was paying attention to him, but it definitely wasn't because he was talking about lacrosse. It was because his damn lips were moving and I just... oh hell I needed to kiss him again.
"Yeah?" He asked, almost seeming offended by my interruption.
I twirled my hair around with one of my hands, and used the other to fix the hem of my dress that constantly moved up until my thigh was fully showing. I was right, I definitely am feeling regretful about wearing a dress. "I left my phone at home and I kinda needed it to call Scott so he can pick me up later. Uh, so can I just use yours?"
"Yeah, yeah just say when and it's yours. Well not yours but you can have it. I mean not have it as in keep it but have it so you can call uh, call your brother and... you know what I'm just gonna shut up." He rubbed the back of his neck and scrunched up his face which I found adorable.
"Nervous, huh?" I joked, referring to when he had said it to me once I got here.
"Shut up!" He defended, pushing me over so that I was sprawled out on his bed.
Oh god, Jess. Close your legs before he sees anything.
"Jerk!" I laughed, sitting up and pushing him over like he had done to me. Instead of falling onto the bed, he fell straight onto the floor and hit it with a loud thud.
I winced, hearing him groan from the impact. "Oh, Liam... that's not how you're suppose to sleep." I joked, grinning at his red face.
"I hate you so much." He muttered before sitting in an upright position. "You think you're so funny but your jokes are lame."
"That's not a very nice thing to say." I pouted like a puppy and saw his face light up with satisfaction.
"Don't temp me, McCall." He stood up slowly and bent his back as if falling was the most painful thing to happen to him in a while.
"Tempt you to do what?" I asked jokingly, still chuckling at how I managed to push him off of the bed.
I saw the sly grin that appeared on his face, followed by the familiar glow of golden eyes.
Then he attacked me.
Well, he didn't actually attack me. He just sorta fell on top of me and began violently tickling me all along my body like he had earlier this week. My whole body seemed to break at each little touch. Ever since I was little, tickling was my vulnerability, but it became ten times worse now that Liam is the one causing it.
"No, no, no, stop!" I begged between laughs. There's no way to explain what it feels like. It happens so quickly and your mind becomes so confused, so it seems like the air is being sucked out of you for no reason at all. Your body aches but it's the kind you can't help but feel good about. As much as I hate it, I always seem to be sadder once it's over.
"No chance." Liam breathed which made my heart pound. The way he said it just sounded so different and damn attractive. No, don't think of him like this when he's making you weak... he's just... oh my god who am I kidding, I want him.
"Liam-" He fell further to my side, and pulled me in closer to continue attacking me. One of his hands ran along my body from my stomach to my neck, while the other hand held my legs down so that I couldn't kick him. Eh, whatever. At least he's touching me. "I swear to god if you don't stop I will werewolf out on you."
Everything suddenly stopped as Liam pulled away. "Woah, woah there's no need for that." He threw his hands up and raised his eyebrows like it was a joke to him.
I sat up beside him, quickly looking down at my dress to check if I wasn't flashing. Luckily I'm not, so I turned back to Liam and glared at him with squinted eyes. "Funny."
He cocked his head and furrowed his eyebrows. "You asked for it." He laughed before pushing me down onto my back. Again, he started tickling me. Each and every one seemed worse than the previous one, yet my body felt relaxed.
Instead of fighting him away with words, I wanted to actually try and shift like I said I would. The only downside was that I had no control over it, and I didn't know whether or not I would change. The only thing that alerted me of my shift was the headache, and that was no where to be found. I concentrated solemnly on one thing, and one thing only.
Liam.
I closed my eyes, still laughing away at Liam's sick joke of fun. Why I chose this doofus to think about was something even I didn't know. All I do know is that Liam causes me to werewolf out. I first noticed it on the bus when Mason and the two murders were talking about Lindy. I felt jealous, and from there I ended up turning. The second time it happened was at Lydia's lake house during the full moon. Liam had rushed out into the forest, and for some reason I followed. The final time could have possibly been when he kissed me, but the wolfsbane was stopping any chance of that happening.
I had to choose any one of those things to focus on, and yet nothing came to mind. I didn't feel any different, so I gave up trying and decided to just let him have his way. Maybe if I just never give up he'll finally become tired.
I opened my eyes again to see him in the same position, doing the same thing. I quickly shoved him off of me, surprisingly making him pull away.
He sat back with a grin and reached a hand out for me to take it. I rolled my eyes, but accepted it anyway.
"So you can control it." He said, the two of us now sitting directly in front of each other with crossed legs.
"What?" I asked, taken aback by his sudden change of conversation. Had I accidentally said something?
His hands fumbled around in the pockets of his jumper before he finally pulled out a phone. He handed it to me, and I had no idea what to do with it until he brought it up towards my face. In the reflection, my eyes glowed their werewolf yellow.
"I did it!" I yelled with excitement, throwing both of my arms up into the air.
"Oh, so you were trying to change on purpose. Plan on killing me now, do you?" Liam chuckled, slipping his phone back into the pocket it came from.
I shook my head in the air proudly, and slapped my hands down onto the bed. Oh, it felt good to have control over something to be afraid of. I fell onto the bed and spread my arms out like all I wanted to do was sleep on it for the rest of my life. I was strangely tired, and felt oddly powerful.
"Okay, well I think you have a problem..." He nodded, tapping a hand against his mouth.
"Are you calling me retarded?" I questioned, shooting him a sideways glance. He shook his head and threw himself beside me, the two of us staring directly into each other's eyes.
"Yes, but no. You figured out how to shift, but do you know how to... well... de-shift?"
"Oh... uh." I began blinking repeatedly, hoping that my eyes would change back. Even though I couldn't see it, I knew what Liam meant. My golden eyes weren't leaving, and I had no way of knowing how to make them go away.
"Dude, stop blinking. You look like an idiot, it's not helping."
I scoffed slightly before turning my head so I had a face full of bed. "Shut up."
I heard him laugh and felt a hand grab mine. Each of our fingers curled together and he pulled me up off of the bed until I was sitting on the edge of it. He stood in front of me, letting go of my hand before disappearing out into the hallway. Oh how cute it was.
I sat in silence looking around at his somewhat spacious room. He had several lacrosse sticks lying around, and a lot of pictures that sat on top of a desk and a few shelves. On the back of a chair was a green lacrosse shirt, very similar to the Devenford one from the scrimmage. The only difference was that the thing had practically been ripped in all places. I guess that happened out of anger after Liam was expelled from school. I wouldn't mind ripping up a uniform either, knowing that a dick like Brett would be wearing the same kind. In all honesty, I couldn't help but think what Liam would look like in green uniform compared to maroon. Either way, he probably looked damn fine.
The whole room reminded me of Stiles' bedroom because of how dark and messy it was. His room was definitely lived in, and it seemed as though he spent a lot of time in here much like I do in mine. I've had a lot of reason to do so lately, however. I do my best to avoid my dad, so I keep myself locked away in my room.
"Wow, I can't believe you actually stayed." Liam said from the doorway. In his arms he held at least twenty DVDs that were piled on top of each other. Oh my god, finally something I'm good at. Sitting around doing nothing all day, that's the life for me.
"What do you mean?" I asked as he threw the movies all over the ground.
"I don't know. It's just that Mason and I would have movie nights with Garrett and Violet. They'd always skip out by the time Mason and I came back in the room. I guess now I know that it's because they were off murdering supernaturals."
I couldn't help but laugh, and slid down the bed to sit beside him on the floor. "It sucks, doesn't it?"
Liam nodded his head with a smile of his own, and he began spreading out the infinite supply of movies.
I stared at them all, and felt a hell of a lot sad when I realised Guardians of The Galaxy couldn't possibly be one of them. And let me tell you, it was even worse to know that The Maze Runner wouldn't be here either, considering it's not out in the movies yet. Then again, half of me didn't feel all to committed about seeing it, since the lead actor who plays Thomas looks an awful lot like Stiles. Now that's something I'll never understand.
"Ugh, now this sucks." I groaned, grabbing the movie Sharknado. I held it up to Liam and he just laughed his incredible laugh.
"Are you kidding? Mason and I thought that was the best movie ever! Let me tell you, those sharks are more real than half the girls at school."
The laugh that sounded from my lungs was one I do not want to talk about. I actually snorted, and I could literally feel my face turning red. Okay, okay. That joke was pretty funny.
Liam and I laughed for a long time, not bothering to actually watch a movie yet. Instead we sat on the floor for a good hour talking about the worst movies. Out of boredom, we ended up sorting through the twenty six movies he brought in the room, and we ordered them from highest to lowest. Finally, we came to the conclusion that Dracula was the worst, only because we hated the whole idea of vampires. I mean, if werewolves exist, how long will it be before vampires show up at Beacon? No offence, but i'd rather deal with twenty kanima's over three Dracula's and one Edward Cullen.
A huge problem happened once we had to decide which movie was number one. It was a downright war between me and him. He was willing to risk his life in saying The Avengers deserved the imaginary award, whilst I was most likely set on The Fault in Our Stars. And although I hate to admit it, he won the battle. Well, that's what he thinks. In my mind, The Fault in Our Stars is the absolute winner, followed closely by Divergent. What can I say, I'm overly into movies based upon books. I wonder what it would be like if my life was to be made into a movie or a TV show... maybe even a book.
Two hours later, the clock on Liam's phone changed to 1:07. Scott and the others would be finished their PSAT's by now. I was happy to be with Liam, but I also wished I had decided to do mine with them like Lydia did in her freshman year. I hadn't noticed it until now, but I've been separating from my older group of friends since Liam came into the picture. Then again, it's only been a few weeks, so I guess some time with people my own age should be good. Especially if it's Liam. I mean sure, Mason's my friend too, but I wouldn't love to spend every minute of every day with him. I mean... not that I would with Liam either. Yeah, no... no way... uh.
The movie Liam and I decided to watch was something extraordinary. By extraordinary I mean boring. Thanks to his brilliant idea, Liam blindfolded me with his hands, shuffled around the movies and told me to pick one. Let me tell you, I have no luck when it comes to that. I don't even remember what the movie is called, but I know that I could fall asleep just watching it.
Liam and I were slouching around on the couch in the living room. Liam sat with his arm slung on the back of the couch while my upper body was lying on top of his lap. Our hands were touching ever so slightly, but I didn't want to make it seem even the slightest amount of awkward. Each day that had passed since we were stuck in the well, the less we've been holding each other, I guess.
Liam seemed to be waiting around until someone got home, and I don't even know what I was doing. Half paying attention to the movie and half listening to my thoughts. My thoughts told me to just grab Liam's face and kiss him, but they also told me 'slut'. The word hung around even though there was no way I could possibly be compared to that, so I did my best to push it away into the back of my mind like I do with all of my feelings.
"You know what's funny?" Liam said monotonously.
I shifted in his lap, feeling the hard bone of his arm under my neck. "What?"
I expected him to say 'your face' and finely enough, I was right about that.
"Your face."
I scoffed and stared away from the movie to glare at him. "I knew you were going to say that, jerk."
Liam smiled and unexpectedly ran a hand through my hair which sent all kinds of feelings through me. "I didn't mean it like that. I mean it's funny how your eyes are still... werewolf."
I blinked repeatedly again, grabbing at my face as if it were possible to rip them out. "Seriously?" I groaned, sitting up from Liam's lap. I slid my hand into Liam's jumper and grabbed out his cellphone. Bringing it up toward my face one more time, I was greeted with the yellow eyes. The colour seemed to float around as if it were really water. The natural green of my eyes were showing through, but it only created the illusion as if my eyes were a golden green.
"Jess, can I ask you something?"
I snapped my head towards Liam and handed him the phone, grinning at him as much as possible without seeming creepy. I leaned against the couch and threw my legs over his for balance. "Sure, what's up?"
Liam smiled back before turning away to watch the boring movie once more. "Your eyes... they're different."
I knew exactly what he meant. God, it was one of the first things people would ask after they found out I'm a McCall. I was use to it, so the answer I was giving Liam was one I used a lot.
"I know, mine are green and Scott's are brown. My mom and dads eyes are brown too, yes. And honestly, no I don't know why mine are green." I sighed, also drawing my attention to the TV.
"That's not what I meant."
I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion, gazing at him again to see him already staring at me. "How is that not what you meant?"
He licked his lips with a grin, one of which I couldn't help but melt from. "I mean, yours are gold and mine are yellow. How have you not noticed that?"
"Yet again, I don't know what you're talking about."
"What I'm saying is your eyes are... I don't know... more defined. Mine glow but yours kind of just- well they, I don't know okay it's hard to explain."
I suppressed a laugh by putting my lips in a flat line. This kid is adorable.
Suddenly it was like my ears had perked up. Of course they didn't literally do it, but they seemed to pick up on a sound from outside. I'm guessing Liam heard it too, because soon enough the two of us were standing on our feet, gazing out the window for a sign of anything.
There in the driveway was a light coloured car. A woman stepped out, fumbling around in her purse for something.
"Oh, oh god." Liam raised his voice. He ran both of his hands through his hair and began pacing back and forth on the spot.
"What, is that your mom?" I asked, still looking out the window to see the woman drop a bottle full of pills on the ground. They spilled all around the concrete, some even rolling under her car. Wow, that must suck. "Oh, maybe I should help her."
I stepped out in front of Liam before being pulled back into my spot. "Hey what is your problem?" I asked, staring at Liam with a scowl.
His eyes seemed to widen and his lip quivered. He took a step back from me and spazzed his hands out in front of me. It reminded me of what Stiles had done during the night Peter trapped us in the school. The only difference was that Stiles was addressing to a twenty foot wall of windows, and Liam was aiming the subject at me.
"What?" I asked, totally oblivious to what he was trying to signal.
"Oh for gods sake- your eyes!"
At the mention of them, they widened and I felt the panic rush in. I slapped a hand on my mouth, letting out a sound that sound like an 'oh' because of how dumb I was.
"Not good, she's going to see them and-"
Click, click.
The sound of the front door unlocking sent Liam and I into a frenzy of emotions. Liam stepped out in front of me, shielding me from the view of his mom who just so happened to walk into the house at that very moment.
"Control it." Liam whispered through gritted teeth. I nodded from behind him, closing my eyes as I held onto the back of his shirt.
Many thoughts flew into mind, and I started sorting through them until I found something. I remembered how I on the bus, I stopped the shift by using my 'inspirational' sentence. I decided that was my best shot, but much like I had done with Scott, Stiles and Liam, I knew the only way possible was to say it out loud.
I did my best to whisper, letting go of Liam before starting. "Pain is only instinct... and instinct is what makes us human."
"Hey sweetie, how was your day?" The somber voice of Liam's mom sounded just a few feet away from in front of Liam and I.
Opening my eyes, my stomach seemed to drop at the sight. Werewolf claws were sticking out from my fingers, and I was oh so glad I decided to let go of Liam when I did.
This isn't helping.
Again.
"Pain is only instinct... and instinct is what makes us human."
Nothing.
"Jess, come on." Liam's voice rang in my ears. He was probably using the whole whisper thing the two of us figured out in Biology.
"I-I can't. I don't have an anchor. I need an anchor." I whispered back, feeling flustered about how stressed this was making me.
"Then find one."
Find one, find one. Anger, love, fear? There's nothing. Nothing's here! I can't do it, I'm going to give myself away. A werewolf without an anchor, great idea. I'm useless.
"Why is your friend hiding behind you?" The woman's voice got louder, and I couldn't help but shuffle closer into Liam.
"Mom, don't. She's just-"
"Hey, don't worry, you don't need to be nervous. I won't bite."
You won't bite, but maybe I will. At the corner of my eye, I could see the woman was only a step away from seeing my face. Suddenly, Liam whipped me around, grabbing both of my hands in his. I squeezed my eyes shut as if that were the only thing to help me.
Unexpectedly, the stress drained from me. I could feel the claws disappearing, and more importantly, my eyes seemed to clear out as if I had been crying and the tears escaped. I was definitely not crying, and definitely less afraid. It was strange, but in one go I opened my eyes. The room seemed to light up with a new era.
Liam gasped from beside me, but seemed to relax afterward. He held on tighter to my hands which made them feel completely numb.
I shook my head and smiled widely at Liam's mom standing in front of me. She was beautiful to say the least, but more importantly, she didn't seem to jump back at the site of glowing yellow eyes. Or should I say golden eyes.
"Hi, I'm Jess. Nice to meet you." I greeted, sliding one of my hands away from Liam's to extend it out towards her.
"Nice to meet you too." She replied with a smile. She seemed to gaze down at Liam's hand in mine, before taking one of her own with a hand shake.
"Mom, your cars unlocked." Liam said, sounding a little harsh. I looked at him, shuffling in the spot to see a cold and serious expression on his face.
Liam's mom nodded her head before giving me another smile. She left without another word, and I couldn't help but feel guilty over what just happened. Once she exited the house, Liam began dragging me away to his room.
"Hey, what about the movie!" I joked, not bothering to laugh about it.
He pulled me in and shut the door behind me, inspecting me like I was some kind of alien. I bobbed my head and shrugged my shoulders. "What?"
"You controlled it." He said, his face lighting up with a smile I never expected to see. "How?"
I stopped swinging back and forth so I could focus on what to say. "You told me to find an anchor."
He stepped closer, closing the space between us completely. "Yeah but, what the hell made you do that? One second you were all worked up, and the next you were shaking hands with my mom acting like nothing happened."
"Like I said, I found an anchor." I stated, finding my way towards his hands. I grabbed them both and held them up to my chest. I knew what happened, but now I felt like Liam needed to be connected to me in some way, constantly.
"What was it?" He asked, bringing his face closer to mine.
"Not what... someone."
The confusion on his face seemed to fade, but he still looked like he was struggling to put the pieces together. "Again, I have no idea what you're talking about."
I couldn't help but laugh, knowing that I had just said that ten minutes ago. I breathed in the smell of him, the boyish kind I can't resist swooning over. "I don't know what happened, but... everything seemed to stop when you grabbed my hands. I-I don't know why."
"I'm... i'm your anchor?" He asked with new found fascination.
"No... no I just- no!" I pulled my hands back, turning away from him. Oh god, there's no way this is happening. I slapped both of my hands over my face in embarrassment, feeling Liam's body against my back once more.
"Who then? Scott, Stiles? Oh god, you're not dating Stiles are you?"
"No!" I turned on the spot, taken aback by his question. My eyes were level with his nose, even though I could've sworn I was the same height as him. Our bodies pressed together only making me feel breathless. "No there's no way I'd be dating Stiles. Gross."
Liam's eyebrows seemed to stitch together at my words. He definitely seemed confused about my explanation. "You piss me off."
My stomach dropped and I didn't know whether or not to take it seriously. I blinked my eyes lazily and hung my head towards the ground. "I'm sorry."
Liam sighed, his hand resting on my head as he began pulling me into a hug. "Woah, woah there's no reason for you to be sorry."
"It's you..."
"What?" His voice raised as he pulled away from me. Our eyes finally met, and I hoped he couldn't tell exactly how I felt.
"You, dumbass. You're my anchor." I groaned, poking Liam's chest with my finger.
His face lit up with a smile but I chose to ignore it so I could mope some more.
"And you didn't just tell me, why? Wow, you're such a drama queen." He laughed, poking me back. I sighed, not finding the truth of him being my anchor very good at all. In fact, I believed it was bad.
"Liam, it's not a good thing!" I held back a laugh and did my best at acting serious. His irresistible smile wasn't helping the situation. "It's not that simple."
"Oh come on, Jess. That's what every girl says. I'm your anchor, I stop you from shifting, big deal."
I stepped away from him and threw myself onto his bed. I felt to tired to stand, and I didn't feel good about myself at all. I threw a hand over my face again, sighing as Liam slowly began lying down beside me.
I thought my next words carefully in my mind before saying them. I just hoped that what I was saying was the truth. Even I wasn't sure about my own feelings. What a messed up thing your heart can be.
"I don't want you to be my anchor."
Liam rolled over until he was completely pressed up against me. I too moved so that we mirrored each other's position. "Why not? I thought you... never mind."
His eyes darted away from mine, and suddenly I regretted what I had said. Great, nice thinking there, Jess. I ignored his last comment and decided to come back to that later. Right now I owe him an explanation as to why I was so harsh on him. All I'm going to be from now on is truthful.
I closed my eyes, bringing my head closer towards him until our noses were touching. "Scott had an anchor... a someone. Her name was Allison, and she helped him to control. She was his weakness and his strength, but most of all she was his hope. I thought that was it. I thought they'd be together because they truly loved each other. But..." I breathed in an absurd amount of air after my lungs began tightening. I could feel Liam's hand gripping onto mine, so I was thankful for that. "...but recently he lost her. All of us did, but it had a bigger impact on him. For the longest time he felt empty. He felt like he failed to protect her, and that's what I'm afraid of, Liam. I'm afraid that something will happen to you, and I'll be left with this void. I don't want you to be my anchor, because I don't want to lose you. Liam, you're-"
"You think I don't feel the same way about you?" Liam interrupted. His blue eyes were locked with mine, and I could feel them burn a permanent memory into my mind.
"No? Of course I don't, but I care whether or not anything happens to you. There's a chance that I'll lose you."
Liam licked his lips, letting out a sound that sounded like a mixture of a laugh and a sigh. I should of kissed him when I had the chance, because it's looking like we won't be doing anything for a while after this... argument.
"Whether you like it or not, our names are on the dead pool, and something is definitely going to happen to us. I don't want to sit around waiting for the possibility, so instead I'm going to do my best to make sure you don't get hurt. I'm not doing this by chance, Jess. I'm doing this by instinct."
I rolled my eyes, never breaking away from his body. "Whatever."
"Okay, okay whatever then." Liam pulled his hand away from mine and slapped it onto the bed to push himself up. He didn't stop moving until he opened his bedroom door, looking ready to escape through it.
"Liam!" I called, rolling myself off of the bed. Once my feet landed on the ground, I ran for him before he had the chance to leave. I pulled his hand away from the door and slammed it shut. "You are not leaving."
"No, you're right. This is my house, so you should be the one to leave."
That was it. That was the moment when I knew I definitely screwed up. My body seemed to fall apart, and I stupidly held in the tears that were making me feel worse.
"Fine." I mumbled. Hearing the sadness in my voice, I knew it sounded like I was going to cry. My hand was already on the door knob, and I was ready to burst out into the hallway. So much for calling Scott. I guess I'll just have to run home.
Before I had the chance to turn the knob, Liam distracted me by strangely running towards his desk. He grabbed something off of it and ran back over to me. My eyes widened as I realised what he was doing, and I frantically started turning the knob. I had a poor grip on it, so Liam had swooped in and pulled my hand away with ease before I had any chance of escaping.
Click, click.
The object Liam had picked up off of his desk was now stuck in the lock before Liam pulled it out again. Oh great, of course he had a goddamn key.
"What are you doing!" I yelled as he held the key up in front of his face. His expression was serious, but he seemed a little jumpy over what he did.
"Locking you in." A smile appeared on his face which caused anger to flow through me.
"Give me that!" I said, reaching out towards the golden key he held. He pulled it away easily, and I knew he wasn't going to give up so easily.
"No chance." He grinned. Again, he said it like he had when he was tickling me. I was to angry to find it attractive, but I found it cute none the less.
So I jumped him. I threw myself onto him, sending the two of us onto the ground. He groaned in pain but I was focused on slashing my arms out to grab the key from him.
"Give it!" The two of us rolled around on the ground, both of us fighting for dominance. I hate feeling like the weakest link, so I elbowed him in the stomach which made him cough on low oxygen. The key was still in his hands and it was a clear shot for glory. I reached for it again but sadly, Liam's hand was covering my face as he pushed my head sideways into the floor. I lost my line of vision, making it impossible to tell where the key was.
"Damn it, Dunbar!" I groaned as I clawed at whatever clothing I could find. Unfortunately, I wasn't in werewolf form, so nothing was becoming damaged like I had hoped.
His hand had been released from my head, and I quickly shuffled into a sitting position. Liam was sitting beside me, half of his body hovering over me. A smirk was plastered onto his face, and I could no longer see the golden key in his hands.
"Where is it?" I mumbled, giving the best scowl I could.
"No where."
I raised an eyebrow and grinned. You want to play dirty? Well so can I.
I attacked him once more, pushing him onto his backside. I hovered over him and began frantically searching for the key. I practically manhandled him by running my hands all over his body in hopes if finding the damn key. I softly slapped all along his thigh, to his stomach and his chest, stopping once my eyes met his. He just lay there, smiling like an idiot. He wasn't fighting back and wasn't putting much effort into stopping me from getting it. I tilted my head and furrowed my eyebrows as if to question why he was like this.
His eyes darted downward and I followed. Oh for fucks sake.
"Seriously?" I asked with a tone that could only be described as 'you're an asshole'. "You put the damn thing down your pants, didn't you?" I made squinty eyes at him, while he just grinned at me. I let out a giggle before letting my arms buckle so I could fall onto his chest. "Of course you did."
"Of course I did." He repeated, beginning to stroke my hair with one of his hands. I had the urge to swat it away, but I let it happen, otherwise who knows how long we'll be arguing for.
"Don't pretend like the conversation didn't just happen." I spoke like I was halfway between joking and serious.
"I know. You owe me an apology."
"What?" I laughed, bringing myself up from him. "I don't owe you anything."
His hand moved from my hair and he placed it on my waist. I didn't know whether to feel pissed off or happy, which made me... well... pissed off.
"Okay, okay, okay... I'm sorry then."
I smiled wide at him, feeling proud that I didn't have to put up a fight over this too. He began sitting up slowly, but I couldn't be bothered rolling off of him, so I just let him move me until he felt comfortable enough. I could feel his stomach rise and fall with each breath he took, along with the steady pace of his heartbeat. I hadn't anticipated the way I was feeling, and it was crazy to be mad one moment, and happy the next. I've always hated mood swings.
I wiggled closer to his face and stared at him with a smile. He seemed to be in deep thought, but looked at me with a smile of his own anyway. "Something's bothering you."
I expected him to stay quiet, but he nodded his head before letting out a tiny sigh. "I'm just thinking."
"About?" I asked with what I hoped looked like an amused face instead of a crazy one.
He shuffled on the spot, causing me to completely sit off of him. I would have minded, if it wasn't for him bringing my legs over his. It was as though he was trying to hold me bridal style, but we were on the ground so it probably looked a little cramped.
He shook his head, the smile on his face never leaving. "Nothing, you probably don't want to talk about it."
"Shut up, Liam. You can't tell what I want and don't want." I answered, punching him softly in the chest. The two of us giggled and I waited for a while before he was ready to speak.
"Did the kiss... did it mean anything to you?"
I was totally caught off guard.
Did the kiss mean anything to me? Of course it did. At the time, I mean. But now I have a confusing amount of emotions and it's hard to tell what I feel right now. I wanted to, I so desperately wanted to... but since it was like he dropped a bomb on me, I found it hard to respond. But I knew I had to anyway.
"I don't know. Maybe."
Liam froze in place, blinking a few times before biting down on his lip with a nod of his head. "Maybe? That sounds... like a no."
"No, no it's not a no! I just don't know how to feel about it because... it- I don't know." I threw my hands in the air to explain like Stiles always does. Liam just sat there expressionless, staring at me like I was the most interesting thing ever.
"I get it. Heat of the moment kiss, right?" He bit down on his lip again, looking like he was ready to just leave the room.
I let out a groan and scratched at the top of my head before scrunching up my face. What he said was definitely not true, but I had no energy to explain exactly what I thought. "Yeah, yeah I guess."
He hung his head low but grabbed my hand. I held it tighter, tilting his head up with my free hand. It seemed pretty weird since it was usually the boy pulling a move like this. "You know, instead of sulking, you could always just ask."
His blue eyes were brighter than previously, and I did my best to not practically throw myself at him. It was hard enough being on top of him.
"Ask you what?"
"To kiss me, idiot. I may not know how I feel about before, but if you kiss me now then-"
Liam was way ahead of me. His lips were on mine before I had the chance to finish, and I found myself already kissing back. The thing is, it wasn't as great as the first kiss. In fact, a lot of it was awkward. I could feel myself shaking, and we didn't seem to have any idea of what we were doing. I guess we were both nervous and freaked out having to do it in normal standards. By normal, I mean not surrounded by a well.
Both of us pulled away in time, awkwardly smiling at each other.
"Oh my god, uh... can I try again?" Liam asked, his cheeks were a bright red.
I laughed with a nod of my head. My cheeks were burning compared to his hands that slowly found their way to my face. He smiled before leaning in just as slow, the two of our lips connecting again. This time was different, like many romantic stories would say, our lips moved together like it was easy enough for the two of us. One of Liam's arms pulled me closer into his chest, and it wasn't long before the two of us ended up on the ground. His whole body hovered over mine and both of his hands ran along my legs before pulling them to his side. I smiled into the kiss, feeling strange about it all. The whole thing seemed foreign to me, but I knew that after this he'd be looking for an answer of how I feel. All I can say, is that I'm damn in love with the way he kisses.
He would pull away and brush his bottom lip against mine before coming back for more. I became annoyed with his teasing, so I slipped a hand under his shirt. My mind was telling me that we were young, but then again it's not like we're going to have sex. Making out however, was something I couldn't resist when it came to this boy. My hand found his torso, and fucking hell it was hard not rip the hoodie and shirt he wore off. The muscles he had seemed impossible for a fifteen year old to have. He placed chaste kisses on the side of my mouth, slowly leaving trails down my cheek until he found my neck. My heart pounded and I hoped he was to distracted to notice. I couldn't hear anything over it.
I bit down on my lip to hide any sound that was sure to come. I hadn't noticed that my free hand was running through his mousey brown hair until I practically clawed through it after he undeniably found my weak spot. My back arched upward, my mouth opening wide to take in the air I needed after feeling breathless. I immediately pushed myself back down, ignoring Liam as his hands began moving up my legs and slipped in under my dress.
This is bad. Very bad. But no matter what, I didn't want to stop.
Again, his lips seemed to find the perfect weak spot. This time I let out a moan, feeling Liam smile at his accomplishment. With one quick move, he placed his lips back onto mine. I guess we got the hang of things, because our tongues were already in each others mouths once they connected. This felt totally weird, but why the hell didn't I want to stop?
Suddenly, I didn't just care about kissing him. It was like my heart had finally exploded and all I wanted to do was tell him how much he really meant to me. How much this was killing me.
I continued to smooth my hand over his hair, taking in the moment before pulling away from him. He seemed to understand, so his hands pulled out from under my dress. I couldn't of wished more for them to just stay there.
"Liam." I grinned as the two of us stared at each other. "Do you want an answer?"
My skin tingled at the touch as his hand began creeping up my dress again. "I think the kiss was enough to tell me how you feel, yeah?"
Before I had the chance to come up with some snarky joke, he had pressed his whole body against mine again, our lips coming together. My arms were the first things to react, because the two of them swung around his neck.
Liam moved his head back slightly so that his lips were still touching mine, but not enough to count as a kiss. The two of us smiled uncontrollably, and I wanted to smile even more at what he had said before attacking my face again.
"The feeling's mutual."
